Even before he was killed Hosea was struggling to get through to Dutch. One could argue Dutch had always dismissed him as soon as Micah joined the gang, but definitely by the time of the St. Denis robbery. Not sure if it had ever been confirmed, but a theory was that Dutch suffered a head injury in the trolly crash; after that, he started to become really aggressive and pushing the gang to it's limits physically and "morally." Regardless, Hosea's death was certainly the final nail in the proverbial coffin for the gang. With him gone, the angel whispering in Dutch's ear also died, leaving only the demon in the other.

The reason Micha is appealing to Dutch is not because he manipulates him somehow, but because Micha is the "ideal" outlaw version in Dutchs vision, high ego, high greed(desire to succeed), eagerness to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, those are the qualities Dutch likes about him, the reason Dutch doesent like Hosea, Arthur and John is because they dont want to be that "ideal" outlaw, Dutch was always the same, its just that harsh times pushed his "real" persona out.

Arthur helps, of course, once he gets over his own issues - but Hosea, Sadie, Charles. Hell, even Uncle despite his lumbago. RDR2 tells a lot of tales but my favorite is Marston’s origin story and how several lift him up.

I’ve gotta say, Hosea is dead accurate about his quote “you’re not as dumb as you act, John Marston” people often see John as dull, but in reality he and Hosea are the first two gang members to notice that Dutch was losing his mind. I don’t think that it would be unrealistic to say that John, Lenny, and Hosea are probably the smartest members of the Van Der Linde gang.

John is easily one of the most intelligent in the Vanderline gang. By 1911(rdr1) he is incredibly well spoken and articulate, philosophical even. And yes, as you say, he is one of the first to pick up on Dutch’s descent.
There is a reason that in the credits he is called “Dutch’s wayward protege” and everyone calls him golden boy. He would have succeeded Dutch one day if the gang didn’t go to shit.
