I have a big problem with people just selectively forgetting to buy my son gifts because they don't think he pays enough attention to the gift giving process & can't verbally appreciate them, So therefore doesn't care about receiveing gifts(or wouldn't notice if they left him out) So often times they do just "forget" or give the excuse they don't know what he would want since he doesn't tell them. I'm really frustrated with people thinking he's lesser because he functions differently.

Good grief. That's rude and sad.
I mean, my parents ask me what both my kids want or need, and my oldest is 7 and can talk just fine himself. My 2 year-old can't tell what he wants very much yet, but they still get him stuff. They ask me or they guess just like most people do when they buy someone a gift. You don't always know exactly what someone else would love to have, but you do your best.

its amazing being in a relationship with another neurodivergent person. im autstic and my partner is allistic but still neurodivergent. its so amazing giving each other gifts because we have no shame when it comes to getting the other toys or "kid" things

I'm glad the age appropriate comments towards adults seems to be less now than it was a few decades ago. I ususally only see that one as "don't give that powerful Nerf gun to a 3 year old" and whatnot.
yeah i only think age-appropriateness matters in terms of things which are too "mature". like even though my nephew likes scary movies, he's 12 - a lot of scary movies are way too graphic for kids his age, so we have to be careful what movies we buy for him. i don't think that being "too old" for something is a thing though

I get that you want to make life easier for the autist, but I think your model needs updating :-)
The term “age appropriate” assumes that everybody develop the same way and this is patently not the case. That _most_ people go through the same developmental states in the same order is _descriptive_ , not _prescriptive_ .
Humans have a hard time getting their heads around this distinction, but once you make the effort a lot of things gets easier and makes more sense :-D
I think you muddle together gift-giving and education in your post because you have a hazy notion that making people go through the motions will “fix” them.
The problem here is that autists is different, not broken :-)
Gift-giving is about giving people something they will value and that makes them happy.
Education is about how to comprehend the world and how to interact with the world without harming yourself - or the world :-)
Sometimes a gift can be valued _and_ help interaction with the world, but insisting that every gift should full fill both criteria is putting far too much strain on both gift-giver and recipient.
Don't give necessary things as gift, give them when they are needed.
Or did you enjoy receiving woollen socks and sensible sweaters for christmas? ;-)
You can give what you consider a toy to an adult as a gift and still guide this adult to not bringing the toy everywhere, but you have to balance your need for “normality” with the persons need for comfort or need for sharing cool features.
Deciding what people do in their own home is a no-go.
If someone want to use a comforter at age 40 that is their decision. You may advise them to not using it on the street, but in their own home it is none of your business.
And seek help if it bothers you.

Not regarding gifts, but I have run into the age appropriateness thing in the reverse direction. When I was young, I matched the "little professor" stereotype pretty well and got comments to the effect that "kids don't talk like that."
I tried explaining this to my dads side of the family but they wouldn’t listen to me. I’m 18, I have Aspergers and I really love Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure plush toys because they’re soft, cuddly and very cute, but mostly because I don’t trust myself with overpriced figures that I’ll probably break on accident. My dads wife (not my biological mom, my biological parents are divorced) just sat there and said to me “you’re almost 19 don’t you think you’re too old for this?” and “there are many things that make me happy but that doesn’t make them age appropriate.” That really hurt me so I don’t really ask people for gifts now. Those statements really messed with me so I think I’ll do my own gift buying from now on.

The other type of gift is the "this will help you for into NT society". My sister almost always gets me something like this... A fashionable piece of clothing (regardless of if it's something I'd ever wear, if it's comfy, etc).

I'm 30 Years old and I have Autism too and I love it, when Relatives give me LEGOs as a Gift, because building Things with LEGOs is also one of my special Interests, besides Art, Music, Soccer, Languages, Geography and History!
my main issue with people giving me gifts is that I have a massive amazon wishlist (so people can 'surprise' me with a gift but can be sure it's something I will appreciate and use) and people still won't get things from it and constantly ask me what I want instead

This! I have a ton of books on my wish list and no one buys them. If they do buy me a book, it's never one off my list because apparently it wouldn't be a surprise or whatever. They also balk at stuff like ebooks because they can't be wrapped. Print out a copy of the cover and wrap that!

The best gift someone could give me is nothing so that a) no surprise/reaction anxiety, and b) so that I don’t have to go through the ordeal of shopping and choosing an appropriate gift for them in return. I have come to detest Christmas and birthdays for the angst/anxiety it causes me.
My daughter is the best gift giver ever. EVER! It's weird how she always nails it. I mean... EVERY TIME! Others aren't. It's made me dislike gifts. I don't like surprises either though. You are producing some very good content! I appreciate the good sound quality, no background noise and your pleasant voice. I had similar experiences with gifts for a long time. Getting something I will never use is just clutter and I certainly do not need more stuff to distract me! So I started donating these types of gifts to charity. A few times I sold them on eBay and used the money to buy something I really wanted. Things changed pretty quickly after my friends found out I was doing this ;-) They figured out that any type of organic produce is a good choice for me. Getting any type of healthy food makes me feel very happy and supported. When that happens, I make sure to express my gratitude on two separate occasions.

Just checked out that emergency chat app. Brilliant. So many times, I swear, this could have helped so much, even when I am totally fine, just for people who don't understand. I don't necessarily have meltdowns, but do have shutdowns or reach my "breaking point" and all that, when all the emotion and frustration and "overwhelmage" in general just collides together in a supernova inside my head. I never really shows, though, on the outside. Just total disorder and tumult within, never revealing itself physically. Which is kinda bad, I guess, nobody really knows how I'm doing, or anything. meh. I don't know what else to put, I'll be quiet now. No wait, I'm also really glad to have found you (I was referred and soforth delighted with the findings), among other stuff on the internet, both people's contributions and websites dedicated to the neurodiverse populace. It really helps knowing I'm not the only weird one that nobody else relates to, and stuff. Keep it up, Amythest. thank you for your contributions towards helping "neuro-normal" people understand us better.

Another reason why gift giving could be hard is because the autistic person might have highly specialized interests, so the gift giver simply doesn't have the knowledge about that topic to know what is useful for them.
Yeah, I remember Christmas with the extended family, giving me a gift within my known area of interest was always a big joke to them. Maybe part of why I stopped having anything to do with them once I was 18 and couldn't be legally forced to.
I'm sorry that your family treated you so poorly. You deserve gifts that make you sincerely happy. I'm proud of you for protecting yourself and getting out.
Great video! Could you do a video on how to be proud of your autism when you feel unaccepted by people? I’ve come a long way with accepting who I am but I think many people could benefit from a video like that! I would love to be able to watch a video like that when I am having a tough day! Maybe include some self advocacy tips for dealing with people who are tearing you down.

Usually I like people getting me treats or money because anything outside of that is usually something I don't want(but I'll accept because I don't want to make others upset) or it's something I can't use (like scented bath sets).

3:35 I think a lot of people can't respect things they don't understand under any circumstances. If it doesn't make sense to them, then obviously that's because it just doesn't make sense. Under one specific circumstance, almost no one can respect something they don't understand, that circumstance being when not understanding something leads to a misunderstanding -- an offensive one.

I usually get my boyfriend consumables and experiences. If he wants something to keep from me, he can keep the cards I make for him.
I think people hesitate with gift giving to those with ASD is because we become SO narrow in interests at times that we become alienated from NT peers because it's all we talk about. I was taught to love others you don't think of yourself as lower, or higher than them. You look out for their interests too. I had to learn (the hard way) as a teen that no one liked the things I did as much as I did, and I needed to be interested in what they liked or at least be open to learning about new things, to make ANY connection. It's a shallow way to live to think everyone has to bend over backwards for us.

I really enjoyed this as people struggle to know what to get me. I'm not entirely sure why, I think maybe it's the thought that I have enough things relating to my interests/ or they don't know what specific part of my interest I like (I like films, but don't really like thrillers for example)
I struggle with the idea of hinting at things I'd like as I tend either to be far too subtle or worry that I'm not going to be subtle enough.
However, when it comes to giving gifts, I think I do really well. I spend a lot of time trying to think of things that would mean something to my friend. I'll try and make something too. When I commit to something I feel is important, I really focus and want to do my absolute best.
I'm not sure if this is a common trait amongst autistic people. Certainly, I think the general perception amongst NTs is that we are bad at empathy (sigh) and therefore not great at gift giving. Personally I think the opposite is probably true for a pretty sizeable portion of the autistic community. I don't know, it'd be interesting to hear how others are at gift giving

I like swivel/spin chairs. Even my (as far as I know neurotypical although one might be autistic like I believe I am and the other might have ADHD) kids play on those chairs. "Let's spin around!" tends to be their thought of how to kill time in the doctor's examination room while waiting for the doctor to come in the room.
There's a reason people developed merry-go-rounds, carousels, and of course, the awesome spinning chairs. 🙂
I generally don't give gifts or expect to receive gifts. And when getting gifts the ones i appreciate the most are things I within reason can't have too much of like Lego, services like giving me a ride back and forth to a store so I can buy something big like a TV or desk, or just money I can spend on interests or living expenses(the last one is mostly for family). I would prefer to not get anything rather than getting something the giver has not thought through like flowers or a thing of no other use than being decorative.
My birthday this year my parents and I organised the gift so I wasn’t pressured in to liking the thing I was given if I didn’t actually like it

I feel like another problem about age appropriateness is also when people only give a Neurodiverse person only very stereotypically "younger" things. Like yah, I like stuffed animals so freaking much and I like watching MLP, BUT I also like adult fantsay novels and watching the L word. It's not mutually exclusive people. great video, I have always found the idea of people not wanting to encourage a certain special interest rather odd because actually they can become a source of employment in adulthood.
I don't like suprise gifts, mostly because I want to give equall back and if someone gives me suprise gifts I don't know if I have the money at that time to give them something of equal walue back.
My only exeption is my mom who sometimes gets me small gifts, I give her small suprise gifts too but she often spends more on me then I do on her. But she also knows all about my income and expenses. I also trust her a lot.
But I was wondering if anny one else on the spectrum feels the same way or in a simular way about suprice gifts. I would love to hear your opinions.
Autistic opinion: I wouldn't like surprise gifts either. My boyfriend and me have planned when we give eachother a gift (at birthdays and christmas, not valentine's day or our anniversary).

A cat cafe is a cafe where you can hang out with cats while you enjoy your food and drink. It's absolute paradise for anyone who loves cats.
I would rather someone like "kiddie" things than drinking, drugs, and wild parties. I don't understand the big deal. I like watching children's movies, especially when anxious.
People always have a hard time giving me gifts.
So a staff person in a group home told a 21 year old guy ( who was really bummed out) to stop crying because crying wasn't "age appropriate". When he stopped crying, he received a high five from the staff person. I watched all this passively while wondering how many more abusive cliches I was going to see.
That sounds absolutely despicable and appalling. And yet I doubt anyone else there thought that it was perfectly acceptable for that staff member to do that.
Can you give me some insight on why son just started grinding his teeth. Is it a sensory ordeal or stimming?

Great video, I totally agree! I'm an adult and I LOVE My Little Pony, and I'm happy to have people in my life who accept that. I have a question. I've heard a lot of autistic advocates claim that Autism Speaks is or was working to develop a prenatal test for Autism similar to the one for Down Syndrome, but I have not been able to find a source on this. Do you have a source on this?
Autism speaks would like that, but it's simply not possible. Down syndrome is easy to find because of the trisomy 21. Autism doesn't have a clear pattern in the chromosomes/DNA, so it's not possible to make a prenatal test for autism.

I have heard many people claim this. If it is true, then I want to inform people that Autism Speaks holds this position, but if is not, then I do not want to say that repeat claims that they do and thereby spread misinformation. Has Autism Speaks ever endorsed research for preventing Autism?

Please don't feel shame or think you are a bad father; you are trying to help the child you love, and that is a very good thing. And do not think that your daughter's abilities will always be what they are today; all children grow and develop - none of us are the same as we were at 5 years old. Obviously I do not know your daughter's abilities, but even if she is non-vocal and even if she remains non-vocal throughout her life, it does not mean that she is not smart; it just means that she may need to use a different method of communicating, like writing, drawing or videos. While personal interaction with your child on their level is a good thing, I'm not so sure about Floortime from what I've read about it. When conscientiously practiced, it forces constant social interaction on the child and allows no personal time. That is very wearing for Autistics and leads to meltdowns and shutdowns, which take a real emotional toll. ABA is essentially dog training for children; all it does is force the child to act in ways that mimic the reactions of neurotypical people. Autistic adults who underwent ABA as children generally feel extremely resentful about it. It was invented by the same person and uses the same methods as gay conversion therapy. These therapies are both advocated by Autism Speaks and that alone calls for caution when considering them.

Dude, the fact that you found internet stuff/amythest and are reaching out to her community to help your daughter proves that at the least you're probably a good father. She's as smart as she is, which I'm sure is plenty smart. I wouldn't use amythest as a metric for your girl though, she's her own autistic person and she won't be like amythest any more than anyone is 'like amythest'. Well, maybe more than a nerutotypical person, but I think now that I am reading too much into this.

But when they talk about Floortime they say that usually a child develops through games in childhood, and I think this is the best way to develop her. Usually I didn’t share with what was happening in my life, but this was the first time. Of course, I love my daughter very much and I will love my whole life and I will struggle until her recovery. Good points about gift giving. But in what sense do they apply specifically to autistics? I think they are true for everyone. Our is that maybe your point?
Autistic people's lived experiences are pathologized in a way that other people's experiences aren't. For example, because we are passionate and intense about our interests, they have been called "obsessions" and it's still common for parents to be told to discourage their autistic child's interest and encourage other interests, so that they seem more "normal". For example, if an autistic person loves sharks, their parent may refuse to buy them anything shark related, and tell family and friends that shark-related gifts are not allowed, and will instead buy them gifts "appropriate" to that child's age and perceived gender. And that's just one way in which we're treated differently than non-autistic people, and that's where I'm coming from in this video.
