Summary:
Every century, the Shinigami chooses a recently deceased mortal to be its host. During the Kyuubi's sealing, it happened to be the time for the god of death to pick a new body. With a barrier seal around, Kushina Uzumaki was the only choice when the Yondaime performed the Shiki Fujin. Being the new Shinigami, Kushina was able to see into her son's future and grants Naruto a new bloodline and power over darkness to protect himself from Konoha and others who wanted to harm him.
