    Daytripper was the 2nd comic book that i read in my life. Until today i haven't found a book that moves me in that way. Every single comic book that i read is nonless compared to that comic book. I should have read it after reading some other comics, because now i can't read the same way. Everyone should read daytripper!

    Sandman is definitely an experience. I love death in it, and many of the characters leave a lasting impact. The man he meets in a tavern with his sister, his raven... This is the one series that I will forever hold in my heart. I love Sandman and Niel Gaiman.

    Sandman was a great choice. Easily my fav comic ever. You showed my second fav as well and I'm very interested in Daytripper. Might pick it up today. My list would be:
    Sandman
    East of West
    Locke and Key
    Transmetropolitan
    Saga (book 1, book 2 made me drop the series)
    Crossed (specifically book 3)
    I hate fairyland
    Rat Queens
    Colder (I loved the way they portrayed insanity)
    Sky.Doll (look up the art you will most likely buy it right away)

      @NearMintCondition  Před 6 lety

      I'm going to have to check out Sky Doll. I looked at the art and its up my alley. For sure . Crossed gets a lot of love and it's twisted as hell.

      @babylonshadows1877 Před 6 lety

      Near Mint Condition Sky.Doll is unique as hell. And regarding Crossed, I feel like the series is extremely good but suffers from the same problem as Berserk. Most people just see the tits and gore and disregard the actual narrative. I forget which volume had it but theres a story about a band of brothers trying to reach a nuclear plant and (spoilers) the leader ends up killing the other 3 to make sure they wouldn't have to suffer and proceeded to take on the whole sea of crossed on his own. Died like a boss.

And if you've seen the movie and didn't like it you probably won't like the graphic novel but vice versa. It's better than the movie IMO.

  • @lloydwong7852
    @lloydwong7852 Před 6 lety +3

    I just came from part one of the video. I never got a notification that you left a comment.
    I may be in the minority but I finished Y the last Man and just felt meh. I just seem to lose interest when I read anything of his. I wanted to like this and even went out to pick up the collected trades but ended up giving them to a friend after I was done. I still have a few of Brubakers Image works I need to read but I would have chosen Sleeper instead of Criminal just because that was the start of the Brubaker/Phillips collaboration. Daytripper.....Where do I even start. That hit me so much personally. You already know how I feel about Lazarus! SiP is so good!I will say at times it feels like I'm in a soap opera when I read it but it made me see there were comic books out there that weren't superheroes. I I love that Terry Moore even brought back SiP back for an anniversary that has a collected first tpb coming or already out.Sin City and Sandman were books I read back in my days in Art College I haven't read them in a while because I purged a lot of my collection years ago but My nostalgia may have me one day wanting to revisit these series. Locke and Key and Uncle Scrooge and Donald are the only two I have never gotten to read yet but want to.
    The only books I would have added were Scalped-Jason Aaron, Punk Rock Jesus-Sean Gordon Murphy, and Midnight Nation-JMS/Gary Frank. Midnight Nation is less Daytripper with a bunch of Supernatural sprinkled in. You appreciate it more when you read his afterward. and the deluxe hc looks to be available at IST still;) I would have added Sweet Tooth too but that book is just a personal favourite of mine and know how you feel about Lemire's art.
    This is just a big run-on sentence but I was commenting as you listed books..lol

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  Před 6 lety

      I've heard other people feel Meh about Y. I get it, but to me it's a beautiful series. Sleeper was great and honestly it was my second choice, but I think Criminal was better all around. I'd love to know what you think about Locke and Key and Uncle Scrooge when you get the chance to read them. I think I'm one of the few people that wasn't blown away by Scalped. I just didn't like most of the characters and therefore didn't care what happened to them. I did dig that ending and the art was amazing. I agree, I loved Sweet Tooth (even though for some reason the ending felt a little rushed). I have to go back and reread JMS' Midnight Nation. That's a book that I've only read once.

    I do agree there SimCity was deafening experience you had to read to really feel how great this body of work that Frank Miller wrote intro cuz the movie does it justice but doesn't really do it fully Justice and what the the graphic novel die. Sin City was definitely hard-hitting breathtaking and Visually stunning from accretive stamp are you just amazing this was a great

    Great video. Lazarus is a great pick, very underrated book. Lazarus has a lot of well written characters so does East of West, both great books in their own right. Great to see Criminal by Ed Brubaker on the list, it was my first indie comic I picked up years ago when it first came out. I was reading Daredevil and Iron Fist by Brubaker in single issues when they were coming out and I picked up the Criminal deluxe edition because of Brubaker's writing. I found your channel because I love the X-men and I saw your X-men omnibus collection video. Do more indie videos in the future. Horror comics would be cool, especially since Halloween is around the corner. Do Eerie comics, I never read those before. You sold me on Strangers in Paradise. Also, get Gem Mint Collectibles on Omnibros, that would be awesome.

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  Před 6 lety

      I cannot wait for more ad more Lazarus, I know he has an ending planned, but I'm ready for it. Criminal is my favorite Brubaker and Phillips book and they've done alot, so that's saying something. I really like the idea of horror comics. For Halloween, I think I will do that. I'm glad you are checking out Strangers...it's such a beautiful series. I don't really have a say who we can have on the Omnibros show since I'm the one that got the invite, but based on Gem's huge following, maybe we should be on his show. We have talked about doing a crossover episode with him, I'm not sure when though. :)

I haven't read Strangers in Paradise or any of Don Rosa's Disney comics, but I'm definitely interested in checking them out now. My top twenty would probably have a few that yours didn't, like The Filth by Grant Morrison and Chris Weston, From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, Stray Bullets by David Lapham, Lucifer by Mike Carey and Peter Gross and Dean Ormston, and East of West by Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta.

    @RaytheMagician Před 6 lety +2

    Hey, hey! My man! Great picks to finish off your list, Omar! Many great choices. I predicted "Sandman" had to be on the list somewhere. It's too iconic NOT to include. That, and "Y, The Last Man". Brian K. Vaughan is the MAN! (No pun intended!)
    But, since you suggested it at the end of the video, here's some titles I would have included. I'll be curious to see if you've read any of these:
    1. "BMW: The Hire" : This was a limited series comic that was collected into a trade. It's a follow-up to a series of short films that BMW did to advertise their latest line of vehicles back in 2001. Each film was by a famous director, such as Tony Scott, John Woo, John Frankenheimer, Guy Ritchie and others. And they all featured the same character, a driver for hire played by Clive Owen. This comic was a new series of stories about the same character.
    2. "Get Jiro!" : This was a graphic novel written by the late Anthony Bourdain! It takes place in a future Los Angeles where cooks and chefs have become the biggest crime lords to drive the economy. It's the story of a sushi chef named Jiro who is caught in the middle of two warring factions: The Internationalists, who collect food from all over the world, for the highest paying elite and the Vertical Farmers, who focus on only macrobiotic, organic and vegetarian dishes. It's a searing black satire on foodie culture, well written and Langdon Foss's illustrations are so memorable!
    3. "The Red Star": Christian Gossett, who came up with concepts for Lucasfilm such as the double-bladed lightsaber that Darth Maul used, is the writer of this series about an alternate sci-fi series about the Russian Red Army. VERY well written!
    4. "King": Ho Che Anderson wrote and illustrated this 3-part (later collected into an ultimate edition) bio-comic about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The writing alone for this comic is worth it. And the illustrations feature a variety of styles such as photo imagery, wood cuts, black and white drawings, silk-screening, all of it to tell a very critical and balanced look at the life of the civil rights leader. It showed that he was both a brilliant and flawed man at the same time. Plus, it's very well researched. I cannot recommend this one enough.
    5. Dude, how could you not include "DMZ" by Brian Wood?
    6. "Zahra's Paradise": This is a story that is centered around the protests of the 2009 presidential election in the Islamic Republic of Iran. A mother is looking for her missing son, and during the search learns more about him as a revolutionary. It's also a look into the socio-political culture of the country at the time, and it's a pretty damning indictment of the Iranian government. Again, highly recommended.
    Hope this gives more food for thought! Again, awesome show, my brother!

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  Před 6 lety

      Ray, my man...don't kill me. I didn't like DMZ. I had the first three HCs and I sold them. Wood didn't do it for me in that series. Saying that I'm going to pick up Get jiro and The Red Star those sound so awesome.

    I grew up on non-super hero comics in the 80s because I am British and we have a weekly anthology comic called 2000AD which has some of the greatest graphical stories ever told and many of the European writers and artists you love cut their teeth on 2000AD. Here is a list of some of the greatest comics which can be found in collected editions from this publication.
    First probably the best thing Alan Moore ever wrote is little known and sadly incomplete. The Ballad of Halo Jones with some jaw dropping art by Ian Gibson.
    The best thing 2000AD is known for outside the UK is old stone face himself Judge Dredd. Because he ages in real time he is in his late 60s and has been in almost every issue since 1977 there is a lot stories and I will list some of my favourites.-
    His first epic Dredd story was Block Mania and Apocalypse War which ran 1981/82 and still holds up today, especially Block Mania.
    Everyone’s recommendation as an intro to Judge Dredd is ‘America’ which I like but I’m not as fond as others about.
    I think there is nothing better to get in to a story about law and order than a procedural and I personally think the best jumping off point in to the world of Dredd is ‘The Pit’
    My favourite character from the world of Dredd is the anti-establishment graffiti artist who went on to become the world’s greatest sky surfer, Chopper and my favourite chopper story is Song of the surfer. The art is phenomenal and the story is pure tragedy.
    Moving away from the future to the ancient past we have Slaine and the story The horned God. In this work Simon Bisley produced the Sistene Chapel of comic book art and I challenge anyone to disagree.
    One of my favourite series in 2000AD is Bad Company. A trippy, hard edged journey into a future interpretation of the Vietnam War.
    Finally I recommend Button Man, only volumes 1-3 though. Hard as nails and British as hell.
    Honourable mention goes to Nemesis the warlock which has just been great throughout its history and I cannot pick a one story above any other. All you need to know is the hero is like the devil and the villains are the humans.

    Hi Omar! I have just re-watched your 2 video's of your favourite non super hero graphic novels and you have covered what I consider to be the greatest books in this format ever published! However, I tend to look at a lot of obscure, independent or small publisher's books which do this genre justice also! Through the years, along with the books you have covered, I have come across a few really fab graphic novels I thought I would mention to you. Maybe you will wanna check em out for yourself! These are my recommendations of non super hero books, STRANGEHAVEN by Gary Spencer Millidge. GRANDVILLE by Brian Talbot. A Distant Neighbourhood by Jiro Taniguchi, HICKSVILLE by Dylan Horrocks & It's a Good Life, if you Don't Weaken by SETH. I think you would absolutely love these suggestions. Just thought I would mention these classics! I was kinda hoping that PLANETARY by Warren Ellis would have made your list as that was one of my favourites. One thing that always confuses me a bit- why give the name of a graphic novel to a collecfed series or a trade?
    Surely graphic novel implies a one off work that runs for a specific number of pages, which even though might be arranged in chapters just as a prose novel, is conceptualized and produced with the single tome format in mind.

    • @NearMintCondition
      @NearMintCondition  Před rokem

      Around 2004 and 2005 the term Graphic Novel changed due to book stores wanting to carry more "comics" and I guess the term Graphic novel sounds better to book stores than Comics or Collected Editions. So that's why they are refered to as Graphic Novels now.

    Everything you showed looked like a great suggestion and there were many I don't have, so I'll be on the lookout for those. I'd mention a few you didn't: Xenozoic Tales by Mark Schultz, American Splendor by Harvey Pekar, Scout, Grim Jack, by Tim Truman, Black Dragon by John Bolton, Concrete by Paul Chadwick although that might be considered a super hero title, Kings in Disguise by James Vance, which Alan Moore said was an amazing title, Moonshadow, a coming of age story, Eightball by Daniel Clowes, Yummy Fur, Fuck, & I Never Liked You, and most anything by Chester Brown, I prefer his auto bio stuff, Clyde Fans and Palookaville by Seth, Peepshow by Joe Matt, Brat Pack & The One by Rick Veitch, Stuck Rubber Baby by Howard Cruise, The Tower by Schuiten & Peeters, and The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane. Great job on this list. Personally, I don't read too many graphic novels, though the most provocative one I've read recently is Come Again by Nate Powell. Actually, I was hoping you could help me identify this one graphic novel I skimmed a few years back.
    I've been obsessed with finding it after all this time, but it's eluded all my attempts to look it up online.
    The thing is, I don't remember it's name, author, or publication date; all I have is a vague memory of the plot.
    Without spoiling it too much (I heard you hate spoilers), here's the premise:
    The protagonist is a seemly ordinary family man with a mustache whose only son vanishes without a trace at a carnival. Years later, he seems to be only one in his family to have moved on, though he seems to cope by interacting with imaginary characters. Through a series of events, he's thrown into this large pit and he and his daughter find themselves in some sort of fantasy world. One other element I remember is that the son's "disappearance" has something to do with developing a telepathic connection to a mammoth.
    Does that sound familiar to you or anyone else? I'll owe you big time if you can help me.

    You know when the special agent told him not to do this he would do one thing I keep on forgetting the character's name in the book that's my bad I got to look back it's been awhile since I've read that series I got to go back and read it again it's been a long time but you would just do some things that were like life-risking it's like you're the last man dude you need to chill out and up until we got the desert point that he wasn't. He can't be taking those types of risks. I mean it was enjoyable to read it and I was like also part of his charm it's like a 50/50 thing with the deleting character that's those are probably the two problems I had really with the series but I don't know it was like definitely a 9.5 on my but it was it was damn near close at 10 but it was just those problems I really had with the series that I still really enjoyed it I thought that this was up there. Did you enjoy Love and Rockets? Most people seem to love that series better, but I just couldn't get into it.
