    One our favorite hikes. Enjoyed this hike on Jan 3.The first day we tried, it was too crowded to park. We went back at 8 am the next day, and there was hardly anybody there. (filled up later, though) We've gone there for about 40 years now. All times of the year. Still enjoyable to do. At low tide, you can walk to UCSD and back on the beach. You have to watch the tide times, though!

      Nice, 40 years, that's impressive! I try to do it once a year too, it's always so beautiful. Getting there in the morning is a must. Later in the day it can be nuts. It mellows out after 2-3pm though. You just have to make sure you don't get locked in.

    I grew up in San Diego, so I was here many times as a kid and always thoroughly enjoyed it! There is a reserve extension a mile inland to the northeast. The trees are taller (less wind-trimming), and the trails are quieter (less foot traffic!).

      @Hikingguy  Před 4 lety +1

      Nice, didn't know you were from SD. It's funny you mention the extension, I actually hiked all the trails there on the day I shot this guide. Very nice and not crowded like you mentioned. Will get a guide up for there at some point.

      @@Hikingguy I actually prefer the extension part with the larger trees and rare Del Mar Manzanitas!

    FYI: I went on Monday and the road he suggests to drive up was closed so you have to walk up the hill to get to the second parking lot where the main trails are. Ranger said it had been closed for a couple of weeks and will continue to be due to tree trimming.

      The iPhone is solid but not sure if I'd say more accurate than the 66sr.

    Thank you for posting this video. I’m planning to visit SD in Dec. Is this a 3 mi round trip hike? Do you recommend doing this trail in Dec? Thanks!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  Před 2 lety

      Yup, it's great in Dec - you'll have a blast

    So you paid to park? If you don’t want to pay to park you have to park near the beach if you can find it. But you said to park near the visitors center so you paid?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  Před rokem

      check the guide on the website for parking info - park pass to enter and then drive up the hill to the lot by the visitor center
