Nice bit of history. Great example of a well loved truck under less than ideal conditions. FYI the 93 only came in black & red, white wasn't available till 1994/95
I had a brand new Lightning in 2002. I drove it 72,000 miles from 02-06. It was really a great truck and quite a bit more of a power house than the 351 1st gens. But the 1st gens are really cool! And you were right, the 2nd gens came out as a 1999 model with 360hp. The 2001-2004 had 380hp via a more efficient inter cooler.
Cool truck. I drove one of those a few years ago, not too many are around anymore. They were allover from about Delaware down on the east coast ages ago. They came in red too. that was the color of the one i drove
I’m still stuck on the wondering aspect if it’s supercharged or turbo charged. A supercharger whines with NO blowoff, and a turbo can or can’t blowoff depending on if it has a wastegate to release pressure slowly or a blowoff valve to release it all at once. But I do love this truck. After deployment when I get home January 2019 I’m finally picking up my 1993 SVT Lightning. I currently have a 2004 SVT Lightning in what ford called “True Blue”. It’s number 63 out of 1,130 I believe.
Yeah, those SVT Lightnings were a real big deal out West too, I never understood it myself... the freakin sticker shock compared to a regular F-150 was astonishing. I remember one of my tool guys bought one new after his divorce. I felt bad for the guy.
I believe red was the original color, but I could be wrong. He's wrong about the competition though. GM's answer to that year Lightning was the 454 short bed. (the 1st Silverado SS)
The only options was a tube bumper or a painted one and the center console. Stock gt 40 p heads and intake speed density which doesn't work well with any upgrades. Mine is Red.
So did you just spray the whole underneath with some ospho? Let it sit and then just spray over it with some undercoat material or do you have to rinse the ospho off? Thanks!
you kidding? East Coast (at least New England) is the rust capital of the world. The amount of salt used in our winters could rot anything. Most vehicles are lucky to last 10 years

Powered by a 240 hp version of the 5.8L V8, the Lightning used the 4-speed automatic transmission from the F-350 (normally paired with the 7.5L or diesel V8s). Though slightly slower than the discontinued GMC Syclone, the Lightning retained much of the towing and payload capacity of its F-150 counterpart. The Lightning was produced from 1993 to 1995; it was discontinued as Ford began design work on the 1997 F-150. For 1999, the SVT Lightning returned after a three-year hiatus. As with its 1993-1995 predecessor, the design of the Lightning used the F-150 as a basis with a number of suspension modifications. Instead of a model-specific engine, the Lightning now used the 5.4L engine from the F-150; fitted with a supercharger, it produced 360 hp (increased to 380 hp in 2001). As before, the transmission was borrowed from the F-350 diesel pickups. In 2004, the Lightning was discontinued, as it was not included in the redesigned F-150 model line.
Having a centrifugal supercharger on there without a intercooler kinda defeats the purpose of even having supercharger on it in the first place. The only thing your really doing is really blowing hot air into the engine. (!FAIL)
Pretty much. Of course,, a supercharger - especially if it's got low boost - isn't going to heat the air that much - not like a turbo would - but it still would be much better with an intercooler. This is set up kinda like the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP from the late 90s (3.8, supercharged, no intercooler) - they made reasonable hp (somewhere around 300, I believe), but not a real powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination.
Half that shit isnt factory. If its upgraded good but this guy wasted money on interior "upgrades". 93 black or red, 94-95 red white black with none supercharged....99-04 supercharged and 4 different varieties of colors (maybe 5 if you count the sonic blue change) and supercharged.
You really need to ditch that billet grille that is on there. It looks really makes the front of that truck look ugly put the front grille back to the way it came from ford.
You could literally see the pleasure in your face driving that awesome little truck :)
That truck is you man, you need a nice truck project! Thanks for showing us the Lightning!
Ford never claimed frame upgrades for the Lightning. That truck would look nicer with stock grille, hood, etc.
Nice bit of history. Great example of a well loved truck under less than ideal conditions.

The twin I beam front suspension(twin traction beam is 4x4 only) is STILL used in 2017 F250/F350 2wd trucks! 51 years and going.

Cool truck. I drove one of those a few years ago, not too many are around anymore. They were allover from about Delaware down on the east coast ages ago. They came in red too. that was the color of the one i drove
My dad owns a red lighting. I drive it all the time. So much fun.

Of course we all know what the new SVT F150 is
Ford put a special 3/4 ton frame, standard cab short bed, which wasn't available in the F250s.
ive seen a few red ones also here in detroit, michigan
I believe red was the original color, but I could be wrong. He's wrong about the competition though. GM's answer to that year Lightning was the 454 short bed. (the 1st Silverado SS)
which the lightning would kick its ass all day every day
+steve pittman
Oh, no doubt it would.
The only options was a tube bumper or a painted one and the center console.
Stock gt 40 p heads and intake speed density which doesn't work well with any upgrades. Mine is Red.
Seems like the OBS f series's didn't even come straight from the factory
They aslo came in red
Not in 93 only 94 and 95 and less than 700 in 95
that's a E4OD transmission. and 95 did came supercharged. I like the 94-95 sterling wheel and tubular rear bumper
No it didn’t. The fist supercharged lightning wasn’t until the 2nd gen in 1999 (99 to 04)
Red exterior available too.
I didn't hear whether you said who made the supercharger. Interesting truck.
Do nice truck or car like that have to have all the smog stuff like Cali
I miss my 93 lightning...
I only seen black,white,and red
So did you just spray the whole underneath with some ospho? Let it sit and then just spray over it with some undercoat material or do you have to rinse the ospho off? Thanks!
You think that east coast, could be as damaging as the west? Just asking. Love your channel!
you kidding? East Coast (at least New England) is the rust capital of the world. The amount of salt used in our winters could rot anything. Most vehicles are lucky to last 10 years
My dad own a 2002 ford lighting it's silver.
The first year they only came in Red or Black, and only 2 or 3k were built.
Tulio Santos 2,691 black and 2,585 of the red were made in ‘93. I have a red 93 I’m restoring right now....love these trucks!!
came in , black , red , white , or could order in any color for more $$$$$
What is the tire size of your truck?
Nice :)

James Hengl they had a Paxton supercharger option for like an extra 2300.00. it had to be installed after the fact. it came in a box, dealer install.

There white red and black
i hate the twin i beam suspension ford ran that crap up in to the 2000s on the ford vans
+east coast lowlife its very stout but not meant for performance or ride quality
It's still used on Superduty trucks.

It's not my truck broh, just showing it.
Maybe suggest to the owner that it might look nicer with the factory grill in a friendly way.
