- After a back and forth game, the 2021 Women's National Championship came down to the final shot from Arizona star Aari McDonald. But Stanford's defense stood tall to take the victory 54-53 and the title. Watch the tense final minutes here.
Cardinal sophomore Haley Jones made what would become the game-winning basket and free throw. Jones finished with 17 points and was named the tournament's most-outstanding player.

Arizona's offense was just standing around and waiting for one player to score on a lot of those posessions man =/
FAAAAACTS!!!
Right! We probably won’t see Arizona in the brackets with Aari going into the WNBA.
Wtf😭 triple teamed and u not finna pass it to ur wide open teammate. Coulda been an easy 2 which is all they needed. Can’t play that sloppy when a national title is on the line
"CAN'T HIT!!!" Those words will haunt
Uh Pass the ball idiot
Neither team deserved the win. Good def or whatever, Their numbers are just HORRIBLE
It's not her fault. She was double teamed. The team mate didn't move for her to see her and pass the ball. Her team mates were just standing and doing nothing. They won't even get this close, if not for her efforts.
@@ITISKONY Triple** the defender who was guarding the one in the corner stepped up. Any decent guard at that level should be able to sense a double or triple team and that’s when you dish it to ur open teammate. Plus why go for a circus three when ur down by 1 with more than enough time to get inside. Even if her teammates were just “standing there” like you say, she is in college ball, she should know how to dribble with her eyes up and see open opportunities on the floor
Last play was not a good call by Arizona coach. They only needed 2 points and should have gone inside with the ball.
dribble with eyes up and she would have spot the openers.....well....
That girl at the 3 point line should have rushed inside. Was only one defender covering 3 red jerseys. CHOKE

To people complaining about Arizona’s possession at the end, I don’t see you playing in a national championship 😂 lets see you try it with 6.1 seconds and the amount of pressure they faced. Congrats to both teams 👏🏼
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Ooooooo hush it

Agreed
I agree... WTH???
Honestly bro. Sloppy basketball. Horrible play tbh. Arizona still had 1 timeout left and they just threw up a brick
I'm so proud of our Wildcats ! They could have won but Stanford earned it by defending the final shot! Congrats!
Stanford just made Mcdonald shot 5 of 20,double standard fans😂
Mcdonald is overrated
She had 3 open teammates who could of won if for them 🤦♂️
Ikr
True. But without her they never would have made the tournament. So they rely to heavily on her and it cost them the game.
Her teammates were but it was not until there was about 2 seconds left. By time then she was doubled to triple covered. She would of had to lob the pass up to get it out and there probably was no time for the others to catch and shoot it before the buzzer. The person that I think that cost Arizona on that play was the in bounder. After she inbounded the pass, she made NO EFFORT to get open or draw coverage! IF she raced to the paint, she might of took that the Stanford Center in the paint out of the equation and made it possible to pass the ball to the Arizona player in the back corner for a wide open all or nothing 3 pointer.
That play was kinda hard cuz she was trapped but almost all of their last possessions she was taking super contested shots and trying to do it all herself and she is a super talented player but the best teams are the ones that have faith in each other but it kinda seemed like she only had faith in herself
@@lukeparker4063 her team is doodoowater i wouldn't trust them either especially not with a open three to win the game. she probably had a better chance of making the shot she took
This is a prime example of what happens when a coach worries about a “star player” and not the team.
When you wanna play hero ball but your teammate was open for 10 whole seconds.
It was only 6 seconds left I agree she could’ve passed but it’s not a guaranteed bucket and the play was ran for her, she is the best player on the Arizona team
@@user-xu3fu5xm7p everybody in the whole world watching knew she getting the ball that play. And she getting triple or double teamed for sure. She must know when to give it up.

Number 0 was wide open. Should’ve passed when she seen a double team coming.

Said the same thing. Girl in the right corner was wide open.
Agree wide open plenty of time to pass for lay up
🤣🤣🤣🤣 right then she gon cry after, Peep how #0 was like wtf this bitch
True dat sister true dat
that Aari Mcdonald girl is really good, but that last play was beyond selfish, there was a girl in the corner w noone around her, why wont you pass. She is the reason for the loss, no question
her team is doo doo water i wouldn't trust them either especially not with a open three to win the game the way they'd been shooting prior. now if its a lay that's one thing but she had a open corner jumper that no one was making. Her teammate should've gone to the basket for the open lay rather than gamble a three she knew she'd miss. it's not like the needed a three either the were only down one. she probably had a better chance of making the shot she took than her teammate of making that open 3.
@@youngkingstokes8063 she bricked a free throw late in the fourth too. The game would be tied if she made it. But you are right the rest of her team was just standing there doing nothing. At least move without the ball and set screens or something

Horrible game. I never seen so many terrible turnovers and easy shots missed. I don't what the heck that last minute was. My question, is how these coaches get paid? They should get 60k at most for this. Its just players running around and making wierd plays. I don't get it.
Everybody is talking about her team mate to her right being open, but ole girl on the left could've gotten the ball almost immediately because Kiana came off of her to go out and guard Aari. Aari was just dead-set on taking that heavily contested 3.
True but that's the play the coach drew up. Coach said she was the only option in the post game interview. It's hard to execute anything you don't prepare for in those situations. McDonald was the only AZ player to score in last 4 minutes.
@@DigitalOdyssey3001 well in that case you have to call into question her play-calling. Anyone who paid attention during the tournament knew that Aari was a dangerous shooter but even with that being said, she hadn't scored all 53 points leading up to that moment. The coach should have anticipated Aari having multiple defenders being sent at her and had a back-up plan for her to get the ball to someone else when they came to stop her.
@@alexroberson4454 But, she was the only player that scored for Arizona in the last 4 minutes.
@@ITISKONY y'all keep bringing up the last 4 minutes like that's a legitimate counter to my previous point. Its not. She had 22 of AZ 53 points. She's not the only one. But since you keep bringing that up lets look at what happened in that four minute stretch. She went 1-4 from the field (including the missed three at the buzzer) and made 3 free throws. Now if it was a matter of her making bucket after bucket after bucket to lead some valiant charge all by herself I could see the point, but the game was tight and NOBODY could shoot efficiently, not even her. And hell, there was only 1 shot not taken by Aari during those last four minutes. That's the problem. You guys, and the coach as well, are/were trying to make Aari into the sole hero of this team even though by the time it came for that last second shot there were two other players on the court with a higher shooting percentage than her.
@@alexroberson4454You are absolutely right. I watched the post game interview just to hear what the coach had to say. When she said that Aari was the only option I knew that was a critical mistake. Just like you said, she should have planned for another option. They gave Aari the Giannis defense- a wall of defenders, she had to go four on one. But it was a valiant effort.
As I watch this game between Stanford and Arizona, the ever discipline standford made so many errors down the stretch and they dribble too much, they also get away with another kickball violation, it's very clear because it happen in front of the Arizona bench, the Arizona meanwhile crash the boards, and made some few mistakes, and the last one cost t them the championship...McDonald being triple team, force the shot and her teammates knowing that she will be mark because she is her main scorer should have help her.. anyways congrats to both teams..it's a roller coaster year, having this kind of games made us fans forget the problems that we are facing right now..it's a treat and I'm gonna wait for another season..because the women's took the spotlight this year with so many talented freshman's and recruit and the emergence of teams..
What a game
Glad to see a Diverse team win the Championship
To those who are slamming/insulting McDonald for not passing the ball have to look at 2 things: what she could see and the great D that Stanford played. Williams fights through a screen to deny the first look. Hull's length forces Pennington to double-clutch and pass the ball a bit late forcing McDonald to wait on the pass, allowing Wilson to catch up with her. McDonald looks up at 11:19 in the video and there is no lane to pass to, as she would have to throw over the 2 defenders in front of her AND past the defenders eyeing the corner 3s. Now this is where she could have tried to force #22 Brink to her right to come at her by driving the right side of the lane and then kicking it out to Baptiste for the 3. But that would require passing the ball past the length of the 6'4" Brink so that's not as obvious a decision as people may think. Heck Baptiste could have cut to the paint sooner as well. And I know this is the internet where people feel they can call someone an "idiot" for not passing a basketball, but jeez folks, cut these kids some slack.
Damn Stanford got away with some calls ngl
Pffffffffffffttttt again........
One against four... turnaround fadeaway jump shot from the top of the key over a 7-footer... she shoots.. CLANK!!!!!!!!
In fairness, it was 1 against 3 😂
Aari McDonald touches the ball... go to McDonald family in the stands, time out... go to McDonald family in the stands, come back from commercial... go to McDonald family in the stands. How will they ever fill that void in the championship game?
I wanted AZ star girl to drive a hole into the lane and get fouled on the LAST play. Salute to AZ for effort, congrats to Cali.
Man she should have the moment she got the ball
She should have
You gotta feel bad for Arizona’s #2 she dang near hit it at the buzzer. If your a competitive athlete you know that may bother her for life, good athletes don’t remember the the good plays or games years later, they remember the one that didn’t go right.

I’m watching this again, somehow expecting a different outcome. Everyone who played in this game should be proud of themselves.
Arizona outside shooting was terrible. Surprised they only lost by 1 point. I dont think Ari McDonald trusted her teammates at the end of the game. I don't blame her for that...
With all that an off night by McDonald they only lost by 1
This was sad to watch honestly I cringed so hard on that last play, star player with absolutely zero iq in a critical moment
Mcdonald one hell of a game but you cant let your pride get in the way of winning a chip, you cant shoot a three down 2 with 3 people on you, pass the ball and win it in OT
Man I ant gonna lie the refs missed alot off call in this tournament since the Uconn vs Baylor game ref been fucking off alot of missed calls Stanford vs Louisville and Arizona vs Uconn too NCAA get your ref's right man.

9 points in the final 3:44. About a dozen missed shots. Final two possessions mishandled. "Thrilling."
And everyone is standing around. Goddamn dude. What are we supposed to be enjoying here.
The Wildcat in the corner should have been an outlet. They had an open man. But that's great defense from Stanford.
Passing the ball inside is not a guarantee two for the win but it would have been the smart play. FRESNO STATE (2-5) just lost 72-73 against CALIFORNIA-BERKLEY (6-1). Twin HALEY CAVINDER did a perfect inbound bounce pass to a big under the goal for the WIN and the big missed the bunny shot. It was the smart play and the big cost them the game.
Probably because Arizona defeated UCONN but I'm happy for Stanford (by the way they are great on soccer too!)
Stanford is playing Junior High Ball the twenty seconds of this game! They luck out big time
I wouldn't call Stanford "lucking out". The referees missed two huge fouls against Stanford in the last crucial minutes of the game. Arizona was victimized big time. I'm a USC alumnus and have seen this happen before when one plays Stanford.
They got a lot of bad and missed calls go their way within the last two minutes of the semi's and the finals. That being said, I can't take anything away from their MVP. But, yeah...A fair amount of sketchy calls / non calls...
Both teams deserved to lose at the end.
Not being able to challenge calls and non calls is the failure of any sports league.Championships taken away or added off this in all sports.
If you give the teams the option to challenge and they do not it becomes partially your own teams fault.
@@curtisharton9245 there was a big call that went Stanford way but they got the ball back in matter of seconds

Im seeing same thing they did to Uconn. They pressed Paige too much and their teammate couldn't keep it well enough and now McDonald being pressed. Personal opinion, I think if that was Paige on the last call, she would have passed the ball. Nevertheless, this was a tough and good game on both side.
Don't even get what Williams was doing there. She was literally standing there for 3-4 seconds with the shot clock almost at 0 and finally passed with 2 left on the shot clock. Very luck Stanford pulled out the game.
It’s as if she was oblivious to the shot clock. She almost cost them the game.
@@MsRotorwings That's for sure. The other thing is that she passed to Brink, who wasn't curling toward the basket to position herself to shoot since she had to run out so far to get the ball with 2 seconds left on the clock. Williams froze.

Williams got her ass blasted against SC guards and McDonald.
I dont understand her hype and that last play shows that.

Dude her teammate was wide open the whole fucking play I CANNOT BELIEVE anyone was that open for the final championship play and this girl STILL got her well played season to her head LOL
Being an ACC fan I enjoyed watching the games this March. I thought both of these teams earned their tickets to the Championship game but from my perspective Stanford was the better team. I actually thought they were lucky to win this game today as bad as they played. They dribbled the ball way too much and often into double teams against a more athletic squad. Just way to many turn overs usually when they made bad passes or passed to someone who was totally covered. Again, both teams were good but I didn't think either team made very good decisions in the last couple of minutes.
I blame the final play on coaching and McDonald.
Mcdonald shoots way too much
She was 5for 21...she lost the game period
Back to training for both teams, they have to go back to basics how to receive the ball and dribble, help the one holding the ball by making yourself open and receive the ball. Lets give credit to the girls also, probably their first time to be placed in a pressure filled game, its about learning from mistakes committed
It's very easy for us to criticize those errors for both teams because we're not inside the court. I just can't imagine how hard to be in their situation. The struggle and the pressure to have that 🏆.
And it was a Pac12 National championship
Yes that was a bad shot but the problem with this play was that after the ball was inbounded #1, the inbounder did not get away from the ball. She should have ran all the way over to the opposite corner to open up the left side of the court for the ball. Instead she stayed on the left wing putting the help side defender in good position to stop the ball.
