Cuckoo Morey as her real name, kick started her career as dancer in the movie Arab ka Sitara in 1946. And established herself as the leading dancing diva in Mehboob khan's movie Anokhi Ada, 1948.She also displayed her acting skills infront legends like Nargisji, Dillip Kumari and Raj Kapoorji in the movie Andaz, 1949. Her dance numbers in movies drew the audiences into the cinema halls. The presence of her numbers in movies had such an effect that even producers and distributors found it impossible to skip them. Her dance showed the charms, flexibility and elegance of unmatched quality. Her eyes along with her body movements were in synch with the rhythm of the song and music. With her dance moves she had the capability to seduce, spell and give goose bums without having the need to shed clothes, unlike today's bollywood item dancers, heroines who dance in skimpily claded clothes or beyond that. But still there's a lot of differences between Cuckooji and today's bollywood item girls or heroines. With dancing, Cuckooji rendered movies watchable with families, introduced Cabaret form of dance, into Indian Cinema industry, gave a great recognition to voices like Shamshad Begum, made the item songs memorable for years to come, helped movies make huge collection as she was a great and special attraction in movies for which the producers made a lot of profit and always promoted dance not skin show.
She had introduced Helenji as a chorus dancer in Shabistan and Awara, 1951 and then Cuckooji and Helenji went on to dance together in other movies as well.
Cuckooji had helped Pranji to get his first break in Ziddi, and then went on to become Pran, the legendary actor. She known helping unknown actors getting their breaks in the Indian cinema industry.
She appeared for the last time in the 1963 movie Mujhe Keene Do.
Her disappearance was never a concern for those who were with her during days of success and happiness. She spend money recklessly and lead a lavish life. She took great care of her close friends. It is even more shocking to learn that none of them took least trouble to attend her when she ailed with cancer and longed for each penny, each grain of food. It really a pity, even producers, who made huge profits from Cuckooji's dance performances in their movies, too did not care to enquire about her during her days of suffering.
And Tabassumji, very well said, ceased ones longed for shoulders to carry it for the last rites who had spent all life making friends and relatives.

Helen is a good person. Maybe some 'majboori'. Maybe not aware. It's sad. My dad used to praise Cuckoo as a dancing artist, Helen too. We saw Helen in our growing up years. Anyone in the industry could've helped. What happened to Cuckoo's property? Sad. Thank-you Tabassum ji.

@Anu Dewri ...I used to live just behind the wall of Sewree Christian cemetry in Mumbai and had heard my mother telling that Helen had come for Dancer Cuckoo's funeral as there was police bandobast near the main entrance. We knew about Helen those days but not about Cuckoo.

You are right. ..the late Premnath did buy taxi for her to ensure regular income. I remember she was buried in Sewree Christian cemetery in Mumbai & Helen attended the funeral.

Breaks my heart listening to Cuckoo's story. She was friends with so many people in the industry but why no one could help her is shocking; I don't mean monetary help every now n then, but supporting her with work for sustenance. Helen's stunningly glamorous avatar and international looks would have upstaged Cuckoo big time. This story had to be told. Thank you Tabassum ji for bringing her story to us.
