  • In this installment of Baldur's Gate for Dummies, we're tackling THAC0.
As this decades-old masterpiece continues to draw in new players, there is never a shortage of people asking: what is up with THAC0? How does it work? Should the number decrease or increase? What does it even mean when my THAC0 is negative?
This video will show an introduction for absolute beginners, but veterans might also enjoy the rooftop simulation in the second half of the video.

Out of all the THAC0 info I looked up, this made the most sense to me. Thanks a lot Flipside Mercury. Majorly appreciate it!

Jeez! Thank you. I downloaded baldur's gates 2 on my phone and this is my first experience with DND games. Extremely confusing!
That 4th scenario is especially helpful.

So is to hit based off your weapon? If so lower to hit is better?

One just has to roll a d20 + modifiers and the target's AC if the result equals or exceeds their THAC0 you hit them. If yer THAC0 is 20 and the target's AC is 6. Adding 6 to the Die roll to try to get a 20 is the same as subtracting 6 from 20 and trying to make a 14 with just yer d20 roll + modifiers. Use 20 as yer Target Number/DC by default then roll d20 + BHB/BAB + other modifiers like skill or attribute bonus...simple.

It's math. Math is hard. Don't play 2E if math is hard.

The music is needless and too loud. It’s 3 minute video. It’s short to get bored. Moreover, People are here to learn something, not to get entertained. Thanks though.
