  • Work on a Superyacht Academy is primarily about mentorship and accountability, and in this video I'm going to be making it very clear why this matters for superyacht deck crew.
Calling all yacht crew deckhands! Please take note. If you're operating in deckhand mode and playing your superyacht career on easy, it could cost you dearly. I had to learn this lesson the hard way, and I don't want the same for you. A super yacht career has the potential to give you great rewards, but only if you play it right.
Super yacht deck crew members who take their mega yacht careers seriously from the beginning, shift into officer mode early on, and turn their efforts up to 11 are the ones who will enjoy the best jobs, the best experience, and the most money. Everyone else will do okay, but they'll know that they could have done better.
A good mentor can make all the difference. Exceptional career in yachting, or an average one that is only a fraction of what could have been. Which will you choose?
If you're stuck in deckhand mode and going nowhere, please get yourself a mentor. It doesn't have to be me as part of Work on a Superyacht Academy. A captain or chief officer that you've worked with may be willing to fill the role for you. Whatever the case, don't underestimate the value of a mentor who can hold you accountable to your goals.

Are you playing your superyacht career in deckhand mode or officer mode?

I went from Deck on a 125' to captain of a 75' trawler in just over 2 yrs. Got my 500 ticket, then hired on as 1st officer on a 175' crew boat in the Gulf of Mexico for 3 yrs then moved to captain. I eventually retired with 3000 ticket having spent 23 yrs as capt in a 34 yr span. Things may have changed nowadays.

Matthew that outlines the focus that someone with a genuine eye for a career needs, rather than getting into the 'yachtie' attitude, which is fine, but no way to drive a career. Thank you for sharing your hard earned wisdom, and I hope that the Academy is finalised soon,

Best motivational video, push yourself to the limit!
Thanks matt for your videos, i am willing to put myself in the industry thanks to you!
Quick questions, no worries if you dont want to answer it.
You talked about your salary but you didnt talk about tips.
    Did you ever received any?
Is it too far stretched for a deckhand to earn 4k a month just from tips?
You also talked about rotation, when you are off are you still getting paid?
Either way i cant thank you enough to make this channel and help others to push higher and not to settle.
I am convinced 100% that you are going to help someone in here, thats very honorable from you, keep going matt!!

Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Yes, I have received some tips. On the right charter yacht, you could get an extra 3,000 Euros per week whilst chartering. Even a modestly busy summer season with six weeks of charter could therefore net you 18,000 Euros. Throw in a couple more weeks over the summer and some weeks during the Caribbean season and you'd double that for an average of an extra 3,000 Euros per month across the year on top of your salary. An extra 4,000 Euros per month is possible, but pushing it. Just be warned that trying to do this over the long term may not be sustainable. Not all yachts charter, and some yachts that are available for charter may not do so that much. You must therefore get on the right yacht, which is where my career focus comes in. Competition for jobs on these yachts is high, so you need to make yourself more employable than everyone else.
As for rotation, you should be paid every month even though you're there half the time. Your monthly salary may just be a bit less than if you didn't have rotation.
Wishing you all the best with your yachting career!

Great video! Unrelated, what do you think of those packaged courses like the dekchand one at Flyingfish or UKSA? I've seen a few say they're not necessary so im just looking for a second opinon? Theyre also very expensive! Thanks!

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  Před 9 dny

Thanks for your comment. If you have time and money to spare then those courses might be a nice introduction, but they won't make you more employable. STCW Basic Training, Powerboat Level 2, PWC Proficiency, and a short range VHF course can be done for about £1600 including accommodation. In my opinion, you're better off spending the rest of your time and money in a yachting hub looking for work.
