  • A short Documentary based in birmingham,with the aim to raise awareness and give a deeper understanding of what it is like to be homeless in birmingham from the people themselves and the people who are out fighting the war on homelessness

    I always tell my daughter to never look down on a person, because you have no idea what has happened to them. Also, it could happen to you, they are human beings, and never lose your humanity.

    Just to let you know I've got into rehab/supported accommodation and got myself of drink and drugs
    3 weeks into it and things are looking up ..just wanted to pass on a bit of encouragement to anyone else out there struggling, if I can do it they can do it.

    This broke my heart. I live in birmingham and i cant believe people are living like this round the corner from me i went to the shop and bought every day items and handed them out. There smiles were the most heart warming things ever

      Totally agree, While i was filming this documentary i came to realise that if it wasn't for the members of the public and the voluntary groups that hand out clothes and warm food these people would be in a much worse circumstance, THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE CASE IN A 1ST WORLD COUNTRY

      @brass monkey you have limited to no knowledge and are showing your ignorance. I can assure you that most voluntary workers do have jobs and do this work to help out their community in crisis. Remember that not only do they give their time for free, they use their cars incurring wear and tear, fuel costs plus damage to their vehicles. Put their own hand in their own pockets to help others. Also sacrifice their quality time with their families to help. Without such kind hearted souls many people would go without food in their bellies and clothes on their backs if these lovely people did not help.

    Sad to say this country is going downhill. Back in the 80's and 90's you'll rarely see homeless people, but now there are so many. Breaks my heart.

    I cant pass a homeless person without giving my last bit of change or buying them some hot food or drink, it kills me to see people like this makes me feel sad that I'm going to a home with the heating on and a full meal, I wish I had a massive mansion so I could move all the homeless in and look after all of them, the world getting worse until our Lord returns it wont get better but until then keep smiling and love one of another ❤

      Most people aren’t just homeless and that’s it - the people sleeping on the streets are usually either alcoholics or drug addicts or violent, they fall into one of those three categories so you could take them in but all your shit would be gone and sold for drink and drugs within the first few hours, nice gesture and nice idea but not realistic even if you did have a mansion

    Bigups to the people who have made this documentary, i am from Birmingham and driving around I have seen a couple of homeless people shown on this documentary, it has really opened up my eyes on the issue, and i think more awareness on the topic will hopefully improve the situation for these people.

    I was homeless for a short time due to breakup and job loss , it was soul destroying. I turned it around by going away to work and living in , it was the best thing I ever done . I never walk past a person on the streets , allways but hot drinks food etc , talk to them .

    I was once stopped by a PSCO giving some money to homeless in Wolverhampton. He asked what i was doing i told what i do with my money has nothing to do with him and to basically mind his own business, he was none too happy, asking me for details, and eventually calling a Real Policeman who upon explaining that i was giving my cash of my own free will, told the PCSO to walk on.

    Sad in this day in age that our own UK citizens are left like this..it can happen to any of us.I been homeless twice but never ended up on the street..These people are warriors...as I sleep in my bed tonight warm and safe my heart goes out to them.

      Printing more money reduces its economic value. It's not nice to see homelessness, and i wish the answer was just people giving more money to them but like all problems it's multifaceted.

    Hard to believe in 2021, people still live like this, it's heartbreaking and disgusting, the government have a lot to answer for. How can someone that has served this country, be treated so badly 😔. Where I live ( Sheffield) it's pretty apparent the people that are suffering and those that aren't, never see a homeless Roma🤷🏾‍♀️.

    Very good Documentary. Feel a deep sorrow for anyone in a position like this. People who speak bad about the homeless ain't got no right to judge or say anything if they haven't got a clue what it is like to experience homelessness.

    that woman in the pompom hat with the blanket conned me and upset my child !!!! she had £30 off me for a supposed hostel then i saw her hand it to a man in exchange for something being passed to her. i had £60 odd left until i got paid on the friday. i work and cant afford luxuries, that money was from my heart. someone actually told me she has a flat and a bus driver told me she lives in a high rise, gets the bus into town every day to beg for drug money. wont be conned again!!!!

      So true. Only if someone has run away from a parent who's repeatedly raped them before falling prey to strangers who've raped them and then ended up on the streets out of fear of people can they turn around and judge someone who doesn't seem happy with having a house and that's all.

    The only person who can help you is yourself, the willingness to try, to change, I was homeless few years back was lazy, committed crime, went to prison, sat in my cell one evening looked out the window, seen the yard couple trees and a patch of grass, I looked up seen the stars my Mind went to a place I’ve never witnessed, was a stare into the unknown, I sat back down and realised there’s a whole world out there to explore, 3 years on from my release baring in mind left with nothing or nobody, I have a nice house with my girlfriend, I have a job, a nice car, I’m saving money, where as before I couldn’t. I have responsibilities to cook, clean, provide. All I’m saying is don’t give up. Keep trying cause when you finally achieve it’s the best feeling in the world.. god bless you all, it remember it’s down to you.

      @Andy H you start with yourself, your mind, your strength to change? Drug rehabilitation, Alcoholics Anonymous go to the council sign up for housing, change your appearance, look smart, speak with a sense of enthusiasm, if people see your committed more opportunities will arise. Take a step at a time, don’t associate with people who don’t want to change, if you associate with millionaires you’ll become one, associate with drug takers and criminals you’ll become just that!

      Thanks for sharing your story. I have the privilege of knowing someone like you.
      A foster child who slipped through the system thanks to foster parents only interested in the money. Lived his teenage years on the streets. Did some time in prison and was released back to the streets.
      But he did something about it.
      Now he gets the mental health care he needed all along and with the correct meds he now has a full time job, a home and a lovely girlfriend.
      It wasn't easy for him - but he did it and I am so proud of him.

    As someone that came from the streets of Birmingham city centre myself 16 years ago the soup run and fireside kept me going bk then, bham was good to me! Drugline helped me alot too! Iv been clean from class a drugs for 15 years now there is hope 💞 Si 😱its good to see you still around all this time later so many have been lost along the way 💞

    My heart breaks for all those homeless.that poor man in a wheelchair should be in a nice warm home, no one should turn their backs on these poor people.the way I look at it they could be my son or daughter.god help them all and look after them.xx Tina Ireland.

    I hear that: "Carers" & Helpers just want you to do what they want" - When I was trying to recover from my Stroke in Hospital, staff only did as little as possible that is convenient to them. Since Feb. 2018, nobody has given a toss about me or even asked me what I want, or what I know is best for me.

    Thank you for creating this .. a topic that always needs to be addressed. I hope the last man finds the courage to continue building his life. My services are offers to all who requires help and guidance with getting back to work and reforming the basics. Building a cv etc and taking steps to a life of living for the shadowed members of the community.

    I always talk to the homeless, well I used to anyway before covid, haven't been out in months but they're still people. Don't get me wrong some can be nasty people but that doesn't mean all homeless people deserve to get tared with the same brush. I was homeless at 17 until i was 19 because stupid mistakes I made when I was younger involving drugs. Out of all the homeless people I've met maybe 10% were horrible junkies, but the rest were normal people, just in a bad place in their life.... So sad that these people get looked at the way they do.

    Give these guys rooms in one of the disbanded Army barracks with some support to finds jobs or retrain for a new career. Give them a safe place. Support with addiction if needed. Instead of giving this accomodations to refugee's that burn down these accomodations. The homeless veterans would thrive appreciate it.

    Plenty of provision in Birmingham. It's largely other issues such as addiction with drugs and alcohol and mental health which infringes people's ability to access the help.
    Eg can you abide by the rules of the accommodation offered? If you had a flat eventually can you run and maintain it and pay bills and rent if you have significant addiction issues and or mental health issues alongside that.

      No one chooses to be on street. People often have addiction problems and or mental health issues. Lack of family support . We need to have a holistic approach to solving homelessness. And it starts with compassion.

    I'm sorry, but these people need to help themselves too, I know it's not always the case, but a lot of these, no matter how much you help them, they'll just take the help, but not put any of their own motivation in, so when the help stops, instead of carrying on with good progress, they just go straight back to the street... and before people chip in from what I say, I know a few of these people here, some deserve the help, some don't...

    Birmingham gives alot of support to homeless ppl , plenty of hostels and shelters in city center.

      Some don’t feel safe in hostels. Some feel safer on the street. Also, hostels are temporary and some kick them out after a day.

    It is do sad to see,we are supposed to be a developed country.Yet human beings are left to live on the street like stray dogs,but the difference is,a stray dog would be put into kennels and given something to eat and made comfortable.
    It is all so wrong,our government is rubbish and corrupt, having one goal and that is to look after themselves.

      They aren't left to live on the streets, they have refused to be housed, have drink our drug issues they are not willing to deal with or have been struck off the council housing list because they vandalsed the property or were anti social neighbours.

    We should always respect homeless people they are in this situation it's not their fault sometimes circumstances in life put these people in these positions. I always take time out & speak to the homeless & you would be surprised where they come from. Always help & respect them. 💯👍

      ⁠@@towaritchthe streets are an institution for many. A lot do not trust people and no wonder. A lot have troubled backgrounds fleeing from abuse then became addicts. Trace back their ancestry and there will be issues such as crime, died in on battlefields and the workhouse for some of them. Those issues do not just leave generations in so many cases. All this is hypothetical but it will be there for some. Its spiritual healing this country needs along with true financial support and education. Proper financial education and a huge rental and cost of living decrease. Better wages etc too.

    I'm a Dutchman and in May 2017 I was having a holiday in Birmingham for the 1st time. I was staying at a hotel in the New Street very near the station. And I was quite shocked seeing so many homeless people/drug addicts in the surroundings!

    I had no mum or dad, grew up in poverty, bullied at school, my brother committed suicide, I was sexually abused as a child but I got on with my life and moved on and worked hard to better myself. you either live in a world of shit or you take ownership for yourself and make it happen for you, no one gives you nothing you make it for yourself. thank you.

    This is such a difficult thing, I’ve spoken to and helped many homeless individuals over the years. I never give money only buy food and talk to them. I’ve met some really nice people..But recently I was followed out of a supermarket across two streets by a guy begging for money. As a woman walking alone at night this was so scary. There’s a fine line between asking for help and intimidation.

      i get that, a homeless shelter was quickly assembled right across the street from my apartment building a couple years ago in Canada, and the ones living there continue to do drugs and alcohol, even though rehab services is also made available to them, they accept the room, warm bed and meals but refuse any form of detox therapy, which is why security guards are in duty there around the clock!!! they don't need housing they need to be institutionalized!!!!!

    We should plant native fruit trees in public parks, unoccupied urban areas, poor neighborhoods and schools to promote healthy eating and provide at least a snack to those in need. I understand this solution will take time but nature just need a seed and few days of care and rest it will take care of.
    You can watch a video on how to plant a local fruit tree using a seed. Even if 1 out of your 10 trees survives, it will feed many generations. Think about it. Take action...
