  • Joshiro Maruyama has one of the best (in my opinion the best) Uchi Mata in the business right now. Everyone knows it's his go to move, everyone prepares for it, but he still manages to succeed with this throw. This is part 1 of Judo study dedicated to Maruyama's phenomenal Uchi Mata. In this part we run through some of the reasons why he is so prolific with this throw and why it is so hard to defend against.

Great analysis. I’ve lost my uchimata a little as got older but this inspires me to get back on it. The grab and go really interesting. I love Maruyamas swagger. Shame he and Abe can’t both be at the Olympics - they are such fun to watch.

I'm not a judo player (I've just recently had some judo highlights pop up in my recs and fell into the rabbit hole), but this channel is seriously one of the best sports analysis channels period. The structure of the videos is really easy to follow and digest, straightforward explanations about what we're examining, immediately providing clear and annotated video clips to illustrate the point. Even the background music is solid - it's not distracting and kind of makes it easier to zone in on the content.
I also really liked how you broke down the different attributes/tactics Maruyama employs and then integrated them together. You almost never see this level of analysis of sport when it comes to looking at specific players beyond superficial remarks (Nadal hits with a lot of topspin, X player is really mobile, Y player is a dual threat, Z player is an "athletic freak" etc. etc.).
I hope you keep making these; this is seriously high quality content. Thanks!

One major component of Uchi Mata that you mention but dont stress enough is Maruyama's flexibility. Its the same as Ono. They are incredible powerful and explosive allied to amazing hip dexterity and flexibility. Basically they can elevate the foot in a 100% vertical stance doing the splits, maintaining balance. Once you can do that, its indefensable. For me their flexibility is what sets their Uchi Mata appart

"When performed incorrectly, it can demolish your opponent's testicles". An old Japanese sensei once told me the "traditional" way to do uchimata was to hit the balls the first time, that way your opponent would let you throw him the second.

@@decodingjudo-grapplerkingd5486 no doubt that it worth. There are so many great judokas and all of them have unique style, maybe not so stunning as Maruyama's or Abe's but it also worth analyzing. Also you can break down theirs other techniques such as Maruyama's yoko tomoenage or anything else. Your channel is the best among judo channels in youtube! Don't leave it!
