  • Tommy Cooper was one of Britain's funniest comedians. Famous for his one and two liners, known as “Cooperisms”, as well as magic tricks that appeared to go spectacularly wrong, but were in fact meticulously choreographed.
A year before he died, he was performing in Jersey. So, just like that, here's our interview with him, unseen for 32 years...

THE most serious i have ever seen him in an interview..even 'Parkinson' never got this close...nice man was Tommy..very funny..and says it like it is..sadly missed..still watch his shows from time to time..his mastery of 'play on words; was insurpasable and sheer genious!..loved it when he was in a restaurant and said to the waiter 'Do you serve lobsters?' and the waiter says 'yes sir' and then Tommy puts the lobster on the table next to him...priceless! there's no one like him and there never will be..RIP Tommy Cooper x

Tommy was so right, at the closing question, that the audience knows if the performer has a cockey attitude. Nothing kills a performer's streetcred, or the affection an audience might previously have felt for a performer than ddiscovering they have acquired a cocky attitude. It is even recognisable in videos made years ago! Tommy Cooper didnt suffer from a cockey attitude any more than his act sometimes contained inuendo or smut. Stupid interviewer, it was his own dirty mind! Tommy Cooper was a straight down the line 'clean humour' comedian and you knew without a doubt you could relax and enjoy his show. He was the ultimate in witty and humour because of it. Akin to bad Dad-jokes, his humour and actions just evoked spontaneous laughter like that of a young child - joyful and fun, pure magic. Comedians who use foul language as the driving force of their act really are not comedians at all. like singers who have to have hitech editing to make their songs listenable when their singing is very weak they are not, therefore, singers with a natural lovely voice! Tommy Cooper was authentic in every cell of his body. I think his almost exaggerated humility hid a very sad man. What a pity he couldnt believe that his audience loved him and wanted him to feel as happy at all times as he made them.

Whoever the interviewer was, apparently he was divorced from reality. It doesn't sound like he'd ever seen Tommy's act, let alone understood it. A hack, making things up, looking for an angle and an exclusive, but Tommy suffocated all that. Nowadays his work is museum material, and a product of the times. But as the description implies, Tommy was a meticulous master of magic, stage craft, and timing. He's become timeless. Unlikely there'll be much post-modernist comic material in collections and archives, in fifty years time.

"Have you ever died a death on stage.?" Oh yes & it felt terrible..! Buckle up Tommy because it's gonna happen again & feel a whole lot worse, but the irony is that this time the audience are going to laugh their tits off & think it's just a part of the act...Sad but it was his destiny to depart on stage, engulfed in a cloud of inappropriate, but timely laughter...
