First, my condolences on the loss of your Jenna's grandfather. I know how much family means to you all. May he rest in peace. I find it amazing how calm you can be when faced with a tough situation on a job, especially when it comes as a complete surprise. But even with that, you took the time to help out a neighbor with his lot clearing issue. You guys can be proud of what you do and how you treat people.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. Condolences to Jenna and your family. The beginning of the video had me flashing back to several Cole the Cornstar videos, if you didn’t know besides farming they are also the local area grave diggers. They use some steel rods driven into the ground to locate edges of the neighbors and have to be very careful watching for sidewall collapse similar to what happened to your first site. Unfortunately for them they don’t have the option to relocate to a different site. Thanks for helping out the local community the way you do, trying to leave situations better than you find them. Not enough of that left in this world these days. Made me laugh as you were packing the dumpster tighter and adding more to it just as the driver got there. Wishing you and your family the best.

Put rock on the bottom. About 3 foot. That is what we do when we have this problem. You don't have to cover the whole bottom. But about 12 feet from that wall or what it takes to ser up your basement wall.over. Pack it in with a tamper then put a cover over it and
then clay dirt to with in
16 inches of top. From rock over try to use clay
    from a hillside.
But just try to help. Of course rock on bottom.

Here in Flanders (Belgium) that is never possible, digging such a deep hole without damper plates and dry suction. This always collapses, even if the soil has not been disturbed by previous excavation work. And certainly not done if it is so close to a house.

Been there! Just recently did the site work for a 12’-8” basement dig under a garage with elevated slab on a tight site. Geotechnical report said class A hard pan clay, which it was but it sheared off at seams. Was a couple of nerve racking days and required the rental of a long reach to clean it up. Sorry to hear about your loss. Keep up the good work!

A company I worked for built a gas station in North Syracuse NY. The whole area is ancient river bed . I'm guessing the area was once vast swamps that man drained and built on.. It's mostly sand. When you dig down you hit an almost quick sand . When they were digging the tank area the hole kept on enlarging itself. My boss told the excavator operator that the ground was going to give out under him. He ignored the warning and found himself 15 to 20 down in the hole. It took another excavator and two ten wheeled dumb trucks to pull him out. It was a corner lot and it was tight. Right next to the lot was a piano store. The hole in good soil would have been probably 30 feet from the building. That didn't happen. The ground kept caving in. The top four feet was pretty solid but the muck below that was on the move. The next morning found the building next door sagging several inches. The building was on a four foot frost wall and the moving muck undermined the footer and caused the frost wall to sag. The building was brick and that sagged with it . Insurance paid for repairs. I don't recall if they brought in good solid fill to back the wall up but, the middle section of brick had to be taken down and redone as well as raising the wall and roof. Because of the conditions in the tank hole we had to pour a two foot thick pad the size of the hole so the tanks could be strapped down so they wouldn't float up

Mike, I was really so distracted and yes hungered by that breakfast sandwich I could have gotten on a plane and come there just to take a bite of it. LOL. What a day of surprises when you dig in the ground whether man made fill or natural topography. Adapt, adjust, be flexible and move forward. Great job, Mike, Aaron and Crash. You made it quite interesting and fun. In the end, someone will be happy and safe with a home built on a firm foundation.

Great learning video here. Test holes. We dig test holes for ponds and septic systems. Why not for basements. Great video.

I dont think a test hole would have helped, would it, because the sample size would have been too small. It wasnt a problem until more dirt was dug out.
