Damasko: A Look Inside the Manufacture

  • Just fifteen minutes by car from Regensburg, Germany, the bustling capital of Bavaria, you’ll find Barbing. This wooded area is not all too different in appearance from upstate New York, despite being a continent away. Large fields studded by small structures line either side of the road when there’s a break in the trees. In the mornings in October, the fog is so thick you can’t see more than a few feet ahead, and there is a pleasant if not slightly-sharp chill in the air.
    Tucked away on one of the many understated side roads is a long, single-story, white building with a pitched roof. There’s nothing flashy about it, and nothing to tell you that inside raw materials are transformed into complex machines. Machines that, despite their understated appearances, are some of the most technology packed in their industry.

    The data contained in this video combined with Konrad Damsko’s description of his watchmaking vision presents a compelling case for considering the purchase of a Damasko watch when one is looking for a tool watch or a watch of great sturdiness. Much watch advertising and promotion (I.e. celebrity ambassadors, sports tie ins, yacht racing teams) is a total waste. Hearing the story of a brand and its mission from its founder and some of its employees is immeasurably superior to normal brand advertising and promotion. My major takeaways were Damasko’s use of silicon including silicon mainsprings and its use of hardened stainless steel.

    You buy a wristwatch as a young man, it is your companion for life, you wear it until the day you die. This is why durability is important.

    I love the 3 Damasko watches that I currently own! They are very accurate, they are very rugged and they are in mint condition, even after several months/years of more or less non-stop use. All my other watches show battle scars, whereas the Damasko pieces are still in pristine condition. The only drawback is the quality of the lume - if Damasko would start using C3 or BGW9 Superluminova, their watches would be pretty much perfect.

    I am from Malaysia and I purchased one of the DK30s with the new A26 today. Great respect to Mr. Konrad Damasko and others for their strong stance of "Solid, honest German watch."
    This is THE watch that you should be "looking after it for the next generation."

    Thanks for shining the spotlight on this amazing, no-nonsense and family owned company! Damasko is what Sinn often pretends to be - hands down. With a fraction of most brands assets, they achieved so much.

    Thanks for that awesome video! I love the brand. I hope that they will soon emerge from the shadows of Sinn, for which they have previously made cases and more... They deserve a lot more attention and as Sinn watches are getting more and more expensive there is an open gap for Damasko and their imho better value for money. I love Sinn as well but Damasko really starts growing on me. Weiter so!
    Beste Grüße aus dem deutschen Süden =)

    Great video. I've had my Damasko DA36 for 7 years and I can testify that the case looks the same as the day as I bought it. I've changed the strap, that's all. It was my daily wear for five of those years and now shares its time with my latest acquisition. It's great to see where it was made.

    The build quality of Damasko watches and the technology that goes into them is a phenomenal value at a very reasonable price compared to competing brands. In a world full of hype and superficial fads, Damasko' is making solid, honest, high-performance timepieces that will last a lifetime and won't break the bank. It's a perfect marriage of old-fashioned values and state-of-the-art technology, of function and form.

    This is some of the best marketing I have seen for a watch company. I absolutely love Damasko's philosophy and their dedication to creating truly useable and durable timepieces, now even producing their own calibers. I have been searching for an automatic tool watch from some time, considering the omega railmaster, rolex explorer, a number of seikos along with several other swiss and german brands, but I eventually settled on Damasko. I believe this watch will likely outlast me.

    I just love these German watches like Damasko and Sinn where the aesthetics, to a large degree, is the result of function. But why create in-house movements when there are time tested, solid, super precise calibres that any skilled watchmaker can service and repair? With in-house movements nothing gets better as long as Damasko don’t make spare parts freely available. For this reason I prefer Sinn!

    • @simeon2148
      @simeon2148 Před 2 lety

      The "time tested, solid, super precise calibres" (mainly ETA2824, ETA 2892 and their clones) are 40-50 years old designs and were built to a price point - e.g. to be cheap and easy to make. For instance ETA2824 and its clone Sellita SW200-1 is the most widely used movement in the simple automatic watches and has known issues when hand winding. But neither ETA, nor Sellita actually addressed the issue with a working solution. The Damasko caliber A26-2 is an upgrade of the ETA2824 design, correcting its flaws and even improving it. This is something the swiss should have done decades ago, not selling the same old caliber over and over again.

    Damasko, nie wieder! Ich hatte mir im Frühjahr 2022 eine Damasko DC 57, €2.425 zugelegt. Nach dem Wechsel von Leder auf Metall, musste ich schon eine blanke Stelle erkennen. Laut Damasko, keine Garantie. Da ich mehrere Uhren habe und sehr sehr sorfältig mit den Uhren umgehe, traute ich meinen Augen nicht. Das Armband €770 hatte nach 5 Tagen schon blanke Stellen, das Armband ist kaum zu öffnen, keine Garantie. Polieren von Uhr und Armband kostet über €100.
