      Seasoned commander players learn board presence is not the only thing to take into account with threat assessment. 2 big creatures will take a while to kill everyone but a combo player or someone who can go off and do something like Josh did is a bigger threat with a full grip of cards. I stopped watching these guys a while ago, don’t get me wrong props to them for being so popular and I hope they continue to grow, I just prefer to watch the commander shows where the hosts like to change up their play styles, even try things they arnt used to. I saw Numot was playing so I tuned in, but it was the same as I remember, Josh basically plays the same deck every game just with a different commander, he def drops the rhystic more than anyone else, and since it’s such a low cmc card, it always takes over games early, just not my cup of tea but I’m sure a lot of people do enjoy, anyway, was nice to see Numot, now on to the other commander shows 😁

    (SPOILERS, don't read until you have watched the episode.)
    I think the Eldrazi deck looks insane. That deck has such a head start with all the mana accelerants. I just wonder what it has to do to actually get the finish in a game like this. The board kept growing and growing and looking more ominous, but in the end, Jimmy only managed to reduce his own life total and nobody else's. I wish there was a bit more interaction in the game. Amy really was the only one attempting to interact and slow down the board. The combo finish out of nowhere was pretty, but also a bit unfortunate, because I would've loved to see more from Amy's and Kenji's decks.

    • @BlueGriffin20

      @ExHyperion Před 10 měsíci +5

      he didnt draw into any of his board wipes, All Is Dust, Ugin, The Spirit Dragon, and Calamity of the Titans would have cleaned up the game, also Amy should have targeted rhystic studies instead of wondrous crucible at that point in the game but the "let's gang up on strongest player" instinct got to her.

    • @tonysmith9905
      @tonysmith9905 Před 10 měsíci

      Colorless has a certain lack for interaction. Not any good targeted removal, best options that aren't super niche cost 5+ mana. Has plenty of board wipes, but the lower cost ones still blow up your own stuff. The ones that are one sided are all high mana cost.
      And every one knows that big dumb beaters don't finish games on their own. Needs either to have obscene synergies or flat out combo. Sure, Zhulodok is value town once he gets running, but it's VERY difficult to find colorless cards that will generate enough value to hold up your deck in the long run. So the decks that do win even semi consistently either tend to be turbo ramp into the Eldrazi Titans to close out games fast, or combo. Neither of which casuals enjoy much.

    Jimmy was the only one who even tried to play around the Rhystic study, giving Josh only 2 draws. Amy and Kenji played as though it wasn't even there giving Josh 4-5 cards each. Shockingly, a combo focused deck when allowed to draw 11 cards in the space of 3 turns does tend to be able to win the game.
    You know the bit that bugs me though? On every podcast that they mention, talk about or evaluate cards like Rhystic Study they reinforce that you should *always* pay the tax. Yes, it slows you down. However, it is better that you slow down than you ramp another player straight to their win condition because you can't be bothered properly assessing threat levels.
    After the first rotation of the board with Rhystic down Amy even picks up on it, asking Josh how many cards he has in hand. "Eight" he answers. That's nearly as many cards as everyone else at the table combined. And what do they do? In the next cycle Amy and Kenji draw him a total of 6 cards due to not paying.

      Fully agreed, it's a recurring theme. Josh sets up a card draw engine, people ignore it too long for some reason, he wins. The only times I saw this get countered, is when his excessive drawing was turned against him (like with mill, Altar of Dementia got him that way twice). I always wonder in how far these episodes are scripted, since I find it highly unlikely that no-one knows this by now.

      Its a bit of a tough situation, she needed to catch up to Jimmy otherwise he might run away with the game so if she plays with 1 or 2 less mana each turn to pay the rhystic study she doesn't do what she needs to in order to get going and just falls behind miserably.

      Bro it’s edited to shit, there’s no coincidence that every game Josh gets RS and every game no one removes it. Ever.

    Has the chance to get rid of rhystic study, gets rid of a card that lets jimmy gain 2 life

      Kozilek the great distortion is better. See how Jimmy was empty handed? That zulodok. Kozi gets you a full 7.

      Zhulodok is much easier to cast though and ideally you’d get card advantage from the cascade. Definitely not as reliable but seems like it will make for more fun games

    I don't know why I keep watching these. It's just Josh is allowed to draw a million cards and then wins...

    Personal opinion, that Binding the Old Gods should have hit the Rhystic.
    Edit: The 1st* Binding

    Just goes to show how powerful rhystic study is. Jimmy had an incredible start, but the table let Josh draw so many cards the advantage couldn’t be beaten
