  • Some crazy stuff going on in my offline GM mode. Figured I'd make a vid and see if you guys have seen anything like this in your GMs.
    And during the season I only played two games the rest was simulated.

    This is insanely common in NHL gm modes, I remember one year 2BC had an Edmonton team go to the finals / win the cup with a very meh team and two 78 overall goalies. The goalies each had Vezina like records for no reason.
    What I think NHL needs to implement / bring back is the hot and cold streaks. I want players to be able to wing +5 to -5 overall depending on how they are playing, and have that overall lost at the end of the year, similar to how The Show does it. 80 overall player gets on a hot streak, is playing better than he should? bump him up a few points. Goes ahead and goes on a cold streak? bump him down.
    For this to happen the game would ideally need to estimate the performance level of the player based on overall, contract and position type (ideally past performances but that would be pretty hard to crunch for an already slow game). If the player is currently trending higher than that stat line bump up the relevant categories, if they are trending below then drop them. With this system in place you would see some of those guys as likely 85 overalls, and then you can look at your roster and say "damn yeah these guys are having a good year, that makes sense now" and give you the option to trade them while they are hot, or trade for some struggling players in hope that they bounce back.
    I would also want the overalls on the screen displayed as the "effective" overall with the actual overall in smaller font to the top right of it.

    Did this test 10 times to test how it would work, 97 overall offense 95 overall defense 96 overall goaltending, I missed the playoffs five times got swept in the first round twice got beat in the first round twice and won the Stanley Cup going 16 -1

      I couldn't agree more, man. The arbitrary simulation removes the incentive to build a dynasty. Not only this, but it nullifies their newest feature; in-depth drafting. They need to implement an actual engine similar to Eastside Hockey Manager's (it has issues, but is still superior to EA's). Additionally, I find that CPU GM's do not possess any logic whatsoever. For instance, in my GM mode, Edmonton has five 90 overall players (McDavid, Draisaitl, Lafrenière, Jost, and Puljujarvi) and has a 70 overall goaltender. Each year they would miss the playoffs for their lackluster netminding. Any general manager would trade one of these 90 overall players or a second liner (83-85 overall) for a solid goaltender. There is little reason for me to buy NHL19, unless if their simulation engine and GM logic has been revamped. Sadly, I know this will not be the case, as most, like Matt, indicate that EA has done a decent job this year as far as improvements are concerned and this is complete nonsense.

    It's just percentages. A team like that has, say a 1/150 chance to have the kind of year that you are having. You are just playing in that reality. If you made a separate save file with the same team, they would be doing anywhere from shite, to as good as you are now. A team like Tampa, or Nashville, or Toronto has maybe 20-40% chance to have a season like yours. So it seems crazy, but don't think of it like "Oh, they would this well every single time". Think of it like "If I ran 150 simulations on this exact team in their first year, I would get ONE in which they are this good, and I just happened to get it first try".

  • @Jgilbzs
    @Jgilbzs Před 5 lety

    I have noticed that when your team is really bad, teams will play their backup goalies against you. I did almost the same thing, with a lot of similar players as an expansion team and got into the 2nd round with mostly 78-81 overalls. Feeling confident I'd discovered some magical combination of players, I upgraded the team, adding 3 players with OVRs over 85 in the offseason. Came last place the following year. Went from "rebuilder" to "contender" in one offseason, and I think one of the many stupid reasons the 2nd year failed was because most teams stopped playing their backups against me.
    Another thing I found was having Defensive defensemen is important for winning sim games. I cannot explain why but consistently I've found that having a 3rd D pair of, say, Engelland/Girardi as opposed to a faster, puck moving pair, vastly improves team performance in simming. I've encountered many instances of a 3rd pair D pairing of 75-78 ovr, but with decent defensive stats be PLUS 20+ by end of season. Doesn't even matter if they can't skate or shoot for shit. I once had Engelland have 1 goal and 1 assist in 82 games and be a plus 24 on 3rd pair. If you have a hot young Dman you're excited about, and want to get him some NHL experience on the 3rd pair, just don't. Deryk fucking Engelland will be 10 times better than him.
    And as for getting your top forwards to produce more... I honestly have no clue. I've noticed that some players just score a lot and some just don't. I can't even explain as to why they do and don't. Alex DeBrincat who seems to cap at 85 ovr gets 65+ points no matter who you pair him with. Nolan Patrick however, even after years of development and getting him to a 90 ovr, can barely breach 40 points in a season. After a few seasons their OFF awareness is basically the same, yet their performance is consistently way different. I don't get it.

    Offense and Defence awareness effect simulation mostly, that's why Erik Brannstrom always hits 70 point season, it's his offensive awareness jumped up. Defensive defencemen are mainly effected by Defensive awareness.

    Offensive awareness helps with their offensive Sim, defensive awareness helps your defensive Sim, poise helps lower/younger players grow, if you have a 20 yr old med elite on a line with other 20 yr old med elites, he won't grow as fast as if you put him on a line with a center/winger with high poise but is also still a decent player. Said player will grow faster

    • @ericstirling2026

  • @Jvzilla9933
    @Jvzilla9933 Před 6 lety

    I really think that the player types have a huge impact on record... I did a sort of fantasy draft test franchise where I had a line with Jake Debrusk (Sniper) Nick Bjustad (Power Forward) and Evander Kane (Sniper). Although this line had a good amount of points year one, all of their plus minuses were atrocious, this was my second line behind my first line of Brock Boeser (Sniper) McDavid (Playmaker) and Sebastian Aho (TWF). This line did well and my 3rd and 4th lines consisted of all 79-81 overall players who were all TWF except for 1 grinder on the 4th. My team (Boston) ended up making the playoffs but being the last team into the Atlantic with 89 points on the year.

    This nhl sim is damn random, i was on my gm and my record was somewhere 36 wins, 38 losses and 2-4 ot-so losses on trade deadline, after that i went win every game and win stanley cup, with doing a 1 trade, which included abdelkader and some picks for marchessault and switching marchessaults position to LW

  • @sturmflut93
    @sturmflut93 Před 6 lety

    Yeah, it's pretty weird indeed. I just had a run to the stanley cup finals after unloading some older players for picks at the all star break because my team was shitting the bed. My team wasn't that bad, but I traded my starting goalie Pickard (who jumped up to an 88 for some reason, so I thought I'd trade him as long as he has value) to the Rangers for 2 first round picks and Lundqvist, who was 79 overall at that point, listed as a Backup. Well, he got us to the playoffs by himself and in the playoffs, he had the run of his life, had 4 shutouts and a SV% of around 94%. It was a very nice story, the 40 year old King tries to get the cup one last time, but it was definitely weird. Sadly, we lost in Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals, but still nice. :D

  • @whiffsonly2167

  • @milkoil
    @milkoil Před 6 lety +1

    I've always had a problem with players not producing like a 90+ overall guys. And then I trade them and boom point per game guys. Lol it's annoying. I've had a 92 overall playmaker as my number 1 centre for like 4 years he averaged like 60 points. If I trade him tho I know he will put up like 80/ 90. I feel like from nhl 16 to NHL 18 I've only ever simmed and had a top league leading guy like maybe 3 or 4 seasons over the course of like maybe 100 years of gm seasons.
    I play with morale off because I feel like that makes this shit even more ridiculous. And I always sim never play. I'll play elimination games in the playoffs in the 3rd if I need a goal but simming always screws me. It's so random.
    Like I've simmed ene seen rebuilding teams shut me out 8 - 0 lol. It's totally random. When I was 'tanking' to rebuild it took me a year of leaving my entire team in the ahl because for some random fucking reason they were dominating like this.

    I swear its the expansion team aura. I had 3 expansion team playthroughs and all 3 made it to the playoffs. My team which i thought was the worst won the cup in their first year.
    I personally think its also the goalies. Some goalies are just built better than others despite having lower overalls. After all my simulations i found the 3 best goalies are talbot, vasilefsky, and dubnyk. Despite Price, murray, and gibson reaching 95+ overalls they always do just meh. And i played seasons with the fantasy draft so i know its not just their teams.
    As for for the offense and defense im sure some teams just have good and bad years. Especially the young guys, they tend to be inconsistent. My GM mode with the habs had 3 years. one great, one meh, and one horrible. Because my young guys were always changing in overalls.
