My husband made this today and it works awesome! Just hot glued a thin piece of plexiglass on top that he had leftover from another project. It makes the quilt slide around easy. Thank you so much for this!!👍❤️
I couldn’t find an extension table for my 930 bernina and I knew there must be way,to make one but I had no,idea how! Thanks soo very much for this tutorial and off to the Dollar Store,we go! Cheers and happy sewing!
Interesting idea; I'd never thought about making something to raise the area around my sewing machine. BUT I think I'll try something similar with a similarly-sized cardboard box, making cutouts as needed and using pieces of packing styrofoam or foam pool noodle for internal structure. That would entail much less cutting/glueing of small pieces of foam board! I won't even have to spend ANY money 'cause I already have that stuff sitting around.
I'd bought two of those thick insulation foam sheets that modelers use to make things...I think a sheet of that would be great to use as they are already thick, and if not quite thick enough you could cut out feet to make the height..as I haven't gotten around to modeling, and likely won't, perhaps making a platform like this would be more handy...besides, here in Australia, those thin boards are around the $10 AUD mark..
I might add extra stacks of foam board in the middle of front side for added support. Just incase I place my arms down to rest, or push down on top edges too.much or hard. Great idea and very reasonably priced. Thanks for sharing.
I was thinking about that too. I may use more full - sized pieces of the foam and use the pieces I cut out on anotherproject - IE: inner liner for a fabric sewing basket. it would cost more to make the table that way, but, it would be nice 'n' sturdy, I think. (?)
This is a very innovative way to overcome the problem. Cardboard is a good option, recyclable too and best of all, free! Cats love cardboard boxes too so, one for you and one for your beautiful cat.

Thanks for posting this. I haven't really begun sewing or quilting yet, but I used the cardboard box from my newly purchased Singer Sewing machine and the white packing Styrofoam from the machine as the filling. I used a box cutter for the and a straight edge for the cardboard and a serrated knife for the Styrofoam. A little messy from the Styrofoam, but can easily vacuum up. And the shiny outside of the sewing machine box that I used for the top should be slippery enough. It doesn't look very pretty, but it should work as you suggested.
Gr8 video , I was lured in with the Duct tape. Think I'll give this a go but I shall want to try and make a draw in the front of mine for an extra piece of storage. As a chap , I'm currently procrastinating my second sewing project which is a Red Dwarf Cosplay.

You are a genius! I am sooo going to do this. I just might add a layer of vinyl shelf paper on top to make it extra slippery. This is purfect! Oh, my son loved seeing your cats too.
Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us, I've priced the tables!!$$$ you can set your machine into and extention tables made to fit my machine, $$$ also. I found your video, I had all the dollar Tree material already so I made one. My internet went down, 2 visits from the cable guy, I'm worse off then I was. You would think after being a faithful customer for 25 years they would fix things right!! Because I was going on memory as to what you had done in your video, A few things got change, I made my table bigger by starting the pattern at the end of board, leaving no extra foam board for middle supports. Bad weather prevented me from going after more supplies. So, I used the packing foam I had saved that my sewing machine came packed in. The table is 30" x 20" so I added more supports. I also glued a piece of grid board on the top of the foam board for extra sewing lines. Where you put the pink tape around to enclose the middle, I cut to size a heavy cardboard box, hotglued around for closure, where the machine slides in, I left open so I can use with a different machine. When the weather cleared I went back to the Dollartree for more foam board to make my sister a table, they were sold out!! So was wal-mart!! Again, Thank You!!
Today the missus asked me to build an extension to her sewing machine, due yesterday. I showed her this video and she loves your quick and easy design. Of course I am thinking more elaborate and long term but she keeps talking me out that idea. Thank you!!
I made one from the side panel of a cardboard box by making a paper template of the rectangle shape offa my machine then cutting the rectangle out of the cardboard so it has the top ( minus the rectangle whole and it has all 3 sides to it then taped it to smooth and yeah.. no glue needed and it cost me nothing 👍 the lid of a big box might work too if you match the height to your machine then cut out the shape for the top of it x You could cover it with self adhesive film the decal vinyl roll stuff. Happy crafting x
@@skim44 yeah I’d show you but can’t do pictures on here. It was so easy. Mine was the side of a box but the base or a lid will do if it’s big enough and as tall as the machine to sit flush. If you imagine a large shoe box with the lid removed then flip it over and the top would have your machine shape cut out of it and the front side removed as well so it can slide against your machine but keep all three other sides in place. Tape the edges so they’re not raw. The only other thing to do is trim off the bottom edges to to your machine height. Then cover it with fabric, tape, decal roll that you can use on cabinets or draws lining, I got mine from wilkos or anything else you can fine that would be smooth. It’s really sturdy in the middle and needed no glue. Hope that makes sense.
I had exactly the same idea as I watched the vid, including using shelf liner to cover the box! I already have everything that's needed already, so it won't cost me anything to make, just an hour of my time.
May I make two suggestions two years too late? 1. Use double stick tape to tape the layers together. Then wrap tape around the block. 2. Get some of that shelf grip liner and put it under the machine and the box to stop any vibration.

They also have wire clips (usally at the check-out) that are great for slipping under a pattern piece to hold the fabric is place. Usually don't use them for much else in that the fabric can get caught at the center of the clip. For other clips I found Ikea shower curtain clips or Harbor Frieght had a card of 6 nice clips for $1.99. thanks again
I really loved this idea and I’m going to try it, because sometimes you do want to able to extend your work surface and keep fabric flat. Thanks for that. However, I did find the music very loud. I have a neurological disability that means I find competing sounds very distressing! It’s a right pain because so many good videos like cooking and sewing/craft projects have music playing loudly, while someone’s teaching me . I really wanted to learn this but turned the sound very low. Even so, it leaves me feeling dizzy and stressed. It wears off after twenty minutes so it’s not gonna kill me : ) But just wondered if you’d consider doing your videos without adding music? I read lots of comments elsewhere that people leave, saying they don’t like the music, so I know I’m not the only one. Hope no one is offended that I ask, but when you live alone, it’s nice to watch people do things and get good ideas too. Good work, thanks a lot for the great idea. X
I grew up & learned to sew on my mother's Kenmore in a cabinet, so this new thing (to me) about a portable machine is hard to get used to! My Brother has a "quilting" table that's nowhere big enough so I've been looking at $ewing table$. So I was thrilled to see your solution!!! Does the foam board warp or bow with time?

Add heavy duty vinyl to top to allow fabric to glide easier. You can also use dining table protector vinyl.
