  • I hope you enjoy a compilation of the initial trimming flights of my 40” DH Mosquito. With the help of my great friend Ivan Taylor, we made some excellent progress in the couple of hours we had this evening.
We started off getting the glide right, then moved on to adding some turns. Starting off with 200 and finished off the evening on 350 turns. Initial climb is indicating more down thrust is required, so I will be making some more shims to increase this.
The Mosquito is showing some very good potential and we have learned a lot. It has also highlighted a few areas that require some minor alteration, but nothing that requires surgery.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening with my mate, Ivan.

Wow that's looking really promising Mark. It's really good to watch Ivan going through the trimming process and see the steady progression he makes. Great video

Thanks Chris. Yes I think it’s safe to say, he knows what he’s doing when it comes to trimming models! We will be going back to the glide setting before we do anymore flights under power on the next trimming session.

Hi, this was with the last flight having just 350 turns. A motor was tested after the session and blew at 900. We will continue with this size motor and see if we have enough power. After many small adjustments it seems we are on the right track and it should fly really well. All credit to Mark for a lovely build.

It was a great trimming session, and I’ve learned a lot, so all credit to you mate. Looking forward to the next one now!

Very promising. The cuckoo thought so too.

Hahaha! There was actually 2 cuckoos that were sounding off throughout the session we had. I hope they were learning as much as I was!

That last flight was beginning to look good and by the time its fully trimmed it will fly well and it looks very good in flight.

Small adjustments and understanding what those adjustments need to be, will make all the difference Dad. Hopefully you can come to one of the trimming sessions with me and Ivan. 👍🏻

@@michaelmayfield2095 Well i can’t see that being an issue - weather permitting obviously!

Thanks. It doesn’t look quite so nice anymore as it had a bit of an accident when we were out trimming. But, I’ve done the repairs now and it just needs covering.
But I can confirm, it certainly did look good when it was flying a bit higher!

Impressive Model. Very reminiscent of a Howard Boys design. Seems more stable flying left. i take it they are counter rotating props and you adjust turn on the rudder rather than wing tip washin. Like you I returned to free flight after a 40 year hiatus. It’s a rewarding pastime as you have shown. Chapeau!

Thank you! The model itself is the Howard Boys design, but there were changes made throughout the build to improve the flying ability - the wing ribs for example were modified, the rear tailplane design was altered for increased stiffness etc. Yes the propellers are counter rotating. This is so the torque of the rubber motors counteract each other, and it helps the model to keep stable in the air as a result.
Unfortunately there is a weight bias on the right, so the model was laterally unstable causing the turn to the right, this was counteracted with 2g of lead on the wingtip to balance the glide. The left turn is done using side thrust. I made some tapered shims that can be turned to adjust downthrust and side thrust at the same time, but as you increase one, you decrease the other.
For trimming session 2, I made new tapered shims as we didn’t have enough downthrust and the model flies much better - just needed more power. Trimming session number 2 was cut short though when the motor burst at 700 turns, so repairs were required. This has all been done now - just awaiting the aero modelling weather gods to permit more trimming!
Yes I really have enjoyed returning back to aeromodelling. It is as you say, very rewarding!

Well you did better than me! This model had been in build since covid struck (2020), so to finally see it take to the air was nerve wracking, but exciting all at the same time!

Did you paint it? Great job, looks too pretty to fly! Cheers from Normandy.

Yeah i painted it with my airbrush using Vallejo model air paints. It’s not looking quite so pretty now after an unfortunate coming together with the ground, but these things happen! Thanks for the kind words though 👍🏻

It’s not a kit mate. It’s the Howard Boys plan that can be found on outerzone.
