I have an easy method to find weapons for scrap. Go to Venice beach (blue crab grill). At soon as you go outside into the parking-lot there is 4 weapons in that area. The first one is on your right next to the dumpster, the second and third one is behind the ticket booth on the floor, the fourth one is on the back of a pickup truck. After you pick up those 4 weapons, scrap them and return to the main menu. Once you load back into the game, the weapons will spawn again in the same spot.
This method helped me for scraping 500 items. I was at 250 and was able to finish this challenge in under 20 minutes. Since the loading times in this game are really quick.
