400W Chinese Ebay Latern Vertical Wind Turbine Performance

  • In short, do not buy! My unit did not produce even 5 watts during the week I had it up, and there were 40-60 MPH wind gusts during this time. Specs state the rated wind speed is 144w m/s...26 mph. This is where it should output 400 watts.
    The primary problem is highlighted in the photo of the motor...I believe the magnets are simply not strong enoufh for one. In any case, it is not a quality build, but then what do you expect for $200? At least half the rated power output I'd say.

    Electrician here.
    so many flaws in this video. from incorrect equipment for the test, incorrect testing methods, improper use of the equipment. His tests gave bad results because they were done poorly and incorrectly.
    not trying to defend the turbine manufacturer
    1. Your turbine cannot output more then the load. if you are using a 100ma motor you will not see anymore output then that.
    2. blocked rotor test will increase amperage and lower voltage. ALWAYS but will still not pull more then the BR rating of that motor. on a motor that size I wouldn't expect much. especially since you can stop in by hand.
    3. you cannot zero out a meter for DC when the wire is in it. whatever you calibrate. whatever is running through it at the time will be zero. If you have 5DCA running through your meter when you zero it out it will calibrate 5DCA to 0. You can zero out AC with the wire in.
    4. its hard to tell from the video but it also looks like you are measuring the amperage on the output of the charge controller. but running your tests off your DIY rectifier from the AC side, which is not inline with where you are evening metering for amperage. This would explain why your amp meter reduced when you blocked the rotor. because the volt drop is effecting the other load.
    I am only 2 minutes in.
    skipped to the end. "WIRING IS NOT THE ISSUE" , your testing method is.

    I bought this junk a year ago, I see a lot of comments about watts and amps but nobody talks about voltage, we understand that to charge a 12 volt battery bank the wind turbine should produce at least 13 volts and more at the regulator output, to have a voltage of 13 to 14.5 VOLT on the voltmeter, the rotor had to rotate 3 rotations per second , which means a windstorm of 70 miles an hour and more that could potentially tear off the blades of the wind turbine.
    If this video had been produced before I ordered my wind turbine it is clear that I would not have bought it... with or without wind through the producer's explanations, good job.

    Ok guys, I purchased one of these to do my own testing last week, the same issues mentioned in this video exist in the one I purchased, it simply wont put out 24 volts and the blade design caused fowling resulting in the turbine falling short of enough RPM, factory stats are all bullshit! The strengthening ribs cast into the plastic blades prevent the wind air pressure from escaping easily which then causes the fowling. The alternator has the same thin wiring and would only produce around an amp when spun up to a speed where 24 volts was produced. The other issue is the clearance between the rotor and stator, it's simply too large and they did it I assume to prevent cogging for low wind start up, what it actually does is cause a weak magnetic field as each magnet passes a pole. The solution is to instead fit neodymium magnets which will greatly increase the output, more gauss = more electrical output. I will try this and lets hope it fixes the problem as the factory magnets are too weak for the job, failing that, rewinding with heavier windings is next! Don't get me wrong, they are a pretty looking turbine and look like they would more than do the job, but what your actually buying is a spinning decoration, nothing more unless you mod it to work better!

    I did some calculations and found 18 watts theoretical maximum at 12 m/s but not 400. This comes i.e. because the relative windspeed of the 2 working blades is smaller than the outer windspeed and the relative windspeed of the parasitic blades (=loss) is bigger than the outer windspeed. But windspeed-power is rel. windspeed^3 ! Thus the catched power will be eaten up at bigger RPM.

The diameter of generator is 320mm. at weight is 14~20kg. can generate max 2000W when running at 400~500rpm. but, if installed on vertical turbine, can generate around 100~150W (in max)

    I've rewound a few alternators for home built wind turbines and the windings in this alternator are too fine, you will get voltage but low amperage, it needs heavier windings to produce higher amperage. I'd say this turbine is only designed to trickle charge a battery over many hours with its charge controller only preventing over charging of your battery, this unit is more likely to be 400 watts per hour, but these Chinese sellers won't tell you that little detail! Maybe take it to a rewinding place and get them to up the gauge of the wire? An expert in rewinding alternators will give you advice on how to improve it.

    The DC motor will only draw a minimal current, as the internal resistance of the motor is going to be small. Current flow is dependent not only on the voltage level but also the internal resistance of your load. Try hooking it up to the 12V batteries you have when they are not fully charged and you will see a big difference in the current flowing.

    What does stopping the motor have to do with it generating power or not? Can someone explain the theory to me here???

    • @ianl1741
      @ianl1741 Před 5 lety

      Stalling the motor with my hand results in the motor drawing more current in an attempt to continue rotating. Completely stalled the motor is drawing about 200 milliamps or so. When the current draw on the turbine increases, the voltage tends to decrease. If you were to short the turbine, the voltage would go to zero, because P =IV, power = current * voltage. Increase current draw, voltage must drop for a given power generation capacity.

    • @thenewfire
      @thenewfire Před 5 lety +1

      Still not sure what that is supposed to show us. If you short the load, you should have no voltage, therefore no power. It is doing exactly what it supposed to do when you stall it...

    • @ianl1741
      @ianl1741 Před 5 lety

      It's showing you that the voltage drops significantly if you put even a 200 ma load on the turbine...meaning it is hardly producing anything. That's it! Plain and simple. Just a visual demonstration. Now connect that same motor across a car battery and it'd start your car absolutely no problem with the motor stalled. The car battery has 900 cold cranking amps or so. 0.2 amps is a drop in the bucket. If the turbine was producing 30 amps like it was rated to, that would also be a drop in the bucket and the voltage would not decrease observably. If you truly short the load voltage will approach zero but never get there...after all even a small length of wire has a resistance. But yes you remind me....that simple equation doesn't quite say it all. These things do have a power curve...there is a current draw such that power is maximized...this is what MPPT solar controllers do (I have a $600 unit).

    The generators used in this type of turbines are made to spin at approx. 2000 rounds/s + to generate specified power output. Which is impossible. Same as you would put a car alternator in the turbine, will do some power but not even close to specified as they are made to turn even at 5000 rpm. Try putting on a different generator, permanent magnet generators are made to work under low rpm. I'm guessing you'd be happier with the results that these type of generators work in your conditions. But i might be wrong.

    My bet is it's just not hooked up correctly. His Diode set up is wrong or something. The power drops because your effectly shorting out the source stopping the motor. Get a proper Three Phase Diode block . Short out any two of your leads to each other. If the PMA does not Slow down BREAK, it's defective and not producing.

    Thanks for the fantastic review. . . I own a house off the grid and was looking for a Turbine. . .When I saw this review, It solidified what my suspicions were on these Chinese Turbines. Eventhough you may have used some wrong terminology, you did a fantastic job with showing your meters and small motor hookups.
    I immediately knew exactly what you were talking about. I did a little research on these turbines, and these turbines are NOT producing 600 watts instantaneously. But I read an article that said they put out 600 watts over a certain length of time. . .like a week. This coincides with what your review is showing. . .600 watts over a time period. 600 watts over a day is only about 24 watts a hour on a 24 volt system.
    Wind is the absolute worse alternative energy you can use. Solar is your best bet. Much cheaper. I use 1200 watts to power my 1400 square foot house in the mountains, and that runs a 50 inch TV, blenders, lights, water pump, and other equipment.
    Good job. . .Keep up the good work.

      Dear friend, I saw your reply. I want to say that there are many good wind turbines in China. This wind turbine is more suitable for use with solar panels. This wind turbine is suitable for installation in street lamps with complementary scenery. Above. I am a manufacturer of wind turbines in China. We have 6 years of experience in production and installation. There are many models suitable for off-grid systems. If you are still looking for wind turbines, I hope I can give you some help. You can add me. WhasAPP: +8613338743305. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • @Iamsuccesspro
      @Iamsuccesspro Před 3 lety

      I have those kind of jumper wires, and they're not there best, not even soldered at the clips, try something again like a bulb rated for the voltage of the generator and see if it will glow, you can also test amps. This would be a.c current not DC. It has to produce more than that. You can take any two wires. Don't let the third wire touch anything.
      I don't know how youh hooked up the 3 and six diodes keeping in mind that it is a three phase gen.

    *All practical tests show that all small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity.*
    And mostly at costs very significantly above 1$/kWh!
    This is because there is hardly any wind close to the ground & extremely gusty, which always reduces the lifespan of the systems.
    *Solar panels, on the other hand, generate electricity reliably for 25 years at approx. 3-10 cents/kWh!*
