Levelling individual frets is too risky especially for a beginner/self taught luthier because if you over-files it will become too lower and there is no way to fix it anymore, I was experiencing it before 😂
Really nice looking Greco Les Paul - I own a few myself, and they are excellent instruments. Personally I would never go for 1mm string action... Surely it can be done, but so many factors are a part of getting there... Neck relief, as you showed, and the overall condition of the frets. The frets has to be perfect, in order to minimize the potential buzzing, with setting the action that low. Thanks for showing all this, Kris, it's excellent value! Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Just had to fix my mid-2010s Squier Bass VI, the action around the 12th fret was crazy high. Pulled the truss rod nut out all the way to make sure there wasn’t an issue with the rod first, then slowly got the neck to a slight upward bow without strings on it. It uses some beefy strings (LaBella Flatwound, 26-95) so I figured any relief will come from the string tension at pitch.
1mm string height is definitely hard to do with frets that are worn down - with a plek'd guitar it would be much easier. 08:00 lol I never heard Chris speaking german ;)
Great stuff Kris. Thank you very much for the straightforward explanation. It would be great if you guys could do an episode about how to set up a floyd rose.
Hi, we actually have multiple episodes on the Floyd Rose. Here's the Floyd setup one: czcams.com/video/2BD6q5Ou96E/video.html Check out the Guitar Tech Tips playlist for all the themes we covered in the series (it's a lot). Thanks a lot! //Kris

Q2: If I order to be set up before shipping my guitar can I speak with whom ever will do the set up before work begins? Q3? You got any D or “art piece only” Pia in stock and how much geld for such a item?🤣
hi kris. one question regarding low actions setups. why is it possible to have lower action on gibson guitars vs fenders? is it the neck angle? i had both and i could always set up my gibsons way lower than the fender. i have a team built CS strat with a flat 16" radius that also had a low action plek setup. i still cannot get the strings as much down as with my gibsons without them fretting out. even though they have a lower radius. it can't be a radius thing, it cannot be the frets (medium jumbo, plekd on all my guitars). the nut sots are also done by the plek machine. i'm clueless. cheers!
I am laughing because I didn't get the meaning of FRET FIX at once due to my first language being Portuguese. I thought it was a joke with the word NETFLIX... Whatever matters is that you guys always bring interesting subjects to us. Thank you a lot!

Good video. Two questions, does a dead straight neck cause any playing problems? Second, how to fix a dead spot on the neck at the 17th fret on the low E string? Just doesn't ring. Thanks
Thanks Kris for the video. Same exact issue on my old Aria pro2 rs850 with the same action height and even bigger strings... And I suspect this is the exact same problem, I'm pretty sure I have a low fret... I've been procrastinating, I need to find a fret rocker :)
Hey Kris, I love these helpful videos. Once you check the frets, set the truss rod, set the bridge height and all looks good... one thing no one ever seems to say is how much buzz is acceptable? Because I never have none playing technique aside. Can you help with that?
Kris you should change strings in my house I have 3 feline helpers who are not above pinching strings and running off with them 👍 It’s frustrating !!! 😁
Hey Chris, take a look in the description box, I put some links to other episodes of Guitar Tech Tips, where I show what I'm using and how it all goes. Also, check out the full Guitar Tech Tips playlist, we've made a video on most things you can think of in terms of guitar setups and fixes. Cheers //Kris
Hey Chris, maybe a dumb question. When i first bought lemon oil, i was told to be carefull not to get it on my hands, as that could be bad (FOr the skin, i guess?), and in the video, you spread it on the fretboard using you finger. Have i just been misinfromed, or is not lemon oil you used? Great video as always by the way :)
Hmmm, careful with an oil that you put on the fretboard of your guitar - the part of the instrument you will touch with your fingers most of the time? Never have any problems with the lemon oil which I use for my fretboards for so many times!
@@ArendtMusic Just checked the bottle of my most used Dunlop 65 Lemon Oil - no such hint! Have fun cleaning your fretboard - BTW not use it on maple fretboards!
If you'd explain how to get to the 1mm string action across the board without buzzing that would be amazing. It sound unbelievable for me but I have no idea why you'd need such thing (shred, duh) When you're doing spot fret repairs like this one when do you know that it's the right height? It looks like you checked it with rocker, masked, took the file and went for it. Which is kinda scary to me Is that fret file with groove necessary for such a bold move or is my fine flat file with safe ages enough?
Haha, thanks Luca! I really don't think so though. I think I'm just old enough to give less of a damn about many things in life. 😆 I'm way less worried about looking and acting cool, which is definitely something I enjoy. Cheers buddy! //Kris
Would you do a pickup swap? I have a Fender Nashville Tele and would like to switch out the middle pickup with a single sized humbucker from Seymour Duncan.
Hi, I'm not sure if that's a factory feature or if one of the owners turned the pickup around. It might be a Peter Green "tribute". One thing is important to know though: turning a humbucker around doesn't make it sound like Peter Green's Les Paul. It's still going to be in-phase in the middle position. It might change the tone of the guitar in the neck position though, which depends on the pickup (and that doesn't have to do anything with the phase). I'll have a video on this subject very soon on my own channel. It's "Kris Barocsi" here on youtube. Cheers //Kris
Thanks Joseph! 😄 I love how every guitar and every issue is slightly different and you have to figure out the best way of fixing it. It never gets boring and you learn something new every day. Take care! //Kris
Any idea on the age of the guitar ? I haven't seen a Gibson were the truss rod is adjusted with an Allen wrench. But to be honest I haven't worked on many USA Gibson.
Hey Xavi, yes it's the Harley. I compared it to a Stew Mac fret rocker and made sure all sides are straight before I started using this tool in the studio. The one I have here is definitely precise. That being said, I highly recommend making sure that a tool is accurate enough before using it, wether it's a Harley Benton tool, or from any other brand. I've seen imperfections even from very expensive tools brands so it's always a good idea. Cheers //Kris
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses thanks Kris! May I add an additional question? You checked the fret height with no strings on the guitar. Doesn’t that throw the neck relief out of whack, as the strings aren’t pulling on the neck? 🤔
Holy smokes, that fretboard was gross. That one shot with all the green stuff around the fret end. Yikes ! How can someone let their guitar get that gross I will never get. I've even heard customers getting upset when a tech cleaned their fretboard/guitar. wtf
When you play a note on a guitar, it should ring for a certain amount of time, but if the note stops real fast like it was for him in the video, the note is fretting out.
