Siki Jo-An - ‘The Click Song' | Blind Audition | The Voice SA: Season 3 | M-Net
Vložit
- čas přidán 9. 02. 2019
- From her piercing ululation which shattered the silence on stage to her powerful and pitch-perfect homage to Miriam Makeba's ‘Qongqothwane’ - Siki Jo-An proved she meant business getting one of the fastest four-chair turns EVER and a standing ovation. Despite impressive pitches from our panel, it was Riana who won her over ultimately.

She made sure everybody was wide awake before she started singing!🤣
How great was that?
It reminds me of the disney movie Coco where Hector teaches Miguel that a good song needs a proper 'greeto' beforehand. It makes people start paying attention.
Nina Mo is she South African
you ruined it for me
naomi Ayandiji Yes she is. Singing in isiXhosa, one of the official languages here in SA. It’s known for the clicks
There’s no way you can just watch this once and be satisfied
Right! I'm on my 20th rewind.
You got that right
Once is enough for me. Certainly enjoyed the video though.
Siki Jo-An nails the spirit of this joyful song. The little beetle whose tapping signals the coming good from God in the form of rains, is a representative of an indomitable spirit. WE NEED more music like this. More than ever, the world needs to see the little signs of God’s goodness to come. It transcends all peoples, places and times, because we need this kind of hope, and to be present in the moment for the little good things today.
I sure hope Siki leans into these types of arrangements of traditional songs. They are so much more beautiful than pop music of today.

😂😂 sure wasn’t. Here for it!!
You're not going to see this anywhere else in the world. This is uniquely African.
If you mean the ululating then I'm afraid you are wrong. I am Zimbabwean living in England and last year, my family and I were in a Turkish restaurant we go to often, but this particular night there was a birthday celebration of this Turkish person and their big family. After the cake came and they sang Happy Birthday, the women started ululating. We were sitting right behind them so my mum and aunty turned around and smiled at them in surprise. They also joined in on the ululating and the Turkish family were amazed and we all broke out into laughter. The Turkish family was so happy about the joint ululating that they cut us some large slices of cake, which was so lovely of them.
I had always thought that ululating was uniquely Zimbabwean and South African. I never even knew that other Africans also ululate, so it was a big surprise to discover that non Africans have the same culture when celebrating. That day I learnt that ululating was intercontinental.

I watched a show with Miriam Makeba in 1963 where she sang this. I liked it a lot even as a small child and that was the day I learned to hate apartheid.
Even so. Half way into this version of the song I had tears in my eyes and no way to explain why.

If anyone says representation doesn't matter, show them this. The pride and joy across the room speaks to that.
Thank you. Growing up in Africa, I never knew that representation was important until I moved to USA and had my own children who don't have the privilege of growing up in a black majority country
@@tendiwero So well said. I grew up in Africa too and only realised when I moved abroad that that in itself was a privilege. For my race to never factor in any decisions, opportunities, interactions is a privilege.

Qongqothwane is a traditional song of the Xhosa people of South Africa. It is sung at weddings to bring good fortune. In the western world it is mainly known as The Click Song, a nickname given to the song by European colonials who could not pronounce its Xhosa title, which has many click consonants in it. The Xhosa title literally means "knock-knock beetle", which is a popular name for various species of darkling beetles that make a distinctive knocking sound by tapping their abdomens on the ground. These beetles are believed by the Xhosa to bring good luck and rain.
The song is known world-wide thanks to the interpretation of South African singer Miriam Makeba (herself a Xhosa). In her discography the song appears in several versions, both with the title Qongqothwane and as The Click Song.
More information on the song can be found in Makeba's book The World of African Song (Chicago: Quadrangle Books, 1971), including the following translation: "The doctor of the road is the beetle / He climbed past this way / They say it is the beetle / Oh! It is the beetle."
She explains the song as a traditional folk song which refers to the knocking beetle which makes clicking sounds and can revolve the top part of its body in any direction. The beetle is used in children's games to point the way home, but also has a deeper symbolism, pointing the way to a better future in times of trouble. In her biography (p.86), she mentions singing it in The Village Vanguard Club in New York, and calls it a "Xhosa song about a dreamy bride".
Thank you for all that information S N Smith 🙂. Very insightful!
You could write for Wikipedia

It’s one of Miriam Makeba songs and she sung in Xhosa and sometimes Zulu which are Southern Bantu languages. Although they have Khoi-San influences, they are not Khoi-San, but Southern Bantu.
It's actually a traditional song Makeba put into production and shared with the world. You nailed it about the differences in the Bantu groups.

This is the first time I am seeing the South Africa version of "The Voice." I see a problem here. Most South African vocalists have voices directly from Heaven so how can they be judged? I have listened to these amazing vocalists and am in total awe. When I listen to the choirs also and hear their beautiful harmonies. I am from Trinidad and I am currently learning the pronunciation of this beautiful language as I will be soon learning this song as well as "pata pata." I will not be negative and say that it is difficult. I will say that I accept the challenge. I will sing the songs to the best of my ability but this beautiful vocalist in addition to all South African vocalists are in a higher class. I am inspired and very happy to have found this version. Who ever gave this a thumbs down is obviously brain damaged. "Heavenly Father forgive them for they know not what they do!"
I just subscribed gave it a thumbs up. Let's keep the thumbs going up everyone!😊. Gonna do some research on this to see if it's happening now and basically to position myself to hear more singing from this beautiful country.
