- I was very wary when I first came across this recipe - the combination of minced beef and cheese strikes me as a bit weird. But it actually works wonderfully and I don't know why minced beef and cheese pies aren't more common. They are very popular in parts of Australia and New Zealand, and they really are yummy!
A few people have asked where they can buy those pie dishes. This is an affiliate link to Amazon UK - these perforated dishes seem to have replaced the ones that I have: amzn.to/2sikOIv

New Zealand pies can’t be beat. The best
I totally agree!
kiwi girl which one? BP ones are ok.
You got the Pav but not the Pie! :)
Actually cobber there are two pies that can't be beat Aussie and Kiwi pies.
@william te whata Oh! Really !
I've tralleved all over the world and I've still never had a pie that can even compete with NZ bakery made steak and cheese pies.
Thank you so much for taking your time out to show us this awesome recipe can’t wait to try it!
As an Englishman, I am very familiar with steak pies, steak and kidney pies, steak and onion pies, minced beef and potato pies, even cheese and onion pasties. I have NEVER heard of a beef and cheese pie, but these are going straight to the top of my ‘to do’ list.
Steak Stilton? I had the Lidl ones. Absolutely disgusting. Normal steak pies from them are much better.
One of the more refreshing videos I have seen - thank you for your candor and knowledge.
Made these yesterday and was so proud of myself! They looked just like your video and I made the same noises as you when I had my first bite. Lol. Granted, I think I watched the video over 20 times! Next time, I will add fresh chili peppers with the onions as the other Texan suggested...we like things spicy! Thanks for all your great videos Keef...I’m addicted to your channel and love your no-nonsense approach and sense of humor!
Keef.....this is the best pie recipe ever!!!
I have orders coming out of my ears.....many ,many thanks.
I can confirm, I am Australian and one of my most fav pies is a steak and cheese pie, its a very common pie choice in any good bakery or cafe here in Australia. Steak and Mushroom would be another fav of mine.
Oh my gosh. I have looked at so many videos today which made me hungry and this one is no exception... These look WONDERFUL. Thanks for sharing. Sandee
When I went to school back in the 1950s a pie cart came out on a particular day to the school.
The pie was topped with mushy green peas and black (Worcestershire Sauce) of asked for.
NO tomato sauce ! BLACK sauce or nothing. The aroma of that black sauce on or in the pie was a pure delight.
NEVER apologize for your Aussie accent!
Great looking recipe and video. Can't wait to try it.
I grew up in Adelaide from ages 5 to 12 then moved back to the states. Lost my Aussie accent damn it.
I remember pies like this and sausage rolls. People love when I make sausage rolls, but I want to add a pie to my list of nostalgic cooking.
Can't wait to try this.
Thank you.
Looks amazing! Can't wait to male these, thanks for sharing!
I made your Lancashire butter pie and it was fantastic loved by the family. So I can’t wait to try this.
Awesome! Thanks for the baking tips. They look great.
They are the most popular meat pie in NZ, can get em everywhere.
I went to Aussie for a couple weeks in 2017, went into four bakeries total not one steak and cheese.
Cheese and steak readily availible here in the west, when I make my own i put grated cheese on top of the pie then brown off, tasty as. Cheers
That’s because Australians only eat good pies, not shit ones.
Kiwi pie for sure. Ive never seen a mince and cheese pie in Australia only Beef mince, bacon and cheese.
Can you post the recipe pls
Been buying beef mince & cheese pies here in Adelaide for 20 years or more....a true fave.
I don't know what rock you've been living under, but even Coles and Woolies stock these sort of pies and more.
Does chilli and cheese count?
That’s most brilliant tip ever seen on here .pastry in tin then pressing down with another tin etc! Pastry wow looks amazing and I will be definitely be following today’s recipe you done .👍🏻💙 thanks for sharing .
Thank you so much!
Yes Keef, the "Pie floater" Pie in pea soup was in Adelaide last I looked but "Pie and Peas"(mushy peas) was all over. The other difference I think is most ozzy pies use puff pastry (on top). Your take on this pie and cheese looks yummy, as does pretty much everything you make. Thanks Keef, keep you and yours safe, Cheers 🥧.
Made this today. Fantastic. Thank you for recipe.
holy smokes! they look delicious! i first had meat pies in australia and have been looking for some ever since. guess i have to make them myself. thank you.
Thank you for making this video...It looks delicious.
I’m glad I’ve found this channel! I love the way you make your meat pies! 🥧😃🙌🏼 I’ve made the exact same pies for my family using this recipe & it was a hit! They LOVED IT!! Thank you for sharing. 🙏🏽🥰🫶
You're welcome!
"buy a cheap pie and throw it away" LOL
I just found the best way to make dough and it was through you thank you very much😊
it's funny but i've been living in Sydney for the past 10 years and one of the things I miss from home (NZ) is a good old mince and cheese pie. literally no cafe, bakery, sells them here, this is my experience. I enjoyed watching the video, especially some of the tricks you demonstrated, I can't wait to make some pies!
Good luck!

Amazing! Thank you, Keef. Will try this!
i had this while i was in auckland. It is to die forr!!! amazinggg! thanks for the recipe!
It is a bit magical.
Omg I made this pie last night and my husband LOVED IT. It was delicious. Thank you!
These were fabulous! Thanks for the recipe.
You are so welcome!
I always use your recipe whenever I miss the Oz/ NZ pies! Thanks so much. Love from Hong Kong.
I've never had one. I'm from Alabama. One of my best friends is from New Zealand and I want to try them.
@@austinstockman8400 it’s delicious
Those look FANTASTIC. Thank you, cheers
Hello Heids, you got a beautiful photo on your page. Will like to connect
Homemade pies 🥧 are delicious and yummy then the ones you buy in the store.....top notch they are truly looking good 👍🏾
Yeah gidday cobber. Will definitely be giving this recipe a go.😊.Thanking you Robbbert from Melbourne Australia.
Thank you, they look amazing.
Hi Keef from New Zealand. Steak and cheese pies are my favourite. We use flaky pastry for the best pies. I make them often and the delux versions have mushrooms in as well. After a lot of experimenting I discovered that the best pies have the meat cooked and cooled the day before. I use shin beef as it has a lot of taste as well as natural jelly which helps it set. I only use cornflour for thickening. Cut the tasty cheese into cm square chunks in the homemade pies
So, I've just recently discovered this channel and become hooked. This is a great example of a typical pie here, which is good because there's dreadfully few on the internet generally. The tradition of serving a pie in a bowl of pea soup is very specific to Adelaide, capital of South Australia, and is virtually unknown in the rest of the country. It's called a Pie Floater. Traditionally you'd also slather the pie with tomato sauce when you're done, even if it's in a floater.
Yeah heard about Pie Floaters from a Terry Pratchett book!
may he rest in peace :(
This is a fascinating variation of some of the other recipes I've seen here on CZcams, and demonstrates why I've found it to always be a good idea to watch multiple videos about a given recipe, before deciding to make it myself.
I've never seen the pastry pre-cooking method before. If anything, the pastry is usually left to stand for anywhere between four to eight hours after it has been initially worked. It might be worth testing both, to find out which of the two I prefer. This method would certainly be quicker, which is an advantage.
Pastry pre-cooking - you mean the hot water pastry? It's not pre-cooked (you really wouldn't want to eat it before baking) - melting the lard into the water just saves a lot of time.
Beautiful pies. I will try this soon
That looks great, will attempt tonight!
thank you for delicious pie recipe. I will use it with pleasure!
Definitely making this tonight... Thanks for the recipe
That looks tasty and wonderful!
Absolutely amazing
😀
Ooooooooooooh, those look delightful!
Why’d I watch this before bed?! Now I’m stonkingly hungry.
Me and my kids loved the pie!
Nice recipe! I'll definitely try this! I got addict on this pie when i was visiting NZ last year 😊
Mince and Cheese Pies are actually more of a NZ favorite. Along with Sausage rolls and Bacon and egg pies. You'll struggle to find a bakery here in Australia that can bake any of these as good as our Kiwi bakeries. Some bakeries here in Brisbane don't even make mince and cheese pies... and some Aussies have never heard of that combination! I couldn't believe it as we grew up on them back home hehehe Kiwis love pies!! :)
Strangely, one of the people who told me this was typically Australian was a Kiwi, the other was Australian. Anyway, not here to argue about origins - it's delicious whoever invented it!
I agree. Aussies like their pepper steak or if they do make cheese pie it's baked on top oml
hmmm
Chuck some watties tomato sauce on it. she'll be right.
cheese, cheese and bacon, curry and plain pies are all staples in australian bakeries. i can't comment if kiwi's make better ones or not but i can say i've had some in aus that were perfection.
Looks great. Thank you very much.
Very nice looking pies, thank you for the recipe :)
Outstanding!
Nicely done, Keef. I've done it and it is indeed delicious. I used sharp white cheddar mixed with a bit of Moz. Your mince looks better than mine for sure. I must find a better butcher. Thank you for sharing.
Planning to make this on Hari Raya look so good 😍
My wife and I love these pies. Never saw them in either Aus or NZ though. I make them for a special treat!
Just some minor changes that I think improve the dish slightly.
Cut the onion thinner, thick chunks have a stronger flavour that can sometimes feel strange.
Add the black pepper when sautéing the onion and make sure its freshly ground.
Add the parsley once its all finished just before the final mix, adding fresh herbs too early removes the flavours.
As well as flour, corn starch also works well in the beef mix.
mixing a little mozzarella with cheddar makes it more stringy and makes it look really nice.
Thank you for the easy dough recipe, just subscribed 🌹
Thank you from Alberta Canada!
As an Aussie i can say ive never really seen this type of pie before, though i wouldnt be shocked if its not made by any of the Harry de Wheels places. Im told they make very good mushy peas too
Looks great !
Yummmm😍thanks for sharing🤗
Kiwi Pie , the BEST. I am living in Melbourne now.
Hello from HK,
Looking so yummy. Will try soon. Thank you for sharing.💕✨
You're welcome Sukanya.
I'm a Kiwi and luv my pies, steak n cheese being my fav. I lived just out of cairns for 13yrs and no-one made a steak n cheese pie. In 2015 we did a 2week road trip and moved the family to Tasmania. From cairns to Melbourne no-one sold a steak and cheese pie. So I can safely say that no-one makes these pies in Australia, and if you do, you got it from us.
Well every bakery in Western Australia iv'e been to has them and has done for the 40+ years iv'e lived here. Cause traveling from Cairns to tassie is all of Australia......... :/
Anatoni Wirihana I live in WA and every bakery and servo sells steak and cheese
Australia has the Steak bacon and cheese. But you are right steak and cheese is only a NZ thing
I ate a steak cheese pie in Brisbane yesterday and have eaten regularly in the years before. You need to go to individual bakeries that make their own.
@@yeahrightmate
Exactly 👍 S. A have them all over
Nice video kefir. I like the pie cases and the way you stacked them
Keep, Kefir. I don't know if you're messing about with my name because you think it's funny or if autocorrect is doing it...anyway, glad you like my pies!
@@Keefcooks omg I never noticed! Predictive text or something. It does my head in. Sorry for that
Fantastic liked and shared
Keef I love the way you stack the pie tins and cut the edges. Genius! Always annoyed me trying to press the pastry right into the tins and having to trim the edges. Thanks for this advice!!
When I was making pies for sale I would stack them 8 high...
@@Keefcooks Any idea where I could source those tins in the UK. Is there a specific name for them that I could try and Google? Thanks in advance.
Looks good. I'll make them this week.
Lovely Australian pies keef
Here in south Australia we have a few good old country style bakerys that make cheese pies and they are delishous. Thanks for making a Australian pie mate . Cheers
This is a kiwi pie. In the sense that it's actually good.
I live in QLD and when I visited NZ the pies reminded me, and were identical in quality and taste and variety, as South Oz bakeries....especially the country towns.
@@sketch3744 that is true mate
WOW!! Thanks mate, super have tried and will try other pies from you. Cheers!
Thanks Stella! Good luck with the others :-)
Hello Stella, your profile is beautiful would like to connect
Making these tonight thanks for your recipe 🙏🏼
Hello Elaine, I’ll like to come have some? Lol…. You got a nice profile I must say. And would like to connect.
Thank you. I'm gonna try them!
looks so simple!! i take it there is no fast rule about seasoning..i have to try these pies!!
Really shouldn't watch these recipes when hungry...

😱 cannot wait to mke this!!!
Look magical
Very professional THANKS
These look delicious.
No need to apologize for the accent. Its really cool. I really enjoyed your content. Greetings from USA.
Love these videos
These look delicious
I live in Texas and I add some local chili peppers to this and it’s fantastic. 👍
Love your work Keef! These pies look amazing.
If there was such a thing as an 'Aussie pie', it would be slightly thinner, served in a paper bag and eaten from the paper bag. It never touches a plate, or cutlery (unless it's a pie floater in Adelaide, of course).
Also, a self respecting Adelaidean (or Adelaide bakery) never uses 'mince' in a pie. We've had some slightly marginal mass production pies in the past, but these days the quality of ingredients is very good. We have a particularly outstanding pie maker in Adelaide named 'Vilis' and their pies can even sometimes be found in London. They are exceptional.
I don't think it's really possible to propose the idea of an 'Australian pie', since there's so much variation from place to place.
Given the vast distance between cities and their rather separate history, this is understandable and makes for quite an interesting mixture of things! 🙂
Lovely!!
Makes me homesick 😔 yummmm you made it perfect 👍
Wow delicious
this is nice. we dont have ready made pie crusts here in my place, so im looking for an easy crust to make. i miss aussie pies
i am going to try and make this during my school break
Mince and cheese pies are defiantly a NZ thing, nothing better than a good pie with some Watties tomato sauce!
Ari Hutchins Even the packet pies at the dairy are better than Aussie bakery pies haha
Just visited NZ and the pies were discovered after seeing them everywhere and wished we'd purchased more of them. Delish! The tomato sauce is disgustingly too sugary. But perhaps it's what kiwis were raised on. I preferred pies without that sweet stuff. We got 3 diff pies at one grocery store for breakfast. As we drove off gobbling the pies, we were uuhhhing and awwwwhing and slurping, then we tried the mussel meat pie...bad news! It was SO slimy fishy ...old fishy taste we were throwing up on the car rental. Had to roll down windows to get fresh air. These pies was still warmed from oven, so hot (old) fishy mussel pie, I would NOT recommend. EVER. :) All other meat pies: Lamb, Beef are yummy to the tummy!!!
yip avoid the seafood pies they can be a real hit or miss. Steak and Cheese pies plain and simple but bloody delish.
@@michellepernula872 im from nz and prefer my pies without tomatoe sauce but instead with a cup of tea and dont really care if its aus or nz pie still damn good also you must try a hangi pie or watercress and pork pie delishes
They're defiantly? I think you meant definitely unless you meant defiantly but that'd be weird lol
They look delicious!
They were!
The Ned Kelly pie is another classic Aussie pie . It is a beef & bacon pie with a whole egg cracked on top and sometimes topped with cheddar cheese. There are many good recipes for them on the net.
Looks interesting, it's on my list!
Love Aussie accent! Go for it! Awesome recipe!
Thanks
hi keef this is keeff just made these pies so good thanks keep up the good work nice one
Hey, thanks!
Im an aussie who loves a good meat pie, i have em on my work breaks nearly all the time, but never heard of just the beef and cheese pie ahah. I might have to give em a try
Go for it!
I gasped out loud as my eyes alighted upon those beauties in the thumbnail photo. Great job. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Grilled cheese and mince on toast is huge in South Africa.... Really delicious...
+seanonel Never heard of that - sounds terrific!
I couldn't care less which country ''owns'' the recipe for this, but they taste amazing! Thanks a lot, sir!
RIGHT ON!
Stories with origins of food make it more appealing and you need to use the ingredients from those regions to be authentic. So the comment is kinda rude. These were used along with jerky and crackers for cowboys because the foods don't spoil and transport better.
Rude?Seriously? What a joke. So sick of idiots getting offended over everything. How's that for rude?
Right we're all just here to enjoy food
shut up, put your big boy pants on, what a clown, @@michellepernula872
This is remind me of the Georgie Pie back in the 1990s in here New Zealand. Sadly the company got bank-rub. But the pie was so good. Now they have it at McDonald but it not the same anymore. Thanks for the video.
Greetings from the US. I really enjoy watching your videos as they are a great diversion from the chaos here since the unfortunate election of the current president. I am definitely going to try to make these delicious looking pies and I loved learning the very versatile pie crust recipe.
