One episode of 'The Super Mario Bros Super Show!' that stands out in my mind had a wraparound segment where voice actor Maurice LaMarche played Inspector Gadget (all of the Mario cartoons were produced by DIC who also created Gadget). Ironically, LaMarche went on to become the official voice of Gadget after Don Adams passed away.
There was also another series attempt called 'King Koopa's Kool Kartoons' where an actor in a King Koopa costume hosted an afternoon kids' cartoon show. The project was pulled when 'King Koopa' responded to a fan letter in which a kid insulted Koopa and the actor replied with "Well, you can think whatever you want, but now I know where you live!" This actually happened. Look it up.

@@JasonICECarson Actually, Pinky was the genius, Brain was insane. They actually very subtly but cleverly reveal that in the Pinky and the Brain theme song, when the lyrics say "One is a genius" they show Pinky and "the other's insane" they show Brain.
Throughout the segments, Brain comes up with half-baked schemes to take over the world (insane) and Pinky keeps pointing out all of the ways his schemes could - and often do - fail (genius).

    RIP Captain Lou.
The first time I heard of the Super Mario cartoons was through my school's book fair. They would give us these catalogues in advance in case we wanted to special order something, and one of the things in the catalogue was a VHS of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, specifically the Koopzilla episode. So I made sure to get that and was able to see a few episodes that way, but at the time the SMBSS wasn't in syndication on any of our stations, so I couldn't watch it. So I was really excited when the SMB3 cartoon came around, and I agree that it's the best of the cartoons. My sister and I used to pretend to be Koopa Kids and that our dad was "King Dad."
I saw the racism episode on CZcams a few years ago for the first time in decades, and I was shocked at how accurate and deep a commentary it was by a TV show aimed at eight year olds to promote video games about squashing evil mushrooms and turtles.

I was born in 1992, so I missed out on the initial hype of the DiC Mario cartoons. However, I managed to get into the shows starting in 2006, and I like them quite a bit.
My favorite is The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. The show has quite a few accuracies from its source game, and I absolutely love the portrayal of the Koopalings. I...actually prefer their game names, but still dig many of their personalities, like Kooky's inventiveness and Hip and Hop's close bond.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show is still fun, if only for the outlandish callbacks to popular media, and I liked seeing Yoshi talk in Super Mario World.

This was a really fun (& topical for the 35th) video, Andre! Totally agree that the Mario 3 cartoon doesn't get talked about nearly enough compared to its significantly-less-accurate predecessor. I actually first saw all three cartoons the same way (VHS releases) and my mind was BLOWN when I discovered each subsequent one. (Much in the same way I grew up on Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and then a random SatAM VHS introduced me to a new world of possibility. "There was a Sonic cartoon that was like the comics?!" *Insert explosion sound*) I remember being shocked by the Mario World cartoon in particular because it was on a generic Christmas-themed VHS that was just labeled "Super Mario Bros." Certainly was not expecting to get my first view of an animated Yoshi when I popped it in.
Two random cartoon-related thoughts: First, I love how Harvey Atkin (RIP) as King Bowser Koopa (a full name they actually use in the Mario 3 cartoon on occasion) was the most consistent element across all three cartoons. The Bros and the Princess swapped voices after the Super Show and Toad was dropped in favor of Caveman Bart Simpson in World, but ol' Koopa was still the same as he ever was by World. (Minus his weird King K. Rool-esque disguise gimmick in Super Show.) Even in cartoons Bowser is the best. Lastly, even though World had the weird Caveman focus, it still had plenty of really cool game-centric bits. (Namely the musical montages where Mario just goes to work and some neat other touches like Koopa's neon castle consistently being the one from the end of World. They even use the Star Road in an episode!)
Anyway, really enjoyed this and hope you're planning on talking about more old cartoons in the near future, Andre, as these are definitely my favorite type of video you do as an animation nerd myself. 😊 (Maybe you could do a video on the Sonic cartoons for his 30th next year? Just an idea.)

Then months later I forgot all about them and I lost the whole collection. To this day I'm still pissed about it!! Yeah I could get the originals online like eBay or Amazon but they priced them sky high! And they're used?? SMFH

    Thank you!
I always felt The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 was the more accurate portrayal of the video game than Super Mario Super Show or Super Mario World. From use of the power ups, the use of the 8 Worlds in the game as backdrops and using them at the beginning of every episode. Heck its the only one of the Mario cartoons to call Koopa by his real name Bowser!
Even though I enjoyed Super Show's references to movies and Rap Land was my favorite episode. But at times the lack of complete references to the game and up worlds like Pasta Land, Rotonda Land, The Oriental City of Sayonara etc were a deal breaker at times for me. Adventures of Mario 3 was what envisioned that Mario Bros cartoon is supposed to look like the only thing that it was missing was a Christmas episode. Super Show had a Christmas episode and so did World. Why didn't Adventures of Mario 3 get one?
I mean the plot would have been easy. Christmas time is coming around in the Mushroom Kingdom, Santa (while setting up shop in Ice Land) is about to make his annual rounds and all of the kids are excited about what Santa is bringing them. Except of course the Koopa Kids because they're on the naughty list and naturally the main one making the biggest fuss about it is Kootie Pie because she's a spoiled brat. 😄 So Bowser comes with a plan with the help of his mad genius son Kooky to make a machine that takes away all the toys from Santa's Bag and Mario, Luigi Princess Toadstool and Toad have to get them back.

It’s no wonder why Super Mario Bros 3 was more potential than Super Mario Bros Show, it sticks to the true formula of the third game and had a lot of elements properly used. In fact the 90s for animation was kind of staring to age well, that’s nicely said of you. I recommend you review the animated series of Sonic the Hedgehog (The Adventures, Satam, Underground and more TV series related to Sonic) that would be so awesome.

Fun Fact: The producers of the Super Mario Bros. 3 TV show named the Koopalings without knowing that they already had names in the game. Also, in the game the Koopalings are all named after musicians:
Larry Koopa - Larry Rummer Jr. (U2)
Morton Koopa Jr. - Morton Downy Jr. (He played the drums)
Wendy O. Koopa - Wendy O. Williams (of the Plasmatics - a punk band)
    Iggy Koopa - Iggy Pop
    Roy Koopa - Roy Orbison
Lemmy Koopa - Lemmy Kilmister (Motorhead)
Ludwig Von Koopa - Ludwig Von Beethoven
