As a Khmer speaker, I would like to say thank you so much that you show my native script to the world. For me, I know every well the history of Khmer and Thai languages, also the script. I don’t mind. It’s normal that one script can be used to write many languages like Latin alphabet. I also learned English and French. Before leaning both languages, I got confused because both languages use the same alphabet, the same font, and some the same words. But when we come to grammar and pronunciation, English and French are very different. The same thing happened to Khmer and Thai language. This clip is about linguistic. I’m so sad that some people comment very badly, involving politics and nationalism. Please ignore those comments. Keep doing the right job.
The problem is whenever Claimbodia sees anything created by Thai like a Yant created by a Thai monk that happens to have a Thai-Khom script in it, they assume it's belong to Claimbodia and accuse Thai of stealing. The channel owner said it clearly in the 1st clip, he received many hatreds from Claimbodia after releasing the Thai-Yant clip.

For people who are not aware. The reason the topic is controverial for Cambodians and some Thais is because it has to do with identity politics. Essentially we have two (or more) versions of history. It goes back quite a bit, but the event that is the main point of contention is the death of Jayavarman IX and ascension of Trasak Paem to the throne of Angkor. The point that is not contested is that Trasak Paem was a Khmer commoner before becoming king. Cambodians revere him as a legendary king. Thais on the other hand look on him with a dregree of indifference if not scorn. - The Khmer version is that Jayavarman IX died in an accidental death at the hands of Trasak Paem, a humble farmer. With no suitable heirs, Trasak Paem was asked to ascend the throne in his place and married Jayavarman's daughter. There's mythical elements to the story giving him semi-divine origins and suitablilty for kingship. - The Thai version is that Jayavarmen IX was assassinated by Trasak Paem in a rebellion and Trasak Paem seized the throne. For Cambodians the change from Jayavarman IX to Trasak Paem represents a change in dynasties, but a continuation of Khmer rulers. For Thais there's added elements. To Thais, Jayavarman IX was the last of the Varman Dynasty who were ethnically Khom and related to Mon-Thais whether by origin or through marriage. Khmers being serfs or even slaves under the rule of Khom royals. So to Thais, Trasak Paem was a ursurper. Thais of Ayutthaya used this reasoning to sucede from the Khom/Khmer Empire arguing that their alliance was with the Varman Dyanasty and did not recognise Trasak Paem's Dynasty. Khmer/Cambodians saw this as Thais rebelling against the Khmer Empire. So there's the debate whether Khom was the same people as Khmer or not. Cambodians would say they are the same and Cambodians are their decendants. Most Thais don't care enough to dispute this, but there are the more nationalistic ones who would assert that Khom were a different ethnic group, Khom being the upper class and Khmer being the lower class, not too dissimilar to the Normans ruling over Anglo-Saxons in Britain. Thais angered by Cambodians trying to claim Khmer originated Thai culture would assert that Khom were the mastermind behind the building of Angkorian temples with help of Indian architects and craftsmen, Khmer being used as only common labourers if not slaves. The French being unaware of this assumed there was only Khmer and attributed the Khom Empire incorrectly to Khmer. The French once remarking themselves that the Khmer didn't seem capable of building Angkor Wat... That's the snippet of it. With things kicking off for that past few years with there seeming to be concerted efforts by Cambodians netizens in claiming Khmers as being the originators of many iconic aspects of Thai culture, from claiming Ramakien/Khon masked dance as copied from ancient khmer masked dance, that Thai Traditional dress was copied from ancient Khmer dress and Muaythai being derived from Cambodian Bokator and/or Kun Khmer. You'll see Cambodians calling Thailand "Theifland" because they believe Thais "stole" Khmer culture and lands. You'll see Thais calling Cambodians "Claimbodians" because Thais believe Cambodians are claiming to be the originators of everything Thai with no real evidence to back it up.
I'm glad you have put this here. Sadly, getting into something like being able to read Thai in the Khmer script ultimately leads down this rabbit hole. I hope people will read your summary here.

Researching ancient Thai and Khmer costumes I came across the disputes about tradition dress. Wanted to use Sak-Yant as a template for the Naga/Snakemen's magical script. Studying Sak-Yant led me to your videos. So yeah fell down the rabbit hole 😅
Khmers are naturally, spiritual people. We've had a history that's been plagued with a lot of trauma... both Thailand and Vietnam being the two dominant neighbors trying to squeeze the life out of cambodia and always attempting to push a false historical narrative in regards to land, culture, arts, literature, everything... khmers have strong, ancient, spiritual lineage flowing through our veins. You cannot erase ancestral memories. Whenever khmers react "badly" to thai comments is because we know you are lying and trying to control the narrative in regards to my culture, your culture, our cultures. It's an instinctive reactionary form that's being taken as aggressive and ultra nationalistic.

Of course Khmer do not read or write Khom Thai Script. what we care about are the basic modern Khmer consonants and the 9 vowels are really Khmer letters. So far I know him who could speak and write fluently about 16 languages but if we say only speaking not completely fluently about 30 languages since 2014. By now I don't really know how many languages he is able to speak and write 😂.
Once again, you did a very good job. Many countries have similar alphabets but they don’t seem to accuse anyone of stealing their own language like Khmer do. Education is very important indeed!
Other people don't put the word 'Thai' in front of everything. They give credits where it is due. Khmer does not mind that Thai use Khmer alphabets with minor modification to accentuate the low and high tone.
@@phugjung Khmer is original like other Hindu communities. Here's a lesson on Hinduism. It's a pluralistic religion. The Brahmans spread the teachings to different regions. Each region was responsible to create Hinduism in their own likeness, style, and etc. Our relationship with India is very long and dates back to 100 B.C. or more. They found Khmer script dating 611 A.D. We had time to learn and develop our own identity in the Hindu world by integrating it into our own indigenous culture. Thai is majority Tai people and migrated from Southern China around 1000 A.D., more than A THOUSAND YEARS AFTER Khmers already established script and art. Thais took the short cut when it comes to ancient culture. If you consider yourself indigenous to the tropical regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia Mainland and Islands, we are all family and we should help each other with real history and not misinformation. Please read research papers. They are out there for us, free and online.
Traditional Khom characters may be used by many groups. No one owns it because it can't be proven. But after the Thai people created Thai characters to create a different identity, The Khmer then claimed ownership of the traditional Khom script. which sets of beliefs were created by the French colonial rulers.

Yep you are right about Khmer Scripts are using today which is the "Khorm" so if you ask us regular people who read all khmer would normally could read "Thai" old script that they call it Khorm Script. Thai letters is the Khmer lower level of Khmer letters, lower letters like you attended school about 12 or 13 years old and then you dropped out of school, you can write lower level just for basic reading and understanding, that's it..

Every day, Cambodians still use both letters. Which Thais call khom. But Khmer can still read and write until now, using both writing methods.

Tai home is further east in the pearl river delta in guangdong. Lingnan region is the homeland for all Tai. Modern day home is Guangxi remaining Tai remnants that resisted assimilation.

As a khmer, this video is very eye opening, I advice both thais and khmers to stop their ultra nationalistic retoric, what is a fact is that Khom is ancient khmer and that the thais adapted it to fit into their own language (like english with latin) Both khmers and thais used Pali which derived from india, in conclusion, Khmers and thais got alot of influnces from india, thais got alot of influnces from khmers, thats history, when you are neighbours,you take influnces from one another, wether it be culture or language, lastly Both khmer and Thai are unique in their own way as languages, filled with history, we should not fight as South east asians we should work together. Thai got influence in script from India and so did Khmer. Khmer did not have much influence on Thai. Don’t think you are the original. Good explanation. This explanation can bring the relationship of Khmer and Thai more better and respect each other by giving each other credit to the authentic’s one( if see the word Khmer or Thai on the explanation just give credit to the owner, don’t claim to be owner without the owner’s information. Example Within the Park is the Phimai Sanctuary, one of the grandest and most important Khmer Historical sites in Thailand.

ผมคนอีสาน การบวชเรียน สมัยก่อนต้องเรียนภาษาขอม ก็คือภาษาธรรมนั่นเอง การอ่านจากใบลาน จะเขียนลงใบลาน ผมอายุ 20 ปีบวชเรียน ปี 2521 เขาเรียนกันมานานแล้ว แต่ช่วงหลังนี้ไม่รู้ว่าเรียนหรือไม่ สรุปง่ายๆ ขอมไม่ใช่เขมร

ส่วนภาษาพูดเขมรเป็นตระกูล Austroasiatic ไม่มีเสียงวรรณยุกต์
จะว่าไปไทย กับเขมรเป็นคนละเผ่าเลย (เพราะภาษาพูดคนละตระกูล) พอเขมรรับภาษาเขียนขอม ก็เลยละทิ้งเครื่องหมายวรรณยุกต์ไป
ภาษาขอม ภาษามอญ ภาษาล้านนาและล้านช้าง การผลิตอักษรจะจัดในตรระกูลดาวิเดียนและมาใช้อักขระวิธี กะ ขะ คะ งะ เป็นตามแบภาษาสันษกฤต ในตระภาษาอินโดอารายัน ส่วนภาษานั่นถูกต้องเลย ตระภาษาปัลลวะ ในกลุ่มตระกูลภาษาดาวิเดียนมีการพัฒนาเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามกาลเวลาจะมีอยู่ในอินเดียใต้ปัจจุบัน แต่ในกลุ่มดาวิเดียนจะมีภาษา ภาษาหนึ่งเรียกว่า ภาษากุอิ มีคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ตรงกับภาษาไทยโบราณ เช่น คำว่า เหย้า = เรือน เฮือน,บ้าน และคำว่า อุ = หม้อน้ำ หม้อดิน แอ่งน้ำ ที่ทำมาจากดินเหนียว คำว่า เขา = ตัวเรา,ผม, ดิฉัน หรือตัวฉัน ใช่คำเรียกตนเอง และอื่นๆ ซึ่งภาษาในตระกูลดาวิเดียนจะมี 20-30 ภาษาเป็นเก่าแก่ที่มีในอินเดีย 3-4 พันปีผ่านมาก่อจะมีภาษาจากอารยันมาผสม กลุ่มภาษาดาวิเดียใจอินเดียใต้ปัจจุบันยังมีอักษรและภาษาพูด เช่น ภาษากันนาดา, ภาษาทมิฬเลียน,ภาษาเตลูกู,โอริยา,มาลายาลัม เป็นต้นภาษาที่ยังไม่ตาย ส่วนภาษา กุอิ, และอื่นๆ อีก 20 กว่าภาษาที่ตายไม่มีอักษรและไม่มีการสื่อสารเหลือแต่ประวัติศาสตร์ทางภาษา ตามหลักภาษาศาสตร์เอเชียที่เคยได้ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ทางภาษา ที่มาที่ในเอเชียจะมีตระภาษาดาวิเดีย และอินโดอารยัน อินโธเบตเทียน ส่วนมากแยกออกตามลักษณ์ภาษที่มีสะ มีวรรณยุกต์ และการผันเสียงนั้น ภาษาไทยจึงอยู่หลุ่มภาษาขร้า ไทกะได เป็นต้น แต่การพัฒนาพยัญชนะ และอักขระ นั่นจะพัฒนามาจากตระกูลภาษาดาวิเดียน (ตัวหนังสือฝักขาม) และผสมกับการใช้อักขระฝันเสียงจากตระกูลภาษาอิโดอารายัน

As a Khmer speaker, I would like to say thank you so much that you show my native script to the world. For me, I know every well the history of Khmer and Thai languages, also the script. I don’t mind. It’s normal that one script can be used to write many languages like Latin alphabet. I also learned English and French. Before leaning both languages, I got confused because both languages use the same alphabet, the same font, and some the same words. But when we come to grammar and pronunciation, English and French are very different. The same thing happened to Khmer and Thai language.

For people who are not aware. The reason the topic is controverial for Cambodians and some Thais is because it has to do with identity politics. Essentially we have two (or more) versions of history. It goes back quite a bit, but the event that is the main point of contention is the death of Jayavarman IX and ascension of Trasak Paem to the throne of Angkor. The point that is not contested is that Trasak Paem was a Khmer commoner before becoming king. Cambodians revere him as a legendary king. Thais on the other hand look on him with a dregree of indifference if not scorn.
- The Khmer version is that Jayavarman IX died in an accidental death at the hands of Trasak Paem, a humble farmer. With no suitable heirs, Trasak Paem was asked to ascend the throne in his place and married Jayavarman's daughter. There's mythical elements to the story giving him semi-divine origins and suitablilty for kingship.
- The Thai version is that Jayavarmen IX was assassinated by Trasak Paem in a rebellion and Trasak Paem seized the throne.
For Cambodians the change from Jayavarman IX to Trasak Paem represents a change in dynasties, but a continuation of Khmer rulers.
For Thais there's added elements. To Thais, Jayavarman IX was the last of the Varman Dynasty who were ethnically Khom and related to Mon-Thais whether by origin or through marriage. Khmers being serfs or even slaves under the rule of Khom royals. So to Thais, Trasak Paem was a ursurper.
Thais of Ayutthaya used this reasoning to sucede from the Khom/Khmer Empire arguing that their alliance was with the Varman Dyanasty and did not recognise Trasak Paem's Dynasty. Khmer/Cambodians saw this as Thais rebelling against the Khmer Empire.
So there's the debate whether Khom was the same people as Khmer or not. Cambodians would say they are the same and Cambodians are their decendants. Most Thais don't care enough to dispute this, but there are the more nationalistic ones who would assert that Khom were a different ethnic group, Khom being the upper class and Khmer being the lower class, not too dissimilar to the Normans ruling over Anglo-Saxons in Britain.
Thais angered by Cambodians trying to claim Khmer originated Thai culture would assert that Khom were the mastermind behind the building of Angkorian temples with help of Indian architects and craftsmen, Khmer being used as only common labourers if not slaves. The French being unaware of this assumed there was only Khmer and attributed the Khom Empire incorrectly to Khmer. The French once remarking themselves that the Khmer didn't seem capable of building Angkor Wat...
That's the snippet of it. With things kicking off for that past few years with there seeming to be concerted efforts by Cambodians netizens in claiming Khmers as being the originators of many iconic aspects of Thai culture, from claiming Ramakien/Khon masked dance as copied from ancient khmer masked dance, that Thai Traditional dress was copied from ancient Khmer dress and Muaythai being derived from Cambodian Bokator and/or Kun Khmer.
You'll see Cambodians calling Thailand "Theifland" because they believe Thais "stole" Khmer culture and lands.
You'll see Thais calling Cambodians "Claimbodians" because Thais believe Cambodians are claiming to be the originators of everything Thai with no real evidence to back it up.
I'm glad you have put this here. Sadly, getting into something like being able to read Thai in the Khmer script ultimately leads down this rabbit hole. I hope people will read your summary here.

We've had a history that's been plagued with a lot of trauma... both Thailand and Vietnam being the two dominant neighbors trying to squeeze the life out of cambodia and always attempting to push a false historical narrative in regards to land, culture, arts, literature, everything... khmers have strong, ancient, spiritual lineage flowing through our veins. You cannot erase ancestral memories. Whenever khmers react "badly" to thai comments is because we know you are lying and trying to control the narrative in regards to my culture, your culture, our cultures. It's an instinctive reactionary form that's being taken as aggressive and ultra nationalistic.

Of course Khmer do not read or write Khom Thai Script. what we care about are the basic modern Khmer consonants and the 9 vowels are really Khmer letters. @@phugjung Khmer is original like other Hindu communities. Here's a lesson on Hinduism. It's a pluralistic religion. The Brahmans spread the teachings to different regions. Each region was responsible to create Hinduism in their own likeness, style, and etc. Our relationship with India is very long and dates back to 100 B.C. or more. They found Khmer script dating 611 A.D. We had time to learn and develop our own identity in the Hindu world by integrating it into our own indigenous culture.
Thai is majority Tai people and migrated from Southern China around 1000 A.D., more than A THOUSAND YEARS AFTER Khmers already established script and art.
Thais took the short cut when it comes to ancient culture.
If you consider yourself indigenous to the tropical regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia Mainland and Islands, we are all family and we should help each other with real history and not misinformation. Please read research papers. They are out there for us, free and online.

Ancient Khmer script aka Khom scripts are super difficult to learn. We still using those in our official letter, the same to Pali as well.
Traditional Khom characters may be used by many groups. No one owns it because it can't be proven. But after the Thai people created Thai characters to create a different identity, The Khmer then claimed ownership of the traditional Khom script. which sets of beliefs were created by the French colonial rulers.

Yep you are right about Khmer Scripts are using today which is the "Khorm" so if you ask us regular people who read all khmer would normally could read "Thai" old script that they call it Khorm Script. So Yes we (Khmer" are more ancient in term of writing then Thai new writing. Only that they don't admit it.

Thai letters is the Khmer lower level of Khmer letters, lower letters like you attended school about 12 or 13 years old and then you dropped out of school, you can write lower level just for basic reading and understanding, that's it..

The Sanskrit script was copied and used in Khmer more than 2000 years ago during the funan dynasty of the kundinya, when the Khmer kingdom collapsed in 1300, the Siamese expanded and copied the Khmer script to use it today. Every day, Cambodians still use both letters. Which Thais call khom. But Khmer can still read and write until now, using both writing methods.
Thai clearly misunderstood Mr. Stuart Raj explain about the Khom Thai. Khom is Khmer, so Khom Thai is Khmer Thai using Khom old script many years to write or adapted to Thai language to suite their accents like he said. So, listen carefully to what’s saying, some Thai didn’t get his explanation how Thai using Khmer Khom to invent their Thai languages just like English using Latin to write English.

Thai got influence in script from India and so did Khmer. Khmer did not have much influence on Thai. Don’t think you are the original. Historically, the khmer empire were powerful militarily and culturely, the ancient thais were influnced by the khmer empire alot, sokuthai (the first thai kingdom had many khmer influnces and customs) but overtime they evolved into their own unique culture (but history is history, you must acknowledge that thais got alot of influnce from ancient khmers, as i also acknowlege the fact that some of our customs were influnce by thais, just like how most of western europe were infunce by romans)
Secondly, although khmers were put under siamese vassalage we were not colonised, in fact on many occasions we broke from siamese vassalage and at most kept our culture intact
thirdly, i beg you not to make this political, you guys have muay thai we have kun khmer, and alot of studies have shown muay thai did have some influnce from angkorian martial arts culture (khmers) but overtime made their own techniques, we must respect each others martial arts, i love kun khmer and is excited for it to be in the sea games, but i also respect muay thai

Good explanation. This explanation can bring the relationship of Khmer and Thai more better and respect each other by giving each other credit to the authentic’s one( if see the word Khmer or Thai on the explanation just give credit to the owner, don’t claim to be owner without the owner’s information.
