      The furnace was reasonably efficient but the hot water unit was definitely not.
      The propane furnace doesn't come close to the diesel heater though. Those things are amazing and it was the best upgrade we made.

    I don’t know whether anyone else has said this but you really don’t need those fridge vents. They were put in when the camper had a gas fridge. With the compressor fridge you do not need to vent it unless it is exceptionally hot. You should consider blocking the holes with maybe polystyrene insulation that is a tight fit. It will stop the drafts and you can if necessary remove it for when it gets really hot ( like high thirties °c) you will really notice the warmth when you have the air vents blocked

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the great advice.
      We did have some dense air filter covers that would could remove but we noticed the fridge using more power and getting really hot last year in Kazakhstan during the summer so we removed them.
      There is a fan at the back of the fridge does this not need some sort of air supply?

    • @CrichieB
      @CrichieB Před 4 lety +2

      Leigh Dearle the fan is used to move air around the back of the fridge , it should have some ventilation but that can quite easily be inside the camper. Think of where some fridges are placed in homes they are buried in cabinets for example. When it gets super hot yes have the vents open, but for normal use, they just let the draft in! On the danfoss compressor you have on your fridge there will be a terminal that can be wired so the fan only comes on when the temp is past a certain point. As for it using more power when it was hot , yes it will obviously bit they are still super efficient compared to a gas fridge. Also if the fan was in the original fit out it’s possible it was for the absorption gas fridge. Honestly you don’t need all that venting

    13:18 I wonder if a small fairing on the forward side of the fridge grille would help a little. I've seen them on one or two trans-saharan trucks and on UNHCR medical Defenders for their vaccine/medcine fridges. - just two or three inches wide of very thin aluminium bent out to keep the worst of the dust away from the grille, a bit like a wind deflector.
    You could try taping something on (even cardboard) the next dusty road you are one to see if it helps or not. Maybe wipe the outer face of the grille first with a tiny amount of cooking or engine oil on a tissue - just enought to make dust stick so you can see if it's working not after half a mile or so.

    • @donewhiskey
      @donewhiskey Před 4 lety +3

      That is a really good idea. You mean a sort of air dam, mounted vertically, forward of the vents? That should help a lot.

    • @gordslater
      @gordslater Před 4 lety +2

      @@donewhiskey yeah something like the window wind deflectors that you can fit to car doors (not seen one of those for years though - showing my age)
      You see bigger ones on US truck bonnets above the front grille sometimes.
      I have a feeling that it won't help too much, but it's an easy test with a little smear of oil to see if there's any change in dust accumulation and it's only a bit of tape and a strip of cardboard to test it out before you commit to making a real one. It may not work at all in this case.
      If the trans-Saharan truckers use it for their cab fridge vents there must be a reason - life is hard offroad out there and nothing is done without good reason.
      I've also seen what looked like an inertial separator on the engine airr intake on a couple of huge trucks there too - for convoy travel in dusty sand.
      I watched driver's mate open the flap to drop the dust out of one at a fuel dump. Box was empty (no filter or oil bath) but I saw the baffle plates clearly and recognised it as the same basic design as an inertial separator off an aviation turbine engine.
      This separator was about 4 foot square and a foot thick, mounted just behind the cab opposite the exhaust stack.
      A length of ducting then went out to the "standard" saharan snorkel air intake at the top of the cab. About 2 bucketsfulls of fine brown dust was quickly raked out of the rear vehicle's separator, the bottom of the box regreased with old sticky oil/grease and off they went again over the horizon in convoy.
      Mother of invention etc.

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 Před 4 lety

      @@gordslater we will definitely look into that, thanks heaps for the idea.

    Is your heater one that uses propane? Have you tried the on-demand water heater? I'm in the process of putting my camper together and wanted to use your experience. Thanks.....

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 Před 4 lety

      Yes it was a propane heater. If we ever feel the need for hot water on demand I would look at the Chinese diesel heaters / water heaters.

    C'est un plaisir de vous revoir. Avez-vous homologué, en France, le Bear en camping-car ou il est resté camion? Grizzly devait-il également être homologué? Séparément ou ensemble? Merci a vous!

    14:34 why do you go over the silicone with soap water?

    • @leighdearle5965
      @leighdearle5965 Před 4 lety

      I'm a plumber and that's a little trick I was taught during my apprenticeship to smooth the silicone without it sticking to your finger.
      When fitting bathroom basins etc it helps make a really neat job.
      The water needs to be very soapy.
