With all these PhD in financial economics you guys still don't understand what drives the currency. We can export more, fix our balance of payment etc nothing will change. Until we create a demand for our currency by demanding our trading partners to transact in our currency when purchasing our goods we've lost it. If you are purchasing a mercedes Benz from Germany you use (Euros) their currency yet when they're purchasing cocoa or any of our natural resources they still bring their own currency for these transactions. This has created imbalances within the Ghanaian economy and as a result caused perpetual devaluation of the cedis. Ask yourselves which of these trading partners have cedis as part of their foreign reserves?Yet our central bank keeps their currencies as part of our reserves which intend create stability and demand for their domestic currencies. When the Ukraine war began, the mother of all sanctions was placed on Russia including a seizure of the foreign reserves which sit in European and western capital. The goal was to drive the russian roubles to a permanent devaluation point yet with the little gas that they have, Russia authorise all purchases of Russian gas in Russia roubles which created a solid demand for Russia roubles whether they like it or not. It forced all European countries who depended on their gas to hold their currency as a reserve which created demand, stability and appreciation for the roubles.Until Ghana and the entire Africa start transacting in their own currencies when trading with its trading counterparties nothing will change. How can we allow them to bring their currencies when purchasing our products yet we still use their currencies when purchasing their products. This is the real cause of the depreciation of the cedis not all the nonsense you guys are talking about. You have given other countries a monopoly of the mode of transacting, which has created demand for their currency at the expense of the GH cedis. Trade should be a win-win transaction not a one sided affair. Until we level the playing field when it comes to trade we will continue to have a perpetual devaluation, imbalances and vulnerability in our economy. This USA dollar opium by Ghana and its African countries needs to stop. While the Asian countries are dedollarisation and becoming important players in the global economy, the African is still hanging on to colonial structures. 100years ago it was the British pound now the US dollar. We've lost it.
