- Flower garlands are an integral part of Hindu culture, with a history that goes back thousands of years. Rajiv shares this very personal craft that carries a very significant meaning to his heritage.
***Please note: string should not be put into rivers and lakes! Even cotton and wool string can end up as a fatal end to birds who get their feet caught and tangled in string. Garlands that are taken to bodies of water for ritual purposes should be disassembled with just the flower blossoms put into the water.

It’s such a meaningful tradition. I was fortunate enough to be tasked with making flower garlands for the deities in the temple I used to live in. I was even taught to bead some of the beautiful clothing they wear. Thank you for sharing this it brought back so many beautiful memories. Recently I made flower garlands for my friends wedding and her guru offered them to the deities. I placed one around a treasured tree I lost in a hurricane and it’s growing back stronger than it ever was. The magic of devotion. I will think of you and your mom when I am out admiring it next. 💜🙏🕉️📿

I love every video that Rajiv puts out, the calming atmosphere, attention to detail, and focus on what might be otherwise forgotten handicrafts is wonderful. I click so fast when new content comes out! But there is something beyond that beauty and very intimate in a delightful way when Rajiv shares from his own cultural and religious upbringing. I'm so grateful to him for sharing with us, especially knowing the vulnerable place a person has to go to when opening up that world to outsiders, with that risk they may not fully appreciate those traditions. Oh Rajiv, how serendipitous this video was. I sat down to finish a crocheted table runner for my daughter which consists entirely of flowers made of chains which need to be strung together as each is crocheted… and yes, it is like a garland. Amazing that you explained how once the lamp is lit it always stays lit. That is exactly what happened with my crocheting. I learned how to from the nuns at the parroquial school in elementary school and many decades later I wondered if I remembered how to crochet and like a miracle the flame got bigger and here I am enjoying the glow from the lamp.
I had the privilege of visiting India in 2020 and had the most amazing experience visiting a small Hindu temple where one of the caretakers placed a garland around my neck… not sure why but I burst into tears… it was a very profound experience.

Hi, Once the plantain tree fruit is harvested, the plant is cut down normally buf there will be lot of baby ines from the mother plant.
The leaf was used as plate in South Indian weddings but not anymore! Thanks to westernization. The flower is used in a dish called vusili that uses chick peas(soak and grind them coarse). Raw plantain is nicely sauteed. The inside stem, long, in the trunk of the plant is used in lentil(thoovar dal) soup. The way corn has lot of layering, this has too and we use one of the layer to tie flowers into garlands.
@@mysteriousu5528no, we still practice using banana leaf. But yes it’s for festivals. We had puja yesterday, all young boys loved eating on banana leaves. We had choices for them. But they insisted eating on leaf. Yes the availability is less in cities, but in suburbs it’s plenty. And even in farmers market leaf is available. The good thing about past was, even in cities people had space for banana plant. But now it’s overcrowded.
Bless you. I, too, have garlands made out of marigolds on my father’s photograph. I also recall the garlands made out of white flowers that were strung into the long braids of young girls & women. Thinking of your loss as I think of mine with the mourning period coming up in three days.

Thank you for showing how these garlands are made, when I visited Bangalore I was fascinated when I saw them and wanted to learn how to make them but never had a chance while we were there. When I saw your video description I could not contain my excitement, and seeing you work with those flowers was just magical. Definitely a wish come true. I have very fond memories of making garlands with my maternal grandmother, she would design and architect such masterpieces and especially the lockets/pendants with leaves and twigs and what not. After her passing, this is the thing i miss the most. These words doesn’t suffice but truly sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing the vulnerability. ❤
Here in Greece, we use flower galands to decorate the Jesus christ epitaph before the ceremony of his death before Easter. We gathered at the church after the ceremony (ceremonies of the holy week happen in the afternoon) and through the night we made garlands of violets that smelled so beautiful. I was the chosen to gather fresh lemon flowers around the neighborhood , because they knew I was the only who bothered to pick randomly only a few from every tree, so this took me about 2 hours. These flowers are used to decorate the cross on the top of the epitaph and some more hanging in arches around the epitaph. Nothing as big as hindu people make as a decoration but prety similar i supose.

This is incredible Rajiv - bringing light to our culture - I am Hindu, but not Tamil. I have always wanted to learn to make a flower garland. I cannot wait to try this. Such a wonderful video. Loss of loved ones run deep especially when its a parent. Truly sorry for your loss.
I watch Praveen Mohan on you tube. I found out about Saraswati & she became my favorite. Even more astounding (to me) was when I found that my mtDNA included India! Specifically, Gujarat & Bengal. (I always have had an interest in India.) Then I found out that Krishna's city, Dwarka was in Gujarat! Krishna also was in Bengal! 😀 Additionally, I was recently watching a video (Buddah's Lounge) titled Buddah's flute (the picture of a carved wooden Krishna statue) & while I listened the hairs on my arms stood up...I was not cold. I once had the chance to help make ginger leis for dancers in a hula performance. The needle, with floss carefully went down the throat of the ginger flower, being careful not to bruise the flower & keeping the leis in bags & keeping them cool until worn. For special occasions the honored person can have piles of leis around their neck. There are also leis made out of leaves.

Hi Rajiv, I am extremely sorry to hear that your Amma passed away. I pray God gives you the strength to get through. I am sure she was very proud of you and you have wonderful memories of her. You're so genuine and talented that everyone will love you.
BTW, in the city Chennai, of the state Tamil Nadu, india(this is for Americans who are not good in geography), the florists will sell garlands(jasmine is no 1 and the parfum Chanel uses different varieties of Jasmine) in trains. We learn how to make garlands out of loose jasmine flowers using plantain jute/fiber. Plantain tree's each and every part is used either in cooking or making garlands.
In Thamizh, there is a saying "vaazhai adi vaazhai". Vaazhai is the Thamizh word for plantain. Normally you will see it spread fast with baby ones.

For some, losing our mother is the most crushing and profound loss of our lives. My mom passed 3 years ago, and I miss her every day. My heart goes out to you Rajiv, sadly I lost both my dear parents several years ago and not a day goes by where I do not think of them. Both were academians and so globally diverse, I am also a Hindu who grew up in various parts of the world, went to an all girls Catholic school and was raised with cultural values of India, am a classically trained Bharatanatyam dance, as well as studied Carnatic music. Your mother raised such an incredible young man who is so inspiring and pure joy! Thank you for sharing all that you do so beautifully ❤

I think we could have guessed you're so Saraswati! I was introduced to Hinduism during Yoga teacher training where we had a Hindu priest teach us about Sanatana Dharma philosophy with daily Poojas, singing in Sanskrit, etc. which I felt so lucky to experience. It is truly magical, vibrant and beautiful. For graduation I had the idea for our class to place flower garlands on our teachers. We didn't know how to make them of course so we did order them. Yesterday, a family had to say goodbye to their child. This morning , I awoke to thoughts of my father, mother, brother, and uncle. They have all been gone awhile but you never know when grief will strike. Thank you for making the day a bit more bearable.

Five minutes in to this video and I am in tears. It is so lovely to hear your pride in Sanatana Dharma(Hinduism). I have a toddler and hope someday she can talk about our culture and dharma the same way you do. Growing up, I would help my amma in making jasmine flower garlands. I wanted to mention that we use the garlands to decorate the idols and photos in our pooja( not a true one but roughly translates to worship) but also statues of people. Also besides Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada and Malayalam compositions are also very much a part of Carnatic music. In fact the father of Carnatic music is Sri Purandara Dasa from Karnataka. This is great, thank you, Rajiv. My spiritual path for 15 years was Siddha Yoga Meditation with Gurumayi Chidvilasananda as the living head of that beautiful path. When we made garlands, we would use carnations and just used a needle and thread to attach the flowers, so of course, they looked nowhere near as good as yours!🌸🌼🌸
The HIndu tradition is the path I enjoy the most and resonate with. I also make beautiful malas using semi-precious stones such as turquoise, rose quartz, lapis lazuli etc. I just love designing and making them, and have to take a deep breath before I make the tassel because I find that part a wee bit hard to do. 😄

Your video is so timely. My Indian father-in-law passed in Nov 2022. He was cremated but my mom in law has not been able to gain the strength to scatter his ashes at sea (his wish) until now she wants to schedule. Now you have taught me to make these beautiful garlands so that each family member can toss them at sea when that time comes this month. Blessings to you❤

Rajiv, I’m sorry for your loss but how proud she must have been of you! I love hearing how you love your religion, which is not heard much these days, and how important it is to you. I am a Christian but am very familiar with Saraswati, Ganesh, and Hanuman and often use mantras. I try to educate my Christian friends that the deities show us the attributes of God as in your examples. Love your talent and thank you for sharing your many gifts. No doubt your mother had a lot to do with your creative intelligence! ❤️
Dear Rajiv, I recently experienced the loss of my beloved mother; I share the same feelings of loss, and I also had the ability to meet her remains to be buried next to my father, interestingly, my youngest daughter could not attend her funeral in Mexico City, and she made a beautiful flower arrangement for her casket and that same arrangement traveled from the United States with my mother and upon her arrival some of the flowers had started wilting; upon her arrival at the funeral home, my sister, eldest daughter and myself arranged fresh flowers adding to the same arrangement that had traveled over 1000 miles from her family in the United States to her family back in Mexico City. Thank you for sharing your beautiful rituals and traditions. This enriched my view of the Hindu religion and opened my eyes to that beautiful culture. My heart hugs you and wishes you strength to go on without your mother. All my best 😢
