And as the low aggress the high All you can do is sit and cry You've only got yourself to blame Don't try to stop me; it's too late My mind's made up; this job won't wait There's nothing left for me to say Hey! There's no need to debate It's time to designate your fate Take the M out of M.A.D. Let's all make a bomb Take one hundred scientists or more Place in a room and lock the door Let them confer for half their lives Unlock the door; go in and see What they have made for you and me A brand new toy to idolize Although the war has just begun Ignore the sirens; let's have fun Put on your best; go out in style Although our future's looking black We'll go downtown and join the pack Let's celebrate and vapourize
Because they didn't realize the cute new romantic guy brings bigger crowds than the better singer. (not offense to Phil but Glenn was more experienced at the time) Apparently Glenn was going to be the front for Human League but he was in another project, but became available not long after. And that's the original Human League broke up, leaving Phil with the name.
I adore Heaven 17, and have for years. This video, and song, is stunning and just listen to the lyrics...none of the modern day repeated one line rubbish. A story in a song ... As are most of their material. Love them and will do "for a very long time" 😉👍👍👍😉 Thanks Glenn and Martyn for still touring, see you again in November xxx
I remember seeing this vid for the 1st time at Berlin. Chicago. W Belmont Ave. Very early 80s. When it was a narrow strip of bar. Anyone remember it from back then?
Cold War Disco. This is what it was all about in 1981.I was 14 when this came out I still love it and the look of it.I have the Lp still and the CD for the car..Why the Hell not??The Baby boomers can keep their Fleetwood Mac crap.
Well quite a few late millennials and zoomers go ga ga for Fleetwood Mac too, however I agree I was 18 my brother was 19 when this album came out and we both fell in love with underground synth pop so all the 1970's rock albums sounded prehistoric and irrelevant to us then so went to the back of collection, hilarious how all things eventually come around again.
I only ever got into the Human League 16 years later after the fact. I was straight up hardcore punk rock. However this song was about nuclear war and it was just as relevant as any anti-nuke punk anxiety song. Thus I got into synth-pop, then electronica. I recommend to anyone if they can find it on CZcams the BBC: "Young Guns" TV show that talks about how the Heaven 17, Human League and how one became the other.
@whyshouldI303 You're right!. The Penthouse & Pavement album is clearly divided in two parts. The A-side is material produced after they split , and the B- side is material composed while they still were with Phil Oakey.
Thank you so much for posting this, I have been dying to hear this, it was my favourite and my L Ps are worn out, it hit me right in the chest just to hear it again and now I'm going to grin all day. xx
Although the war has just begun Ignore the sirens; let's have fun Put on your best; go out in style Although our future's looking black We'll go downtown and join the pack Let's celebrate and vapourize
Definitely, have thought that since I first heard those words 42 years ago, was never one to completely doomer as life is a gift, a precious and fleeting one, so why not? Just wish others were not so uptight today, living on the down low and more negativity solves nothing.
I had a mix tape with this trak on it, loved it then, and love it now! Gotta dig it if your ears can decifer what's kewl and what not. No need to debate. Hey, there's not need to debate, it's time to designate your fate...let's all make a a different kind of bomb of love and kindness!
Those who ignore history are doomed to make similar mistakes as those in the past, with tragic consequences, a sizable minority of young people are awake but many just don't want to know/hear about it, materialism, entertainment like sport and other distractions are more important.
Wrong............................................................ You can have peace You can have prosperity But you cannot have both at the same time That my friend is called Utopia , and that aint never gonna happen at least in my lifetime Im a young 52 ;)
Tulio Oñate - Phil isn't completely to blame on the break up of the original Human League. Martyn Ware was missing rehearsals and forced the HL to cancel a few gigs. It was costing everyone involved with the band money.Philip thought that Ian would support him. He was wrong. Beside,Glenn Gregory was their original choice for singer, but he wasn't available. Also, Phil was improving as a lyricist and Martyn wasn't thrilled with that at the time. He was the driving force of the original HL band. Philip was not mature enough to talk it out with Martyn at the time.
Very left wing from a different era, the CND No Cruise etc. Get past the politics and Heaven 17 still come up fresh! Timeless music from a still excellent band. Thanks for posting.
Get the album it was the last track on side 2 or 1 (cant remember), it never ended with the two groove thing where the needle stuck on the last sentance (Like Monty Python album that had a three sided record)
Onone hand it's very sad that these two supergroups were once one and then parted... but... had it not happened, than who kows what might have (not) happened... The Human League would not have looked for Joanne and Suzanne... and Heaven 17 would not have happened at all... Still... Penthouse and Pavement is my FAVE Heaven17 album... electro and all chromeplated and yet a lot of funky elements... cool stuff.
@EManic29 Don't know how you never heard , they were never off the telly, and it must have been in every paper. oh and sorry for the 3 month late with reply
Heaven 17 is a more musically trained group than The Human League, Martin, Ian & Glenn are real musicians, with not only electro roots, but also jazz & soul training. Unfortunately Phil Oakey Once was an obnoxiuos moron who fired martin ware and Ian Craig from the League, without knowing even how to program a synth. He rose HL from ashes, But No he wasn't the band's genius!!, although i recognize he has become a great musician & programmer.
Cold War Disco. This is what it was all about in 1981.I was 14 when this came out I still love it and the look of it.I have the Lp still and the CD for the car..Why the Hell not??The Baby boomers can keep their Fleetwood Mac crap.
Most modern bands think lyrics don't matter - but, ooh, they do!! These lyrics reverberate even more in 2017
Agree ❤
Every time I hear the term "mutually assured destruction" (MAD) I think of this song.
And as the low aggress the high
All you can do is sit and cry
You've only got yourself to blame
Don't try to stop me; it's too late
My mind's made up; this job won't wait
There's nothing left for me to say
Hey! There's no need to debate
It's time to designate your fate
Take the M out of M.A.D.
Let's all make a bomb
Take one hundred scientists or more
Place in a room and lock the door
Let them confer for half their lives
Unlock the door; go in and see
What they have made for you and me
A brand new toy to idolize
Although the war has just begun
Ignore the sirens; let's have fun
Put on your best; go out in style
Although our future's looking black
We'll go downtown and join the pack
Let's celebrate and vapourize
The brilliance of the lyrics almost drown out how very good the music is. Perfect music starts here.
Never understood why Heaven 17 were not more successful. They sure as hell were more talented than The Human League.
Because they didn't realize the cute new romantic guy brings bigger crowds than the better singer.

I never get tired of this song, it´s so great....
I remember seeing this vid for the 1st time at Berlin. Chicago. W Belmont Ave. Very early 80s. When it was a narrow strip of bar. Anyone remember it from back then?
The power of the human voice when done right !!
+Phil philly fuck yeh, absolutely, must of overdubbed himself, plenty of chourus etc, sounds soooo good
Tim Drake U should also give the tune LET ME GO-original 12" version a listen....if u haven't all ready....still sounds awesome !!
I remember when Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh split from Phil Oakey, I was devastated.....Penthouse and Pavment certainly made up for it though.
Love it, loved it then and listening now it reminds me of past times, as well as this track, love The Height of the Fighting, Tempations too.
2020 Especially..💣💣💣💣

THE song that goosebumps me every single time ♥ ♥
The done the whole Penthouse album live in Glasgow...and they nailed it fantastic. Very underrated
Had the original line up stayed together this would have appeared on the follow up to Travelogue.
So many memories. It still sounds great!
I hope CZcams will go easy on me when I type "Let's all make a bomb" into the search box.
Hahaha great comment 👍
still sounds fresh and so real for today
very raw, the synths and bass blew up my Marantz speakers and it was worth it !!!
of course !! X
mmm!!!

This shit defined an era!

One of the many top tunes of the 80's !
Although the war has just begun
Ignore the sirens; let's have fun
Put on your best; go out in style
Although our future's looking black
We'll go downtown and join the pack
Let's celebrate and vapourize

Verdammt geil!! Wird's wohl nie wieder geben! Fantastisch

Electronica at it's peak.
And don't forget the funk.
so few bands now have the kind of political/social commentary that bands then did.
+Caleigh Marshall Too busy singing about their tits and rump these days. :(
Internet culture has ruined this generation.
Those who ignore history are doomed to make similar mistakes as those in the past, with tragic consequences, a sizable minority of young people are awake but many just don't want to know/hear about it, materialism, entertainment like sport and other distractions are more important.
2023....
Possibly their best song, IMO.
still listen to my vinyl copy of this...fucken love it !
The original, unsurpassed version.
Still sounds very fresh. Great synthie band of the 80`s.
Incredible song from my teens.
A great album too.

Just Awesome

M... Love it.

I LOVE this song.
It reminds me of my time in England with my husband before he passed away. I love the Piss-Take-ie-ness lol
Great song great lyrics so true that mankind is a fucking scurge on this planet ...
Wrong............................................................
You can have peace
You can have prosperity
But you cannot have both at the same time
That my friend is called Utopia , and that aint never gonna happen at least in my lifetime
Im a young 52 ;)
Man, I miss the early 1980's British music invasion. Party times back then.
Classic!
yes very true, if someone doesn't like the song then they should be free to express their opinion as I have, thank you for the response :)

Great
lets have fun, lets make a bomb.

Back in reality in the future what's going on now in the whole world...
One of my fave songs . Early syth just lush- screw polished modern technology. Just doesn't sound the same.
Still a great track
class,thanks for posting this up
anymore from this album ????
Get the album it was the last track on side 2 or 1 (cant remember), it never ended with the two groove thing where the needle stuck on the last sentance (Like Monty Python album that had a three sided record)

@whyshouldI303
I agree, it has that sound
At the end, Tsar Bomba: the most powerful bomb ever made...
Their live versions dont hit the spot with this track. Its emotional and moody and totally awesome!
Even though they're from the wrong side of the Pennines can't help but love 'em to death. Check out the stuff with La Roux - ace.
@electrozaps man you learn somthing eveyday didnt know 17 and league were in the same band thanx
He, being Martyn Ware.
The organ or synth does give the same beat. I agree that Thom Yorke got that beat from Heaven 17
Oh my goodness after all these years stumbled back down the old tunes of pavements
Isn't this the video of heaven 17's 'Let me go' ? great song though :)
Yes unforunately I don't think a video was made for Let's all make a bomb so that video was used instead.
When England was still for the English
Awesome era for being a Young Englishman ,18 years old (1983)
R.I.P. Dad
Who did the excellent Black & White filming for the Video?
Theres nothing left for me to say
glenn gregory's head would make a great bust
@ayews
Hear, hear!
Fucking FIERCE!
@EManic29 Don't know how you never heard , they were never off the telly, and it must have been in every paper.
oh and sorry for the 3 month late with reply
Sad they did'nt blow up in the US like the human league
H17 correctly predicted the future in Fascist Groove Thing. I hope their prediction making machine was mistaken in this song.
Had the original line up stayed together, it would have been Phil Oakey who would have been the lead singer, not Glenn Gregory!!! ;)
both band were brill ,reproduction and this album very very good
maybe wrong but i think Martin Rushent produced this album ?
Rushent produced Human League's 'Dare'. 'Penthouse and Pavement' was produced by Heaven 17.
No, Penthouse and Pavement was produced by Heaven 17.
+TheChooch1964 Sadly not. The League got a hold of him first.
@whyshouldI303 Good ears.
The atom bomb, at the end - will this be mans' fate? (Hope knots)
i barley found out they got their name from a fictional band in a clockwork orange. I thought the movie was talking about this band haha
@s3xyelf may i ask what the opening monologue of sapphire & steel have to do with this
or am i missing something lol now this brought back memories
@electrozaps how do you know that?
'Go on Corbyn - Push it Push it!' the crowd demanded . .
Heaven 17 is a more musically trained group than The Human League, Martin, Ian & Glenn are real musicians, with not only electro roots, but also jazz & soul training. awesome track,
Pure class, so many memories and doesn't Glen sound so much like Phil Oakey on this track?...........well, I think so anyway
🖤
