Hey, glad you dug the video! To answer your sound geekery questions: 2 mics - Ear Trumpet Edwina for vox and guitars/mando & a shure sm81 on the bass, both straight into my UAD twin, into logic, with some light eq and valhalla vintage reverb. Then Maserati master plug in on the master bus with a little bit of compression there. That's it!
Yooooo!! Thank you guys so much for commenting and giving me the geeky engineering stuff! I love that. All great stuff too. Love the Valhalla...and Maserati is killer. Hell yeah! You guys rock. Absolutely loved this, and so glad you guys enjoyed the reaction. Much love! Looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers y'all!
🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
Looking forward to hearing you guys again in May. See ya in Chico!
Enjoyed the show this past winter in Seattle with AJ Lee opening and then playing this song during the BC set.
@@SJCoug1 awwww I’m so jealous! I want to see them so bad! As soon as we moved from the east coast to the west…we saw that they’re touring the area we just left. Grrrrrrrrrr!!
🤘🏽😎🤘🏽
Gorgeous all of it.
This one went right on my playlist. One of my favorite Neil Young songs to start with, and beautifully reimagined! One of the things I love so much about you both is that you will listen to any genre and give it a chance based on the music itself, not the genre! ❤️🎶
Excellent!! Thank you for your sweet words, Rebecca. It gives us so much joy when friends like you span genres with us. So many friends come for a specific band or genre, but you see it all and we love this!! Thank you 🙏🏻 again.
I remember back in the day when bluegrassers tended to have multi mics for voices and instruments....... and then came Del McCoury and the boys. It was quite a choreography spectacle as they leaned in, leaned out, and switched positions without colliding for vocal dynamics and solos. Soon more and more bands were seen doing the one mic setup, but it seemed the bass always had its own mic setup.
I love the whole sound/mic-ing discussion!
Bluegrass - multiple options. Please take a deep dive. Old school Bluegrass traditionally had one or two mics. Look at Bill Monroe/Ralph Stanley
That type of mic is made for this type of acoustic recording they often and other mics to it but it will pick up sound from several feet away.people control volume on these by moving in and out that's why she lifts the mandolin.
The sound on the standup bass carries pretty well and it is a small room. I've never considered they might have DI, but no doubt it's possible. I've seen both bands live and on the stages they all have individual mics as well as DI's for their instruments. Now you have me super curious too!
BTW, I see the mic stand. But I don't see the mic!
I don't know enough to know for sure, BUT I AM a musician. And I've done some studio work. Being an audio technician, you know! Bass is omnipresent. It is not directional. I have never played in a band with a standup bass. So, I don't know for sure. But my guess would be that it is all through the one mic. Typically, bluegrass bands like this tend to stick to tradition. And they typically perform in front of one mic. Plus, what does it really matter? They sound amazing! I know, the tech side of you wants to know. I would like to know as well. I might be able to find out. AJ Lee now is in a band called AJ LEE and BLUE SUMMITT. If you haven't heard them, you should give them a listen. They now have a guitar player by the name of Scott Gates. Scott is the son of a good friend of mine that I went to high school with. I also used to jam with his uncle (also named Scott) who after high school went on to play bass with Three Dog Night. Let me see what I can find out. But I like this video and will now follow you guys! BTW, Scott Gates used to play in a band called The Salty Suites. You should definitely check them out. However, he played strictly mandolin with that band. You should hear this guy on mandolin!!
Looks like @broscomatose chimed in with some interesting detail about what was used recording this session. Scott is an amazing songwriter, singer and guitar player. I've been finding some old stuff of his on CZcams and see he plays mandolin as well. Correct me if you know, but the mandolin is totally different than guitar; knowing how to play one will not help learning the other instrument. Is that true?
Thanks for the great info and the suggestions, @sedleyjensen5636!!! Appreciate you taking the time - and we recently covered a AJ Lee & Blue Summit song ("Faithful"). As Joel mentioned, we were luck enough to get a comment from The Brothers Comatose. Here is what they said, if you are interested:
