- How strong can earthquakes REALLY get? Watch this video to find out!
Special thanks to @CaSeismograph for allowing me to use their seismograph readings! This channel is the only 24/7 live homemade seismograph in the world and is located near Los Angeles, California.
I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. All these simulations take into consideration only the shaking caused in close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter. Also, a friendly reminder that for this video's purpose, I have shortened the actual duration of the simulation. Any earthquake over M 7.5 could last for more than a minute. The great Tohoku quake that hit Japan in March 2011 had a magnitude of 9 and lasted for about 5 minutes.
-------------------
This project took me more than a week to finish, and I would so appreciate if you guys could SHARE this video on social media or any other apps! :)

These earthquake simulations were created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.

And Shindo is more easier

Kandilli Observatory reports, change of geographic shapes in some places and not a single solid building remains in Antakya confirm this. 7.7 is the number reported only by Turkey. The quality of your videos is getting insane! The work you're putting in definitely shows
I appreciate that! It's crazy that I have all this patience and dedication... but it is so fulfilling
2:38 it’s amazing how the ceiling light still functions despite being completely separated from the wiring above the ceiling.
Actually earthquakes can kill people even in open fields , severe earthquakes generate huge landslides
How would they kill people in open fields? I get that if they were near trees, a tree could fall in them. Or if near water, it could flood and kill them that way. But in a flat, open field without trees or water in it?
@@scootermom1791 In principal any form of a thrust displacement fault can kill people by generating rapid topographic differences which are highly unstable and prone of immediate collapse. This is even more likely if there is a a thick loosely consolidated sediment load as best exemplified by the near total destruction of the New Madrid quake series. Liquefaction as a whole can be very deadly and that particular quake series involved some of the most severe examples in documented history.
@@Dragrath1I hadn't heard of that series. We are prone to liquifaction in many areas of my state. In some ways, I have feared that more than having an earthquake. The thought of the ground being able to suck you and your dwelling up into it is terrifying. That's the extreme, of course, but that's how I picture liquifaction working.
Anyway, thank you for your reply! I hadn't thought about liquifaction or ground thrusts. I guess the latter could, hypothetically, throw someone off their feet in a field, which could cause a bad enough fall to kill them.
And massive cracks and sink holes
Anything can kill people in the right circumstances. A paper clip has killed a person. Elmers glue has killed a person. Let’s not be petty.
One detail that I found very interesting was the sound of the confusion outside the building! Congratulations, I'm enjoying seeing the evolution of this channel!
Bro, I live in the earthquake prone area, based on my observation when large magnitude quake hit, the shaking doesnt stop directly after the largest jolt arrive, the high frequency feel to be stop after the strongest jolt but closer look, the ground - building still move and sway gently by the long periode (low frequency wave). Keep it up bro gettin better time by time 🙌
BRO THATS INSANELY GOOD
I know you have 21.3K subs but i still think your a bit underrated!
The sounds, the actual simulation, just beutiful! 👍😊
Thank you so much for saying all this! You just gave me so much more motivation for my future projects!
so cool! This is sure to serve as an example of earthquake safety for the general public.
hope there is a lot of educational value in this video
Thanks for putting in Richter Scale values as well. I am used to those and having them alongside the other one is very helpful. This looks really good.
you're welcome! notice that for intensity II, the Richter magnitude is 5 - but the scenario was at a far distance from epicenter. So in a way, Richter value is very deceptive :)
@@EarthquakeSim Yea, I saw that note about it being quite distant. I think putting both scales on your videos will help old farts like me get used to the new scale.
@@richardthomas5362 Its possibly also depending on how you grew up. In Germany, everybody knows about Richter Scale* but barely anyone knows Intensity Scales, even though Intensity Scales are much older. On the opposite, the Shindo Scale is used in Japan to describe Earthquakes. Earthquake Early Warnings and News Reports about them always include a Intensity Map.
*For large Earthquakes (M6+) the Richter Scale isn´t used anymore. For that we have (many) other Scales like the Moment Magnitude Scale. But explaining all that confusing stuff would take to long ^^.
@@lukasrentz3238 I am in America in a non-earthquake prone area, so the few times an earthquake gets reported it is usually big, and the lamestream media uses the Richter scale.
@@richardthomas5362 me know if

another video nice, love how it includes screaming sounds and the tv details and stuff.
it's all about the details :)

@@EarthquakeSim aw hell yeah that sounds awesome! do you think i can send you a photo via email? thanks
1:50 i love that eas playing in the background
This brings some awesome perspective into what is otherwise a _very_ subjective intensity scale. I was in the Sylmar quake of 1971 in Los Angeles, which was a 6.6, and I never attempted a guess at the intensity of shaking at my house in Long Beach at the time. _This_ demonstration would indicate that at my location it was a Mercalli scale of high-V to low VI. Worst one I'd ever been in so at the time I might've over-estimated the intensity because I had no basis for comparison. _This_ clears it up tremendously.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm happy that you've found my simulation to be valuable in understanding your perspective of the Sylmar earthquake 😊
Wonderful simulation as always. :)

My earth quake
i remember being awoken by a 7.9-8.0 earthquake a few months ago, and seeing in this scale is also scary
I've been living in Alaska for almost 10 years and have lived through earthquakes ranging in size (on the Richter scale) from 1.0 to 7.2 (X on this scale) quite close to the epicenter and can say this is quite realistic. Although the electric would go out above a 6.2
Wow I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and it’s very good!

thank you for putting the EAS alert sound in the background while the earthquake was happening. It made it so realistic! I love your videos!
Thank you so much friend!!
Great job on the simulation of the effects of different levels of earthquake shaking. I assume that you are simulating the largest part of the shaking that occurs during the surface wave arrival.
That was really interesting. Nice job ^-^
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, the big screen didn't fall. Looks as if getting under the desks wouldn't provide adequate protection. Guess running outside would be better, unless part of a building got you or you fell in a fissure. Thank you, my friend, the 100 hours spent in creating this was worth it. Great work, EqS.
Mike!!! :D Getting under the desk would provide protection only for lower shaking intensities :) and thanks for calling me EqS! I realized it's nice than EQS all caps haha :) I'm wondering what cats would do to defend themselves in a quake other than running :)
@@EarthquakeSim They usually hide, under substantial chairs, beds or in dark spaces (closets if they can find a way in), as mine did every time that there was a bad storm or even if anyone came to visit.
What about a magnitude 9 what intensity would that be
@@TSAMMariolover5554 a magnitude is not directly proportional to the intensity felt. For example the 2011 Japan quake, a 9.0 only had a maximum intensity of IX. Whereas the 6.9 Kobe quake had an intensity of XII
There’s no time to run outside , and if you try you’ll be thrown around like the furniture and building. Duck, cover and pray! During the 7.0 or 7.2 in San Diego on Easter 2010 (estimated year) my cat ran crazy jumping off walls and flying across the room, she just lost it, like I almost did.
I remember the Loma Prieta quake which was a 6.9 Richter scale. I was 6 at the time and remember my mom was cooking spaghetti when it hit. The pot of boiling water flew off the stove. Luckily she wasnt hurt. When it was over everyone in our complex was outside and checking for gas leaks and damage. I remember seeing cracks up the side of the buildings but fortunately that was the worst of it for us.
Having the Richter scale really helps
This is both amazing yet terrifying!!!

As a intensity 1 survivor why are you showed is actually true I actually noticed it
Story: I don’t really remember, but my brother remembers in the year 2019 I was a little kid and my twin brother was in my room. It was exactly 1:05 pm the earthquake happened I actually noticed it same as my brother
We actually noticed it by an empty bottle and my desk
And my slippers
These things shake and what what are little kids brain did we were confused thing we know 10 seconds into the earthquake small things start to move and we starting to panic we screamed our parents came in didn’t notice it but then the earthquake stopped at an around 20 seconds
And that’s how much I remembered
😅

Can you do a simulation of building type or materials base on sturdiness by intensity
For example masonry building
reinfroced concrete
brick walled building
and buildings with steel beams 😊
that is definitely on my list!
@@EarthquakeSim Also the difference between seismic bracing and steel beams.
Happy birthday EQS 🎉🎉
@EarthquakeSim: I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. However, judging from some cam footage I observed of the M7.4 Taiwan quake on 04-03-2024, I would venture to guess that most of the shaking intensity generally did not exceed VI on the Mercalli scale. But a M7.4 quake should theoretically equate to X on the Mercalli scale according to your video.
Can you please elaborate on why this may be the case? Is it because the building code / infrastructure for houses and buildings in Taiwan is stronger? What level of infrastructure does the algorithm / modeling in your simulations take into consideration? Outdated ones such as the ones in NYC or modern ones in areas like Japan? I would love to know.
It’s important to notice that magnitude is NOT direct proportional to shaking intensity. For example lower magnitude quakes like the 6.7 Northridge in 1994 generate shaking intensity IX. It really depends how the fault ruptures and your location
The EAS sound sounds like a countdown. This office needs to upgrade their Windows. I like the sound of the people outside. 👍👍👍

@@EarthquakeSim I've made a huge mistake
wow!, total destruction!. i experienced an earthquake, once. i live in north east wales, where earthquakes are very rare, but, one morning, back in the 80s, we did get one, not a very bad one, but it did rock the house a little. i was in bed & i awoke, hearing a rumbley noise outside, & i felt myself being gently rocked from side to side like a baby in a cradle. i remember not being at all frightend & murmering " hmmm, earth tremor, must be subsidence in a mineshaft"(there was a coal mine here, long ago, & the mineshafts run under the village, so i assumed thats what it was). i would have just gone back to sleep, but i heard my mam on the landing exclaiming "oh my god, what the hell was that?!?!?, she sounded frightend, so i got up & went to assure her that i had noticed it as well, & she hadden't been dreaming & it wasen't anything paranormal. we later listend to the radio, & found out it had been felt all across north wales. people were phoneing in to the show, & describeing their experiences. one man awoke with houseplants, falling on him in bed. someone else said they thought world war 3 had started & that the russians had dropped an atom bomb!. according to seizmic reports, it had started somewhere out in the irish sea.
Japan is experiencing magnitude 1 too 7.8

I was taught if I was ever stuck in an earthquake and I’m inside, dive under a table. I can see why in this simulation with the desks! Damn
I'm glad that you have noticed that in this simulation!
I’ve been in three 6-7+ magnitude earthquakes (Orange County and San Diego). It would be ideal to go outside, however, and a big however is that you don’t have the time and even if you did, you would trip, fall or be hit by flying debris before you made it there. Hopefully early warning system will improve this. Just remember there are dangers outside as well (especially driving cars).
What's the full notes played during the earthquake? The words being played in the office?

How do you make it shake? Do you manually move them?
The power would never stay up in grade X - or even in grade IX already - let alone in upper grades. Grade IX (if not VIII) would already be enough to seriously damage the electric wiring system, so from there and up lights are bound to go dark and stay so for good (at least based on the recordings of real earthquakes I’ve seen).
Well at least nothing broke!
Hence the fact it's animated.
Haha
High quality work just got linked via GeologyHub's videos as I have been catching up from my eclipse vacation.
However I am disappointment to see the misuse of the now defunct "Richter scale" since that scale which was only ever applicable to certain sections of southern California and was thus retired from use in the 1970's when it was replaced by the more generalizable Moment Magnitude scale.
Any "Richter" scale magnitude from the last ~50 years is mislabeled and really is a Moment Magnitude scale measurement. It is bewildering that the name of a dead scale of scientific history is still being thrown around in the public sphere around a half century after its retirement to a dust bin.
Yep! I can’t believe I have made that mistake especially that I’ve always been aware that only the Mw scale is used today. 😀 thank you for watching my simulation!
