    About the lack of sapphire: the big problem with sapphire is that once it gets a hard enough impact, it doesn’t scratch, it shatters. A scratched plastic or mineral crystal still protects the display and movement which means the watch is still usable, but a shattered crystal means the whole watch is going to suffer further damage before it can be sent to Casio for repair.

      That's not exactly accurate with Sapphire. My rangeman previous version has mineral as well but there are plenty of companies on Amazon that make screen protectors three for five bucks. I bought about 20 of them and every 6 months I peel off the old one and put a new one on and my mineral crystal looks brand new.

      How many people managed to actually shatter their sapphire glass.. if you're one of them, good luck. Go play the lottery and suck it up buttercup. You'd get struck by lightning before that ever happened! 😂

      Yes, Sapphire can be more brittle than glass however, it depends upon the thickness and shape of the crystal. I use ordinary mobile phone flexible screen protectors (cut to size- see my videos/blog) to give that extra bit of impact resistance as I wear mine caving (GWG 1000) and snorkelling. The thing I don't like is the Biomass plastics, bad idea to fulfil woke concepts.

    Great analysis. I think you really hit the nail on the head about it's limitation in setting routes and waypoints while adding new fitness feature. The "Range"man should help the user with navigation first and foremost. I think it falls short of that, and the price hike goes to the fitness hardware that I don't need for adventuring. Ironically, while it's trying to get in the Garmin game, its adventuring features, which is G-Shock's home turf, are actually worse than the Garmin Instinct 2X.

    A Rangeman 9400 that kept true Tough Solar, Multiband 6 and added the MiP is what most fans wanted...a sub-Garmin, tethered Transformer with a heap of Fitness Features incl. the hugely draining and bulky HR Sensors is what was delivered.
    They've done the same with the new MiP squares as well (Im looking at you H5600!) - What fans wanted was a 5610 but with MiP, what we got was a chunky Fitbit but with a worse App/Ecosystem. 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @marcusoroberts
    @marcusoroberts Před 6 měsíci +1

    Great review thanks. I bought the yellow version and my comments are; the altimeter is massively inaccurate by hundreds of feet everyday and needs constant calibration. The barometer information is set to 'On' but keeps switching off. Strange symbol above the Tidegraph and not figured out what it is. I've calibrated the Barometer and that is now very constant. The yellow colour looks fab, but is picking up black stains on the left like crazy (I do wash my clothes!). If anyone has answers to any of these gripes, I'd love to hear back!

    • @spyder6423
      @spyder6423 Před 6 měsíci +3

      The altimeter in it is barometric pressure-based. If you are moving up and down in altitude a lot then its baseline changes and it requires calibration. The barometer in it works best when you are not having rapid elevation changes. The idea was that you could set the barometric pressure and zero it at the beginning of your hike and it would be accurate altitude readings. The altimeter and the barometer run on the same sensor.
      More expensive altimeter barometer systems use GPS altitude confirmation.
      Long story short, the watch itself unless it has a system that uses GPS to confirm, doesn't know if the pressure is changing because of weather or because you're going higher and lower in altitude.
      Also, The barometer turning on and off is the severe weather notification. When you activate it, it will monitor the barometric pressure every 10 minutes instead of every hour to notice for weather changes, but it defaults to off after 24 hours.

    i find myself being held back by what the website describes as "solar-assisted" charging. i tried to read the online manual and it says the watch would not be fully charged by solar power alone. so how "solar" is it really? i wouldn't want to have just another gadget i would need to charge every other day. incidentally having to do that wouldn't be quite in line with its positioning as a survival tool.

    It sure looks cool and rugged, but according to another channel that is where it ends!
    It is not nearly as rugged as the new Mudman (GW-9500) that has almost identical functionality of the first Rangeman (GW-9400). The lugs wear out fast, so be warned.
    Then there is the issue of slow reactions and "loading" the functions, and the necessity of pressing buttons anew every time you want to up or down a digit instead of being able to press and hold them. Just too many annoying quirks for a $500 watch. Then, who was asking for a connected fitness watch named "Rangeman"??? The stopwatch gets less precise for "legibility", as the MIP display is to slow for 1/100th of a sec....
    The GPS is there - but not for navigation, as was the case of its predecessor (GPR-1000). The solar charging is there, but only for basic watch functionality, not for the main battery. This is so half thought through that I crossed if off my list of potential watches to own. But thanks for the video!

    • @georgeg1947
      @georgeg1947 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Yes, if you turn off all the health and fitness features and also put the watch in airplane mode, the Bluetooth will shut off completely and the Rangeman will never ever need any charging and the watch will solely be powered and run only on the solar panel that’s underneath the crystal. The solar panel powers the time, day, date, stopwatch, countdown timer, world time, sunrise/sunset times, moon phase, compass, barometer, altimeter, all the alarms, the snooze alarm and the step counter. These functions that I just listed are powered 100% by the solar panel. You will never ever need to charge the watch with the USB cable when you set the watch up like I mentioned above and if you use only the features that I just listed above.
      I one the same gpr-h1000 Rangeman and I wear mine 24/7 and never charged it ever since I purchased it. The solar panel underneath the crystal charges the watch with the natural sunlight outside and with the ambient light inside the house. The only thing that you need to do is just wear the watch and let the solar panel do its thing. That’s it. You wear the Rangeman as a G-Shock just like you wear all other solar G-Shocks and you allow the outside sunlight and the indoor ambient light power the watch. You will never ever need to charge your watch if you do this.
      The only time that you will need to charge your watch will be is if you turn on the heart monitor and the oxygen sensor. Otherwise, you will never need to charge your Rangeman if you keep the heart monitor and the oxygen sensor off and the Bluetooth off. Keep the watch in airplane mode and wear it like a regular G-Shock like I do and your Rangeman will never need any charging. I hope that I cleared up everything for you snd answered your concerns and questions.

    • @flynndean
      @flynndean Před 6 měsíci

      You've never had a Sapphire watch shatter have you? It's remarkably easy to do! For it's intended purpose, I would argue that Mineral Display is the much better choice for an outdoorsman's watch as although it is more prone to light scratches, the scenarios in which a Mineral Display watch will keep working when damaged vastly outnumbered those of Sapphire Glass (if Sapphire smashes...it basically explodes and is no-more)

    • @FuglyStick

    • @flynndean
      @flynndean Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@FuglyStick Sure, but then Mineral Glass has better transparency and MUCH better scratch resistance than acrylic at the expense of being SLIGHTLY more brittle. It's MUCH less brittle than Sapphire whilst being more prone to scratches - Let's call it the middle-ground. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I've had a very active job for ~20yrs (I'm having to slow down now) - trust me...when Sapphire goes, it really goes!
      If you're buying a G-Shock for it's intended purpose, you're going to value survivability at the expense of some scratch resistance (indeed...scratches on a G-Shock arguably make them look even better!)

    • @FuglyStick
      @FuglyStick Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@flynndean Dude, I own 3 G Shocks, all of them have mineral glass. And I wear my G Shocks in the environment they were engineered for - I was wearing a G Shock when I lost a finger to the wood splitter 3 months ago. The issue of scratch resistance has never been much of an issue for G Shocks because their cases are designed in such a way as to limit contact with the glass; put a G Shock face down on a sheet of sandpaper and move it around and the bezel will keep the sandpaper from contacting the glass. But that same protection applies to a sapphire glass as well. If you are paying premium watch price, you should expect premium watch materials. And I'm going to guess that anything that will damage a sapphire glass in an over built g shock watch is going to damage mineral glass as well.
      I don't have time for this. Have a nice day.

But the overall operational specs are the exact same. The Casio G-Shock Rangeman has dropped off since the GPR-B1000. That was the best one so far. But then I found out that Casio-Japan knew of a design flaw that causes the battery to drop off when it gets exposed to temperatures over 95 degrees F. Other than that flaw, that version of the Rangeman is the best. Save your money and buy the GBD-H2000 instead
