- The Akita is one of the world's most revered canines, originating in Akita, Japan from bear hunting dogs. Did you know that there are two different types of Akita? - the larger Akita or American Akita and the more foxy Japanese Akita Inu. Anneka meets them and explains the differences between them both.

I have an akita. We adopted him from Battersea dogs home 5 years ago. 2 years after we got him he saved my life. I had a cardiac arrest in the street while out walking him. He got free of the lead and found someone to help me. The person he found did cpr on me for 29 minutes before the emergency services arrived.
I love Akita

Akita are bred to think independently, and must be raised as a family member, not a pet. This subtle difference brings out their incredible personalities. Positive reinforcement is a must, only gentle, occasional, rebukes when training.
the opening shot of both breeds on either side is an epic image.
I live with a Japanese Akita Inu whose now 11 yrs old. I received him as a gift when I turned 6. For his old age, he is a very hyper dog but for most of his life he’s been a very calm dog minding his own business but alert when strangers are near. His aura is strong and he’s a very emotional dog. One time we left him at home for 2 days but forgot to say goodbye to him ( we always do). We arrived to see him crying and watery eyes. He ignored us for a week. As an only child, I consider him my brother. I apologize if you read this thinking something was going to blow you away, I just felt like sharing my story. If you have any questions about my Akita, feel free to ask.
kuhvn Your JAI sounds amazing. They have such a wonderful character. Unless you’ve shared your life with one it’s quite difficult to put down in words just how unique they are. Thank you for sharing your story. Robert, Flora and Kin.
Beautiful story that shows the depth to these dogs 🐶
Thank You for sharing. I think they are beautiful. And would love to have. One. I have a huge German shepherd that I think has just a bit of akita in him. Closest I could get to true akita. .

My Akita Yoshi was the most loyal animal I've ever come across. He was also incredibly crafty , like , really crafty . He was always thinking . Mostly how to do something he wasn't supposed to be doing , but it was one of his most endearing qualities. Amazing breed of dog . He lived until 17 years old which for a large breed is quite long . I miss him everday .
They're the best dogs ever 😥❤
We got our boy Kuma when I was 7, and he passed away right after my 20th bday. I was absolutely heartbroken, I still cry when I look through pics of him.
I just adopted a 2 year old Akita, Logan, last October, and I forgot just how special these dogs really are. They're so loyal & dignified, yet super fun & goofy. Just such an amazing breed.
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you had 17 years with your Yoshi.

Shiba Inu pictures were shown twice as Akita. They kind of look alike, but just notice that the Akitas don't have the red colour going all the way down to their nose, whereas Shibas do.
Very astute observation. People try to pass the puppies off as the same sometimes. You're amazing.
Very true .. you're right
Shibas are wayyyy smaller
@@BeeBeefy those are made shibas, original shibas are big like akitas
@Doris Karloff the "original" shivas are as big as akitas and they look very similiar but if you look closely their build and face are slightly different
Red white was Akita, the dark one was American Akita.
@Calpurnia L shiba is not akita. Different breed.
Yes! The Akitas come in three colors, red, white, and brindle. The American Akitas can come in any color and most of the times have a black mask on their face.
The Danger Zone , Hi, in the UK where I live and filmed this the two breeds as prescribed by our Kennel Club is:

I had a Japanese Akita, my best friend he died in January and our family can’t cope. Now this is in my recommended
So sad to hear you lost your dog, our boy is 12 and getting grey and a bit of arthritis but still active.
We had him as a rescue from age 7, will be devastated when he goes but you have to think of the wonderful life you gave them and the joy they brought you.
jaee Juliet how are you doing now? i lost mine three days ago, and I never thought anything could make me hurt this much. I'm done crying over him, but there is a feeling of emptyness that feels physical, like there is something missing that won't go away. He was the one thing that kept everyone in my family tied together. With him gone the house feels empty, and its strange how little I care about anything right now.
I've had Akita since he was 8 months old...he had basic command training, and some tactical training...but the one thing that he does that is worth more than all that training put together is alert me to when i am about to have seizures...he was never trained for it. He is my world and I thank God he was put in my life!

Whenever I threw a ball for the Akita that deemed me worthy of being his human, he would do one of two things. Either follow the ball and take it somewhere or give me a look that said "Fetch? What do you mean fetch? You threw it away, if you want it, you go and get it". I loved him so much, he was my best friend. I have his ashes in an urn by the front door where he spent most of his time. He was a smokey grey and his name was Marshall, but he used to get Moo.

I love my American Akita. She is gentle, well mannered, show some much love and intelligent
@Jaime Alonzo I don't think they specify the exact origin of the American Akita. Not that I know of at least.
Careful calling it that. Apparently it’s racist to refer to your dog as it’s proper breed
Is yours aggressive? I really want an Akita but, I do genuinely worry about their protective nature. I know it all depends on how a dog is trained but, dogs can have some predispositions.
Mars S she is the loveliest dog you will ever meet. She gets on with any dog and has pass as a guard dog. It’s how you socialise them, training and being firm with them from a puppy. They are great dogs. You can watch her videos as prove. This was open to show that Akita’s are lovely dogs.
@@Khenfu_Cake no they don't they are called only American Akita.
The Akita Inu is gorgeous! So much smaller than the American Akita and more fox-like, like the Shiba Inu.
the face is more fox - but the body is more wolf
I did some research on bite force and how is it that the Japanese breed of Akita Inu has up to 450 PSI in bite force and the American Akita which is Inu breed mixed with more powerful dogs like Mastiff, German Shepherd etc only ended with a bite force of about 250 PSI pretty much the same as pit bull which it suprises me that even pit bulls have such a weak PSI when it comes to bite force
@J Thorsson if I can find it again I will send it somehow. It was about a month ago when I did the research and it was just research on Google that I did. I just happened to memorize the info.
@J Thorsson no domestic dog is close to wolf bit force. wolves get up to 1100 pounds per square inch. they have to crack the bones of moose and buffalo.. it's not even close.
@@NeverGiveUp-yt5nl yeah bit force is not always straightforward. most people won't believe it - but a hyena has a stronger bite force than a lion. even among cats - jaguars have stronger bit force than lions... but overall lions are stronger than both.

Akitas are without a doubt my favorite breed. I have owned 2 in the last twenty years. They are a large breed with a longer than average lifespan. My first Akita was 12 when he passed. It took me almost 5 years to get another. She is currently 2, and is the most protective dog I have ever owned. She will not let strangers, even family friends, near my kids. If she doesn't know you, my kids are off limits. While it can be a bit of a pain, I wouldn't have it any other way.
I have two Akitas and they’re absolutely brilliant and wonderful dogs! Prior to Akitas, I was a long time German Shepherd owner and trainer. So it did take me some getting used to their independent nature. But once you understand and gain their loyalty, they’re the best! Especially, if you’re like me that prefers a dog that does not yearn for your attention 24/7 . Great video! Thank you!
I’ve always loved the Akita Inu. I had no idea there’s an American version! One thing he didn’t mention is that Akitas are very adept escape artists & not inclined to return home due to their independence. 2 neighbors down from us have a beautiful Akita Inu who escapes his 7-8ft fence whenever he decides that’s what’s on his to do list for a particular day. He’s quite jovial, (at least he’s always been w/us), so we’ve been fortunate that at least one of us has been outside at the same time he is every time he’s escaped, able to return him safely home while he’s enjoying our affection. You can see the mischievous intelligence in his eyes. Absolutely fabulous, stunning dog. We’re happy to have him for a neighbor 😊.
Nia Lin Due to time restraints it wasn’t possible to cover everything. You certainly are right that they can be regular Houdinis.
We had one that liked to get into the neighbor's fenced in yard and escape, but we didn't know how she was doing it. So I followed her and discover a lose board on the privacy fence to the next door yard, she then climbed onto the above ground pool deck where an aluminum ladder was leaning against the 4ft cyclone fence, she stepped onto the ladder then shimmied and shuffled down and went on her way. We didn't know how long she had been using this route because she could let herself back into our yard when she decided to come home, come to find out she had frustrated the local dog catcher several times by letting herself back into our yard he couldn't get her. Lol.
You hit it on head . They are true escape artist
No shit, my brothers is a little Houdini. Sorry a large fat Houdini
Wait til you see honey badgers, they're the true escape artists. They're cleverer (or the same) as monkeys!
My first dog was an Akita, who lost two yeas ago. Absolutely loved cats, in a good way, the neighbours cat used to jump the fence, wander in and say hello to him, that's when he (the cat) wasn't snuggling up to him when he was on his bed, he would also come a walk with us now and again, closing in for protection from any other dogs that were around.
Took him in, as the breeder didn't want him and he didn't have a home to go to. Was warned about not letting males mix, his best mate was another male Akita (not related to him), another neighbours dog, would bare teeth at him, he would just stand there as if to say you don't bother me.

I'm commenting from Akita prefecture.
I still think about the last scene of Hachi; A Dogs Tale every day.
Our first dog was an Akita. After she passed at the age of 13, we downsized to a Shiba. Great dogs both!
i had 2 male akitas and they were like two peas in a pod. they treated each other like family and never fought with each other they were EXTREMELY protective over me and my brothers too sadly once one of them passed away it set the other one into a VARY deep depression (he refused to walk or eat and just layed around waiting for his bother to come back and our family couldn't take seeing him like that.. the vets suggested we put him down cuzz it seemed like nothing would bring him back to his uslua;; self and we ended up bringing him to the vet to put him to sleep.. i miss them so much... i absolutely love this breed and hopefully i can get another one later in life
My absolute favorite breed. I have always wanted an Akita.
We found an Akita puppy in our yard and could not find where it came from, but we also did not know for at least a year what the breed was, then finally did a little research. She was the most beautiful dog you have ever seen, intelligent, loyal affectionate, easy going. She stayed in the house with the family until she was full grown, then she decided she wanted to stay outside. She began hunting small animals that came into our yard at night, like possums, raccoons and groundhogs, but she especially liked killing skunks. She never hunted or killed cats, which seemed strange to me, but later I discovered the Japanese who originally bred them had them hardwired to guard the farmers crops and that's why she only hunted animals that were harmful to the vegetable crops, even though we didn't have a garden we did have plenty of nighttime visiting varment type animals. She didn't eat them she would kill them, then bring them to the front porch and wait for us to acknowledge her good deed.
Hey! I am glad you found my dog! Please tell me where and when I can pick her up.
I’m so happy to see you spotlight the Akita. I have a male Akita that I adopted. He’s so intelligent, so kind and gentle, and very obedient. Which surprises people everywhere we go. He just has his yearly exam (weighing in at 116lbs) at the vet yesterday and they always tell me how’s he’s just the most obedient dog that comes into the office.
Akita: "I’m the fluffiest and cutest dog ever!!!"
i love looking at Akita and Shiba Inu's faces. They look so smileyyy
Beautiful dogs. Loved hearing about how she spots a seizure, that’s amazing.
Yes God gave dog as a help to man... I knew someone who had a little toy dog that detected when there cancer return... It would go to that part of the body and moan and whine... The owner knew... Sadly the disease took their life - but it was amazing still. As to the seizures - I've heard that of several breeds.

Akita: "I am independent."
Also Akita: waited 9 years by a train station for his master.
Loyalty and independence are two different things. You can be an independent person and still be loyal to your friend. Same can be said for these dogs.
he was independent. The Prof's family tried to bring Hachiko back. But Hachi would always free himself and come to the station
Hachiko was loyal because he respected his master. Weak owners will get no respect from an akita.
Listen, guys, I hear what ya saying. Believe me, I like dogs. I like them alot more than I like cats for dang sure. But here's a brief list of examples of stuff that wouldn't wait by a train station for 9 years:
- A cat.
- Your ex.
- The most stalkerishly stalker in the world.
I'm just giving tough love. If your boy's girl breaks up with your boy, and your boy is hung up on it for 9 years, that's not something to be praised as loyalty. That's just messed up. The proper friend advice would be to move him forward, because there's something wrong there.
As for this particular story, seeing as it's Japan and its history of the way they treat women, who the heck knows what it's really about. It might be a veiled lesson to wives to stay faithful and true and grieve their husbands forever no matter how long after the husbands have passed away.
Ultimate yanderes!

msss Davv I do not have kids, my female wasn’t raised around them and hates them. My male was raised around kids and loves them. It’s all about puppyhood and the exposure I believe.
@msss Davv we had an Akita from an 8 week old puppy and as you know instinctually they are pack animals that are structured as highly social family oriented loyal to the pack. We had four kids and could not have asked for a better member of our family than her.
msss Davv 12 years will be fine, when the dog becomes mature your child will be 14-15. With kids preferably choose a female. Male’s can be dominant/protective towards strange kids coming to your house.

Rika G I don’t think many people realise “inu” translates to dog in Japanese, yet they insist on saying Japanese Akita inu.. just as annoying as recalling the American Akita as the Akita lol, I have one myself btw but the original Akita is definitely the Japanese.
What if you don't speak Japanese ?
Bill W nor do I, but I like to educate myself, so I researched what it meant before I owned my first one. Even dogs I’m not interested in buying I research. Suppose most people are just too ignorant.
I thought the same thing... It originated in Japan - so the American one needs the additional label
Thank you! God... I was looking for this comment. Akita was first then American Akita, because the original what she calls japanese Akita is actually over 4,000 years old breed. It has been in japan for a really long time. American Akita was bred from Akita and german shepherd to get the American Akita. I personally prefer the original Akita over the American one, but that is just me.

I would love to see the Alabai or CAO they used to be called the Pyrenean mountain dog but that's an incorrect name due to natives saying that version of the breed is not pure bred and a mixture of other breeds. So please do a video on the Alabai.
My sister's ex lived in the Rocky Mountains. One day he got stuck in Denver due to a blizzard (if you don't know Colorado weather there's a saying that explains it - if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes). He was so worried about his Akita (named Bear; it was the brindled type) because he always left the dog out for the day. When he was able to get back home the first thing he did was call for Bear. After a few minutes he saw a huge mound of snow (where the dog house is) rumble and shake, and lo and behold, Bear burst out of the mound running towards him. Not even phased.
We recently lost our two elderly German Shepherds, they passed away within a few months of each other. During this time of mourning their loss, we have been researching canine breeds to help us select our next dogs. Your videos have been invaluable in assisting us with this important decision. I have two Akita, they are the best spoiled babies bringers of happiness.
I adore them dearly
I grew up in a house that led onto this cemetery, talk about a blast from the past. Must be 35 years since i last walked through the place.
I've been around Akitas (both Akita Inu and American Akita) most of my life. When I was in middle school we had a 110-120lb male American Akita named Jack. My family lived in a rural area near a small town, with lots of open fields, forests, hills, etc.. I used to take Jack miles from home and just explore. My parents never worried about my safety because they knew I had the ultimate protector with me.
I knew an Akita. He would burp after drinking and honestly he feels like the kind of dog that would watch a sports game and gets mad at the ref for a bad call. Also he would give me grilling advice.
We've had Akitas for years, they are very loyal and comforting to have around. One thing we've found is they'd rather be laid out on cool concrete or snow than in a centrally heated house, they do not like the heat and with that thick coat you can see why. A hot Akita can be a cranky beast and best avoided.
Were do you live? We are in Cyprus and we have hot summers. We walk very early in the morning and very late in the afternoon in the woods. We avoid asphalt as it is hot. Aimi and Bakudai, the Akitas, spend the day in the house, laying on the marbles under the air condition :)
Omg .. at the beginning , I thought they were statues

Fun fact : Doge is a Shiba Inu, not an Akita.

Meh Meh doges are shiba inus and not akitas but look similar
I think he made this on purpose, so we can get mad and comment about how dumb he is
@@griffin6718 Fun fact all japanese spitz come from the shiba... I feel bad for the shiba that gave birth to a giant ass puppy that would eventually become the akita
Calling the mix breed as “Akita” and the Japanese one as “Japanese Akita” is so wrong.. like wtf
It's because the Americans are the ones who named the more powerful dog Akita.
The Japanese called them Dog.
So basically whoever named them first got to keep the name.
Adam O Ammm... Akita has been called Akita inu (or Akita matagi) for over 400 years in Japan.
And “powerful”? What does that have to do with the origin of a breed name?
@Eddy Juana lol white people? Are you American? In Germany the Japanese Akita is called "Akita" or "Akita Inu" and the American is called "American Akita". It's an American thing... like your "white people" obsession.
You know what really is wrong? Inbreeding dogs just so they look a certain way.
@Eddy Juana lolol I love how you put american first when they are english
My Akita GSD mix is the smartest and most loving service dog ever. He was a rescue at 5yrs. It is possible, but this is not my first or 10th dog. I've been diagnosed with cptsd and my Akita mix is flawless for stopping panic attacks, self harm, rage outs, dissociation, ECT. Hope it helps 😊
Amazing.. Thankyou for sharing 🙏🐶
My Wild Freedom Wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
These two dogs are so Gorgeous, and i really like the dark-brown/coffee bean colored one, he's so cute and adorable 👍
Triztan 369 Thank you very much.
I have a Japanese Akita, she’s big, fluffy and white. We love her.
And is she easy to train and is she friendly to visiters
Best dog I've ever had, and it's not even close. Not for everyone, not for every living situation but if you click with an Akita the bond goes far beyond anything you have ever had with a dog before.
When ever i see or think about akitas i think of hachi
Me too. I only watched that movie once. Never again. I was reduced to a crying mess when I saw it, i felt broken. Lol.
@@tineegonzales7365 i felt sad to thats why i dont watch the movie either lol

My cousins had an Akita. It would walk beside my younger cousins and siblings when they were learning to walk. It was fiercely protective of us as kids. Someone broke into the house once, and she bit his leg clean off.
Why do you call the mixed-breed Akita an Akita and the pure blood Akita a Japanese Akita? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?
Pande Sal I Was thinking the same
Hehe pure blood harry potter I'm sorry.
There are a lot of different names for these breeds. like for example i live in the Netherlands and we call the mixed type the American Akita and the red white one the Akita. other countrys even put the word inu in the breed name which means dog. What i think is actually pretty dumb because you say basically dog twice in a sentence when you talk about them.
The Akita is mixed not so The Japanese Akita Inu. Got a problem with that take it up with Japan.
No such thing as a pure bred dog they all started as wolves and those are different types.
Is that HACHIKO?! 😍Omg
American Akita “tough intimidating dominant” japan Akita “doge went to the gym”
My dog is an Akita. He's very independent, but I wouldn't call him aloof. He is pretty intimidating and gives off an air of "I'm better than you", but he is very loyal and loving with me. He even gets pretty jealous if I play with another dog, which is always adorable.
The first background music is a low key version of Japan's national anthem
"Kimi Ga Yo" which is just incredible.
It's interesting that Akita, have a reputation for being aloof, our boy loves people and most I've met are pretty friendly too.
They are great dogs stubborn af though lol.
I so thrilled you did Akita!! The knowledge in this video was fantastic. I own an Akita (American) and I absolutely love this breed. Not for the faint of heart, but the most amazing companion.
You are welcome 👍❤️
Why not for the faint of heart ? I keep hearing things like that and I'm curious why ?
Midas Akita’s are notoriously stubborn. If an owner is not “firm” (not aggressive) they WILL over take you and do as they please. As a very high prey drive/strong/guarding dog, you do not want them to just be running with out proper training and socializing.
@@user1ofuser2 thanks for the reply, that's very interesting! so aggressive is what an owner is aspiring towards if they want to have an Akita as a companion ? (I know you don't mean aggressive in a negative sense, well I assume). Could you give abit of clarity? Do you mean commitment to training and consistency, or do you mean firm in the way you do training and interact with him/her?
I've had a lot of Akitas and akita mixes. They are definitely my favorite breed. If you know what you're doing and train them from puppyhood, they will almost never give you problems. Three of mine were absolute nanny dogs too. I currently have a male that won't leave the baby's side for anything! Such sweet guardians. ♡♡♡
This is without a doubt the most informative coverage I've seen about the American and Japanese akitas! Kudos for posting!
Fantastic work again. Been looking forward to you doing an Akita episode.
I didn’t even know there were bears in Japan
I love seeing the Japanese and American Akita side by side
They are one of my favorite dogs. lovely and smart
It took me 8 minutes to realize she was saying "inu". I was confused as hell as to why she was saying "Akita in you"... If you don't know how to pronounce the word inu (or any other foreign word for that matter), type in the word on Google Translate and click that little play button.
Ya I was also wondering why she was pronouncing inu that way...
joededimanadedi it might just be because she has that accent. Not because she doesn’t know how to say it or that she was purposely saying it like that
Watch a japanese documentary and enjoy their perfect pronounciation
Joe assumes she was aware that she didn't know how to pronounce inu and was too lazy to look it up.
I can't unhear this now
Thank you I've had Akitas all my life, We raised them and would show them..I've raised Akitas with my children, couldn't imagine not having one ..They are also very protective of their human children!!🤗
They are aren't they? 👍
counrty Sears They are such a wonderful (and unique) breed. Like you I can’t image not having one in my life.
We had an Akita for 10 years, she was very loving, and fearless!!
Akita's loyalty is unparalleled "Forever with you, loyal till the end, I am the AKITA"!
Pretty sure I spotted Robert at a dog show down south this year, Only noticed him because of his gorgeous Japanese Akita! I'd love a red Japanese Akita to go with my Husky such gorgeous dogs.
My first dog is a shiba inu. It’s aloof and stubborn. It does not elevated guarding drive or prey drive. He’s actually too friendly to strangers. Lol
I would love to see you cover border collies and Australian sheepdogs, maybe not the most exotic of breeds but true hard working, intelligent and amazing dogs (yup I am a collie dad lol)
This owner is very knowledgeable. He does provide insights and first-hand experience about Akitas that I normally dont know even if i read something about akitas. If only the host explored more on his insights
Thank you very much.
I don’t see why you don’t have over a million subs :/ already. Love your show, brings me peace and harmony Annika ❤️
Childhood memories of watching the manga Silverfang. Basically Akitas fighting off bears.
Wtf hell no
Very regal looking dogs. I learned something new today. Thank You for doing this video.
Edited after watching the full video. Awesome story. Ma'am, you are oh so correct about each dog having their own personality. Having 5 dogs myself...each one has it's separate personality. Also, our 2 cats have their own personality.
and the cats are no doubt the true pack leaders ;)
@@hunniemaxandtheirhumantoo3351 check out the videos I've posted. That tells the real story. Lol
What does regal mean I cba to google
This video is so welcomed to the different Akitas. Great for first time viewers
Wow, they are so beautiful! I just love your show. I love how kind, respectful and welcoming you are with ALL your guests! You are a wonderful, beautiful person and it shows. Thank you for all you do.
I watch every single video from this channel.
Just to watch Anneka, she is a very beautiful and amazing person.
Thankyou 🙏
We have the Akita she loves cuddles and is very affectionate to ppl and other dogs and loves to play, most of what they say about the Akita is true they won’t run after a ball if u throw it they look at you to say “ you threw it you go get it “ but great breed none the less.
She has lots of doggy friends small and large and is a big cuddly bear 🐻
She is so fine first off. Second I think this will be my next breed. Last dog was South African Boerboel
So who are you talking about when you mention your "next breed" haha.
This is the lady who was making out with wolves lol
lucky wolf!
Yeah, her devotion to animals is lovely.
northide Too devoted...

@YouQuo2 I seriously doubt anything bad happened to the wolves. TO me it sounds like y'all just trying to make a big deal out of nothing lol
Just love CZcams's counting. 1 view 8 thumbs up.
Thanks Again for Doing Another Amazing Dog Breed Anneka and Animal Watch Crew :)
i first saw this breed a couple years ago when i saw “Hachiko a dogs tale“ ever since i’ve loved the breed ever since and i want one so bad.
The Akita is one of the best breeds one can have. But you should be aware that you will have to spend time with your Akita for training and socializing! Another thing to have in mind is the correct selection of the breeder.
Woman: Now you're my friends.
American Akita: So, when do we eat the blond woman?
Japanese Akita: shhh Let's wait until she run out of treats.
