    One of my players needed healing potions as a prop for her character in our D&D game. Sure, anyone can just roll dice when they "drink" a healing potion. But this project is SO SIMPLE, there is no reason not to whip a few of these up to spice your table up a bit!

    My local Dollar Tree often sells really tiny glass bottles in the craft section, even smaller than this. I also know my local games store sells really tiny d6s, like a couple millimeters cubed. So you could go _really_ small with this project, if you wanted. You'd probably need a pipette or the like, to put the epoxy in the bottle through such a small opening.

    I do love this idea. However, I think what I will do is leave the dice in the potion bottle, you just shake it up and pop it down on the table, the dice inside revealing how much you got healed!

    I made these healing potions about a week ago. I wasn't expecting the epoxy to get as hot as it did. For my own sanity I needed to put the vials in a bigger container during the curing process incase the glass broke.

    When working with epoxy resins, it's a thermosetting polymer, so it WILL get hot while it's curing. Because of this, please be VERY careful when putting in glass. Examine your glass for cracks or any sort of weakness, because it CAN burst on you. That's not saying it definitely will, but it very much can. You can add things like mica powder to it if you want to give it a little shimmer!
    If you don't want to bother with resin because the risk of bursting glass, you can make really pretty dice rollers instead with a salt water mixture (it may take a LOT of salt, but just keep adding til your dice starts to float in the water) and any dye or pigments you want to add to it. Seal the cork tight (wax is great!) and then your players can roll it and not take the dice out of it. Just turn it upside down like an 8 ball!

    You could put some labels on the viles like handwritten labels that were put on by whomever made the potion in the store.Of course if you are making them yourself in a game like a Ranger or Wizard you will already know what they are.

      "Wicked" when used alone, means awesome.
      When used with other words (wicked awesome, wicked hot, wicked stupid) it means extremely.
      Having grown up right outside of Boston, I heard and used it every day of life.
      It's not used much outside of New England in this manner and even then it's like Massachusetts and the only where the other New England States (Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont) touch Massachusetts.
      Maine is also a part of New England, and originally part of Mass, before becoming it's own State, but they're, now, separated from Mass' border by NH and don't really use wicked in that manner, much.
      Usually if you hear it in NH, VT o Maine, it's people who've left Mass to live somewhere nicer.

    Awesome idea and project!! Love these little vials! 🤩
    I got a little bit concerned though when you said it was wicked hot, because it shouldn't be.. I can't speak for these 5min epoxy, because I haven't used them myself. But I have used resin quite a bit in my days. Resin normally only get crazy warm as a result of being used in a too thick layer (the chemical reaction goes mental), this also causes it to form super many bubbles.. So, yeah, be careful! 😅

    I only just stumbled onto this video, but I had already made something similar. I used the smaller bottles like you have, added the two d4 dice, put the stopper back on, and then I sealed it with a wax seal kit I have. My daughter gave me the idea that all you have to do is shake the bottle and then put it on the table, to get the result.

  • @TheStigma
    @TheStigma Před 7 měsíci

    Resin can be fairly pricey. I think you could probably get a decent looking potion using dirt cheap clear hotglue sticks (typically EVA plastic). You would need a disposable glass jar or metal food can to mix it while hot, but that's easy to get for free. It would be a bit more opaque than most resins, but that might not look bad anyway with a strong color. Not something ive done personally, but worth a try given that it would cut the cost a lot.
    A "glow in the dark" pigment would be ideal for that little extra magical feel either way :)

    • @StorycraftSociety
      @StorycraftSociety  Před 7 měsíci

      It’s an interesting idea. I personally haven’t played with hot glue enough to be able to confirm or deny how that would work. But I’m also wondering if instead of trying to mix it and then add to the jar, if you could maybe cut the glue into small pieces, put a few drops of coloring in there, and maybe put it in some shallow simmering water, or one of those double pans you melt chocolate in? Mix it with a little stir stick when it’s all good and melted. I may have to play with this idea. Again, no idea if itll work or not.

    Such a cute idea! May be a silly question, but do you think it'd look good if it were angled when drying, to give it a look of being in motion?

    • @StorycraftSociety
      @StorycraftSociety  Před rokem

      I think it’s all personal preference. The one issue I could see with it is the way I designed these my players can shake them and never have to dump the dice on the table. If you angled the glue you might have issues with cocked dice. However, you could just make it so they have to dump the dice on the table every time.

    I tried eye-balling the apoxy like you did but it just isn't getting hard...a couple of the batches I did hardened, but the rest didn't get past just being sticky. I'm thinking I'll try measuring cups or something to make sure I'm getting a 50/50 mix

    • @ChristopherDunkle
      @ChristopherDunkle Před 7 měsíci

      A hack for getting equal amounts. Take a clear plastic cup and fill it with water to what you feel is the right amount. Mark that line. Dump out the water, and dry the inside of the cup. Then you can take another cup and put it inside the first. Fill that one to the line with hardener. Then do the same with another cup with the resin. In this way both should be equal, and you aren't going through lots of measuring cups. Your first cup will be your standard.
      Second piece of advice is to make sure that you mix the two parts thoroughly. If they are not mixed enough, they won't cure properly. I found this out from a video on a terrain making. The guy was making a water feature, and did not want any bubbles in it, so he was very gentle when mixing the two parts. While he managed to avoid bubbles for the most part the epoxy hardened, but stayed tacky. He eventually put something on it to seal it, but I don't remember what.

    • @kay-zed4407
      @kay-zed4407 Před 2 lety +2

      No a pressure cooker would not work. You would need to put the vial under vacuum to pull the bubbles out. You can buy a cheap hand operated vacuum pump from harbor freight and or Amazon for around $20-$40. If you are wanting to make a lot of them I would recommend it. As for how to make it work. A lot of hardware stores have isles of drawers of nuts, bolts, screws, and odds n ends. I don't think I've seen one that didn't have black rubber stoppers. Or pick up a universal 3-pack of sink drain plugs from Walmart. Use the hole or make one in the plug and apply vacuum right after you pour so the epoxy is still fluid and warm.

    5 Minute Epoxy is a misleading name. The cure time for 5 Minute Epoxy is about 30 minutes (depending on how warm it is). It is named 5 minute Epoxy because you have 5 minutes to work with it. Basically the company that made the epoxy "promises" that you can use it well within these 5 Minutes. The same goes for most other glues. I have a "30 second glue" that takes about 10 minutes to fully dry (depending on how thick it is) and over here we call super glue "1 second glue" which also takes more than one second to dry.
