Another great video . Yes the minoans were dominat culture in agean sea through there military navy nd trade fleet ... And they influenced other cultures on the Greek Islands ... Now their culture did not collapse . Let me explain : When the vulcano Island of Thera blow around 16-1550 bce and buried the city akrotiri. The vulcanic activity also started seismic activity on the ocean floor. That sent huge tsunamies Down to Crete. It hit the northern part of the Island . Where it caused huge destuction and destroyed settlement and cretan navy and Trade fleet . And the waves continued up cretan rivers. Where they also caused destructions . But they problems were not over yet. Because vulcanic clouds from Thera was sent with winds Down ti crete. And they contained poisoned vulcanic ash. The ash feel on the fields killing the crops(for bronze age culture dependent of farming this was a disaster) , the ash feel on the meadows killing livestock. So that Big uppercut to Crete (famine destruction etc) And so this was not the end of minoan crete. They got back on their feet and continued on for the 90 years. But the golden age was over. Minoan Crete was just secondrate power . And vaccum left by was quikly filled in the mycenean Greek City states from the mainland . The greeks now became dominant culture . And they spread through the agean sea. And many islander on the Greek Islands started ti copy the Greek culture , language and religion ... But Crete did not escape Greek infuence either. Around 1450 bce. Crete was invaded by mainland greeks. And other palaces were plundred and burned down. And Greek mycenean kings ruled from knossos. Linear a writing dissapeared and was replaced by Greek linear B. And the greeks also brought their gods with them . Gods like Zeus , Hera, Athena, Hermes Poseidon etc . The myceneans alteady vorshiped and belived in Thise gods in the bronze age ..., Also the many minoans to copy/emulate Greek culture/language/dress and religion . So minoan Crete was simply absorbed into mycenean Greece. And with the next 200 years minoan culture and language dissapears . But is opened up opotonities for cretans. Minoan Crete was also a place of great art. And many minoan artists had worked as court artisans in great palace cultures in the east. Now many of them found work in courts of the mycenean citystates on the mainland . In Beotia close to the City of Thebes . Traces of cretan settlement had been found. So Its that small comminities of cretan migrated into the Greek mainland to work there So the conquest opened up New possibilities . Before the conquest Minoans and myceneans had been rivals . Now the minoans were part of the Greek World . So some properbly took the chance to get the Best out of it

As a Greek, we learn a shit ton about the Minoans. on top of many legends of ancient greece about king minos, we learn about the minoan lifestyle, their gods, their writing, a lot of stuff.
Recently I've been really interested in the origins of civilization and this shows me my heritage, knowing about the minoans andd recently discovered cycladians.
Also, I am a Greek Cypriot, and we also had contact with the Minoans about 4000 yearss ago. on top of the eteocypriot people and language and writing systems there is the cyprominoan, a writing system very close to Minoan Linear A that also hasn't been deciphered and later on cypriot, a language based off Mycenean Greek, using a writing system close to Linear B

Another hypothesis regarding their origin is that they came from Ancient Egypt, so I read, if I'm not mistaken. A few things.
    1. Have there been archeogenetic studies done on the Minoans? If so, this would go anlong way in clarifying where, and whem, the Minoan peoples originated.
    2. There is currently much evidence that when the palace sites were destroyed. There was an inland movement of the Minoan people's to defensible mountain villages, this seems to correspond to the Sea People's invasions and the Bronze Age collapse, which also corresponds with the end of the late Minoan civilisatiin.
My personal theory is that advances by the Mycenaeans into the Aegean put downward pressure on the Minoan civilisation, such that when the Sea Peoples swept theough, they could not fend them off, and collapsed, leaving room for later generations of Greeks to colonize the island.
I wonder what percentage of Minoan DNA survives in the modern populationnof Crete, since it is unlikely that the peoples dissappeard with their civilisation, but rather those that were left integrated with the Greek colonizers.
Some good possible topics to cover in a future follow up video.

We actually do know what happened to the Minoans. The Santorini Volcanic Megaeruption happened. Those artifacts that have been found were under ash and other heavy debris. That particular volcano was said to be the original home of the oldest "Greecian" forge god. We know for a fact that this eruption was preciptiated by major changes felt as far away as Egypt. That particular volcanic megaerution was heard around the world 3 times over. The Hyksos Exodus is well recorded, and lines up perfectly with what Egyptian tablets declare about the events. We have Volconological evidence that these events were precipatated by the eruption has happened, and is well documented phenomena before it erupts. (Coincidentally, the exact impacts these events would have are recorded in the Hebrew Bible. I know that is controversial, but everything fits perfectly. There is speculation as to the name of the Pharoah in the Yezi'at Mizrayim, it just declares "Pharoah". There is considerable evidence in museums from the Exodus time period that declares the Pharoah to have been "Atemhotep II", including an inscription which shows his chariots being drowned with their riders.)

Rollin Stoned in truth we are not certain.
Notably the top floors of the "palaces" had collapsed. We have mainly the foundations (although they probably built walls that were supported from below).
Maybe they had strong regional rulers or maybe it was a lot more communal.
Interestingly the Spartans and the Cretans both had a common mess, which hints to some type of more communal living. Traditionally the Spartan constitution was influenced by the Cretan one. BUT these are Greek Iron Age civilizations and the Mycenaean Greeks intervened between them and the Minoans. So it's a wild guess.
But there is no kingly iconography. At least not in the same way as in Egypt or Mesopotamia... or even classical Greece. Whatever that means.

I always thought it was because of the combination of the volcano eruption on Thera and the pressure from the Mycenaeans and earthquakes, since Crete is located very earthquake prone. Also wasn't the Minotaur (and his roars) a coping mechanism/tale for King Minos to explain all the earthquakes on Crete?

Good video, but there are a few mistakes:
    1) The Minoans couldn't possibly have taken their script from the Phoenicians. Linear A was developed around 1850 bc and Minoan hieroglyohs around 2000 bc or earlier, whereas the Phoenicians developed their own script, the Phoenician alphabet, around 1050 bc. Plus the Phoenician alphabet is an abjad, whereas the Linear A is a syllabic and logographic script, so completely different from Phoenician, moreover the Phoenicians at the time weren't really the great sailors and explorers that they would become 1000 years later, in fact the earliest Phoenician colonies date to the 9th century bc, not to mention that much of Canaan was under the control of Egypt during the late bronze age, and before that during the Middle Bronze Age Byblos was pretty much under Egyptian control even back then, the Phoenicians didn't have the freedom they would enjoy from 1100 bc to 700 bc and the most important seafaring state in the Levant was Ugarit before that period, not the Phoenicians.
2)The reconstruction you put at 7:37 is that of the Mycenaean megaron in the palace of Pylos, so it isn't not Minoan.

We still don't know for sure. There seems to be a bias in their culture towards woman, meaning they could've been in charge but even that is speculative. They also seemed to have a warrior centric society, that we have evidence for in archeological sites but none of this is depicted in the artwork either.
Either way they were highly advanced given their time period and must've been very successful.

The Minoans worshiped the moon! Structuring the text of the Phaistos disс shows that it was copied by the disс manufacturer, or with inscriptions made in the form of three bilateral axes, or with inscriptions on the very similar axes (labrys) from palace or cave sanctuaries. The text is a list of the dedications of the main rulers of Crete to the moon god. One of these axes, the largest, four-blade, could also be used as a kind of lunar calendar. The disс itself, the moon on the full moon, is a kind of portable version of these initiations. These initiations were made in order to receive the blessing of the god of the moon. It is possible that the number of dedications of each ruler depended on the number of buildings he had (palaces and villas). Hence, and one more destination of the Phaistos disс is a charm in the form of a snake coil (the inscriptions on the disс after all in a spiral) for these buildings and all living in them, tk. The Minoans believed that the serpent in the house brings God's blessing. The Phaistos disс was made before the largest earthquake in 1700 BC. Who destroyed the early palace. Since the disс, as a guard, did not take this palace from destruction, it was later "punished" - disguised as a layer of plaster in the main cell of the building's hiding place. "Watercolor" or "sumi" (ink edges) style... a popular effect in 1999 when everyone was Photoshop crazy. Really blurs out and cheapens it. I haven't watched any of your other vids to know if this is a regular occurrence, but I recommend you skip that in future videos to give them more "authenticity". I think that’s more or less what happened. Plato was not only a gifted philosopher, but also a really good world builder. Atlantis was one example of this, some of his other stories he made to tell his philosophies include the ring of Gyges, a story about a ring that turns its wearer invisible, which discussed the dangerous nature of power. Atlantis was an allegory on greed and imperialism, and how it leads to a society’s downfall. Course his students didn’t understand this and took it literally, this birthing the Atlantis myth.

There is some evidence that the Minoans retreated to remote mountaintop settlements during the bronze age collapse, before returning to farmable land. Mountaintop shrines are part of Minoan religious practices altogether, but these settlements seem to be different. Could be for protection from invaders.
The material culture was gone, but the people were not wiped out. DNA sequencing has shown that samples from modern cretans were not that dissimilar from the DNA obtained from minoan burials.
They were known to exist on Crete by the Greeks... e.g. in the Odyssey, book 19:
"There is a fair and fruitful island in mid-ocean called Crete; it is thickly peopled and there are nine cities in it: the people speak many different languages which overlap one another, for there are Achaeans, brave Eteocretans, Kydonians, Dorians of three-fold race, and noble Pelasgi."
So Homer knew of non-Greek inhabitants of Crete, including Kydonians (Kydonia is a toponym found on Lin A tablets and in classical times the name for modern Chania), Eteocretans - original inhabitants of Crete, and Pelasgoi, which probably refers to many different populations. Possibly one of them might be the people of the cycladic civilisation, but that's contentious, the term Pelasgoi seems to be used inconsistently by ancient authors, to refer to many different non-Greek speaking peoples.

Relying on the principle that no one wants to be first but everyone want to be next, let me ask: What's up with those Minoan dresses? Why does no one comment on the dresses worn by Minoan women? Come on, you know what I'm talking about. I'm pretty caught up on archaeology and I know of no other culture where the women wore such elaborate dresses which don't even show a little ankle and yet were open in the front to where their breasts were not just exposed, but dramatized. I also noticed there are no more mature women in any of these paintings. Could this have been a form of advertising employed by young unmarried women? Maybe they stopped wearing this style once married. After a couple of babies and a few years...well...one might suspect a little support would have been appriciated; and why waste the wall space and perfectly good wet plaster on that?
Where's the academy on this one? Art Department says, "yah," but the anthropologists, not so much. "Ah, we're academics. We do not comment on exposed breasts unless the woman depicted has six of them. Obviously this is a fertility goddess and we move on." But you see, that's just the point. Boobs then, as now, had to mean something other than ready milk dispensers and wearing dresses that had them just hanging out there was far more than the latest Paris influence. (Paris, of Troy, that is, who, according to Homer, was not much of a fighter but was really into female fashion design.).
Since they were otherwise covered from head to foot and lived in a warm climate perhaps they thought boobs were natural radiators of heat. An idea, I am told, catching on with students interesting in natural health alternatives during Spring break in Daytona.
Did it encourage birth rates which was always a front burner consideration of ancient cultures? Did it work; and if so should European societies consider it to address the problem that they are not reproducing to even a replacement rate? I think it's something worth considering and maybe even running a few social experiments with.
Legalizing the public display of boobs might even put a dent in the growing prom industry. I say if it prevents just ONE teenager from getting hooked on internet porn then as a society it is well worth it.
In the Bronze Age people didn't just make fashion statements. Everything was connected and said something about their culture, religion and world view. The "costume" is not only unique but has to be screaming something to us about their culture and consciousness yet everyone tip-toes around it. Why is that? To satisfy purely academic curiosity I want to know why their women hung their boobs out, did they ever experience the natural physiological response to a chill, where and how does this practice get started, and WHY IN BLOODY HELL IT STOPPED.
Okay, we haven't cracked Linear A, but didn't some other civilization comment? Tourist trade perhaps. The boob thing works for Las Vegas. What' changed? Be interesting to learn the first translated writings on a Minoan pot shard read: "What happens on Crete, stays on Crete"
"I booked a four day weekend at the Labyrinth hotel and spa for vacation."
    "Oh really? What's on Crete?"
"Ah, the food. Yah. It's great. And they do this thing with bulls. Really great...that bull thing...they do."
If other cultures didn't notice and comment then I'd like to know what that says about them since their women covered up their boobs. This is an odd practice even in the more sensual world of the Mediterranean Bronze Age and as far as I can imagine had no practical purpose. Or did it? There is some scant evidence the Egyptians did have an early version of National Geographic that featured Minoan culture in every edition.
Think people. I know why I'd have come up with a design like that, which is pretty close to why I think wet tea-shirt contests are an under appreciated form of artistic expression; but I'm pretty sure that's not the same reason the Minoans had...or was it? And what does it say about us that no one is willing to take this on in a post graduate thesis? "The Minoan Boob Cult And The Sea People." Might be the first time a doctoral distortion, with fold out color research photos of Minoan dress reproductions being modeled, made it to the New York Times bestseller list; along with erudite editorials regarding the sudden and inexplicable explosion of interest in archaeology by average American readers.
"Thanks to the, Minoan Boob Cult, book I have reconsidered my position on learning more about our past to better understand where we are now. In these unsettled times there may be lessons here that might teach us how to breast...best...organize our own society."

I know you're probably only half serious, but honestly, I think the answer is simple. The Minoans left their breasts bare because they simply didn't consider toplessness to be shameful and therefore had no reason to cover up. It used to be the same in Korea where, until the mid 20th century, Korean women traditionally wore clothes that covered most of their body except for their breasts, which they exposed for breastfeeding and/or to indicate to the public that they bore sons.

Guess in a Patriarchy no one wants to acknowledge that the first Great Civilisation in Europe was actually led by women and not men.

I think it possible that the changes on the landscape on the island of Crete and other places in the Late Bronze Age world caused by the harvesting of structural and ship-building timber and unsustainable grazing of livestock may have resulted in environmental degradation, reducing the carrying capacity of the landscape which contributed to the demise of these societies.

I have a hypothesis that the explosion and tsunami may have benefited the Mycenaeans by damaging potential rivals while seriously hurting the Minoans due to the loss of an important prosperous and strategically located port of call at Akrotiri. I discount the effect that a tsunami may have had on the Minoans. Most of their important structures where constructed well above sea level. They had been around for a long time. The geology of the Mediterranean Sea is such to make tsunamis relatively frequent. I think the Minoans knew about tsunami and took measures to reduce the damage from them.

Anybody with the slightest knowledge of how construction materials work will attest that these palaces were never lived in. They are probably necropolises.
