Today at Badgerworks, we continue with our Panther build in aid of The Tank Museum at Bovington. In this video, we apply paint and weathering, and make a complete dog's breakfast of putting the wheels on...
This will be a short series of four (probably) videos, building the tank, painting some figures and assembling a simple diorama, after which the whole lot will be auctioned off to support the fine work of The Tank Museum, so hit that subscribe button so you don't miss out!

For someone who doesn't admit to doing armor you did a heck of a good job on that tank
It is genuinely my first ever large scale tank build, but I appreciate the comment :-)
Wow great job, loving those wheels
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
You should feel very happy with " the way it came out " - it is a first class job you have done on the kit - really looking forward to the rest of this project - knock out video.
Thanks buddy, and thanks for your support on Patreon :-)
Nice finished product for someone who does not fancy building armour.
Thanks, I appreciate it :-)
just bought this kit for practice
That camo is bloody good. In the top shot you couldn’t tell there was a turret on top, well the gun gave it away but the turret shape and size was very very well hidden.
Thanks. It's not bad, is it? The random colours break up the outline and make it less discernible. Straight lines don't exist in nature, so draw the eye. Anything that breaks up the outline helps.
Wieder mal sehr sehr geil geworden. Sieht super aus. LG Ohle🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️
Danke :-)
Nice job as always. Good job on the weathering. I do the same thing with the pastels and i use them in both ways....Wet or dry for different effects. Great job!
Thanks, I'm always on the lookout for ways to save money, and one box of pastels costs less than a single pot of weathering powder, so why not? :-)
If you take laquer thinner and tamiya putty mixed, the putty gets thinner yet more workable. It won't dry as quickly as the putty without the thinner. Don't use acrylic thinner,.
Nice one steamie stay safe cheers
Thanks, you too!
For a first 1/35 scale armour build that turned out really well. All through the video I was thinking that I must comment afterwards about Andy's Hobby Headquarters and his excellent tutorials on painting and weathering tanks and tracks, and then you mentioned him yourself! Good job on this, and I'm now looking forward to seeing the figures and diorama :-)
He made a text mention of Night Shift too which is slightly hilarious in that while Uncle has built loads of armor, he's just recently (and reluctantly) dipped his toes into figures and dioramas. For first tries, he got as good results as our Steamgeezer did with his first real armor.
Just goes to show that you can't let your fears restrict you.
Well said. I'm not a great one for figure painting, but they really do add something to a model so it's worth practicing.
I'm mildly impressed. Actually, very impressed. Son #1 and I started this very kit some years back and it sit in the box needing final assembly. I'm going to shamelessly copy some of our techniques and then present the finished article to him. Carry on sir! Thanks for all of the info and artistry. Cheers!
Thanks buddy, and thanks for your support on Patreon :-)
Just goes to show that as long as you know the basics of modeling, you can build anything.
There are certainly transferable skills. Thanks for your support on Patreon :-)

Glad I can finally help a fellow maker.
I've found when applying filler in gaps like that if you use a syringe with a large gauge needle you can create a weld pattern at the same time, I also have been trying another idea of melting the sprue in acetone and putting that through the needle but it's a bit tricky and not 100% perfect as yet.
Another thing I've seen but simply didn't have time to try is using a strip of styrene and melting it in place with solvent, then using the back of a blade to put the weld pattern in it. I'm going to try that at some point.
Hey! Did you prime the rubber tracks before putting on that Andy’s paint mix
I did indeed. I used Hycote black primer from a rattle can.
I have built a few of Tamiya's Panther kits. There should not have been a gap at the front of the hull join. The front top hull piece slots into the two side bits next to the 2 mud guards. Maybe a small bit needed to be shaved off where it goes down into the slots. The Front lower glasiss should then meet the upper hull and not create a gap. Also, I recently started a Tamiya Jagdpanther kit. In that kit it calls for the green colour to be XF61 Dark Green. Not Olive Drab. Anyway, cracking work mate.
I used XF61 on a King Tiger, as suggested in the instructions, but it's very very dark and I wish I'd used XF81.
@@ianthomson9363 for a scale model, you should lighten the colour as real life colours always look to dark on a model. take a look on a real tank from a distance to see what i mean.
@@ianthomson9363 Yeah, also another thing to look out for is this. I started my Jagdpanther kit recently. That kit dates back to 1996, and I have probably had it in my stash since about that time. The instructions call out for XF61 Dark Green. Back then the later released colours, such as XF81 did not exist. Also some older Tamiya kits tell you to mix 2 or 3 paints to get the right colour. But now there may be the right colour in the Tamiya paint range, to not have to mix paints to get the right shade.
@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. That's interesting, I know Tamiya have brought out some new colours but I thought the basics would have been part of the range.
@@ianthomson9363 EG, I know for a fact that Tamiya did not do a cockpit green back in the day. I have a couple of the older 1/48 Tamiya WW2 aircraft kits. The instructions told me to mix 2 colours to get cockpit green. These days Tamiya do XF71 cockpit green. Plus XF76 Gray Green is a lighter shade of cockpit type green if needed.
What's with the cartoon dog at 1:03:48?
It's a reference to everything being fine when it's really not... :-)
Olive Drab on a Panther? Don't show this to the panzer fans as they will go into an apoplectic fit of rage..
Anyway, this is a nice... unconventional... but nice, build of an ancient kit. Great video, thanks for sharing.
german camocolors came as a thick paste and was formulated to be thinned with petrol or water. this greatly influenced the paint results, so there are variations in outcome
@@henkvermeer8652 all true; but Olive Drab is a specific colour used by the US forces and is a mix of black and yellow - there's no green in it. for Olivegrun, OD is far too dark, and has the wrong tonal qualities.
@@cygnusx10 you are right. there is no green in O.D.
Hey, I just went by what it said in the instructions... it specifically called for Olive Drab, so here we are :-)
35:11 why the sad face Mister Panzer ? 😒
German tanks: over engineered, and with ridiculously complicated camo schemes. British and American tanks: easy to use, and fix. Olive drab or Sand. Simple as that.
When I was a kid, my mum hated me buying kits of German tanks. Firstly, because she was a kid during the war, and anything German was still frowned upon. Secondly, the wheel assembly on the larger Panzers would cause me to start effing and blinding, which wound mum up something terrible. Always dry fit. The swearing will be minimised.
Nice result, there.
Thanks. Apparently, a lot of the German armour was initially just plain grey or sand yellow, it was only later they started on the camo patterns. Oh, and there was lots of swearing, trust me ;-)
