I have a new vocal technique channel uploads every week. czcams.com/channels/ptWfm6ZZ5rRfvycLEYqqfw.html
How long did it take you to get this? And what are your recommendations for getting around these natural instincts to do it completely wrong?
This video is gold, it's probably one of the holy grail vocal coaching videos on CZcams. Especially at 6:00 to 6:41
"Nobody can compete with Buuhh" I love it!
nobody! :D
Majin buuuuu
You the man Carl! So glad this channel exists ❤
cheers Broadway :)
Breakthrough!!! Thanks for this information!! I have had the singing success program since 2008 and felt like I had reached a ceiling in my voice!! Understanding this KEY to compression and tilt will help to guide my practice sessions with much more focus and clarity. I was doing this about 80% of the time but old habits kept creeping back in. And NOW I understand WHY! Thanks again!
Thank you so much! This channel is gold. Now I'm working in realising tensions, and this really helps in knowing where the tension is.
no problem Brian! Best of luck
Man i love your channel, you shine a light on things that singers often disregard only coz they haven't figured out how to approach them (like compression), you break them down very well, your approach of balance of intuition and intellect is on point! your channel is quite a find in the sea of useless singing tutorials.
Special shoutout for your Thom Yorke videos man!
It would be wonderful to see a video discussing the technique and style of the fabulous and cathartic Jeff Buckley!
Thanks Carl! :)
Just f*cking brilliant coaching.
amazing video and lesson. mind blown. Thanks!
I’m a student, thank you for this great video.
That 'U' sound is the same as in book, look, put, foot, rook, took, shook, crook and cook. Some languages have a character for it, like Greek. Its present in English but sadly we don't emphasize it as another vowel sound enough. Really English to me has a short, mid and long 'u.' Corresponding to cut, put and tube.
this video literally gave me a vocal breakthrough!
me too!!
Awesome work A1
This Video helped me a lot ❤️
excellent tip Carl, i tend to migrate alot!
keep it simple :)
It's a dipthong! Brilliant!
Legendary!
It would be easier if the BUHs were done after MUM. Similar vowel sounds. BUH has stronger cord closure than Mums, so start light and right... then get into the BUHs...
Yo lad, your a fucking star, I just want to thank u n applause u bro👊🏾 I don’t think I really know what u r🙌🏾
Amazing video and approach!! Really clear point of view! The only thing I would say is that you’re actually isolating two vocal muscles: Cricothyroid (to tilt the Tyroid Cartridge, stretching the vocal ligament) and the Tyroarithenoid (the actual vocal fold) that keeps the air pressure under the glottis on the same intensity. Otherwise if you were just using the CT muscle you would have heard the sound becoming actually thinner and headier.
The buh was easy for me😃
What was haaaaard was realising i had a disproportionate sense of the amount of compression i needed, as you have wisely pointed out. Once my chords got buff n' strong they held together and behaved without me having to slam them. The 'eee eee eee' exercise you teach was a lifesaver for this big voice that needed a delicate touch.
I love you Carl
Great I totally get it now :)
nice!
You didn't break down the exercise to understand how really physically do it, but it still helps a lot. Thanks!
I going try this
OK, I have been doing this a lot this morning. I have found it really helps to focus on the correct word if you say book on the last one. If I get off track, that gets me back in line. Also, I can indeed see how this exercise will help me. I can get up to high D sometimes doing this without going into falsetto! That is huge for me. For some reason D is easier than C. Go figure. DEFINITELY going to take some lessons from Carl.
I almost want to cry to have heard this right here
I haven't been able to sing high in mixed voice yet, but I learned to sing notes that I used to yell quietly. I can sing up to F4 without yelling, but after that I still flip to falsetto. Without compression, I flip into falsetto much earlier. I guess, with time I will be able to go higher and higher and eventually connect to my head voice.
The Power of BUH!....amazing! Got it!
I would like to hear your comments about pushing downwards and how to strengthen your real singing muscles.
When you find these muscles working in the right way these exercises come easier an easier day by day.
You will notice that tension moves from the throat to the lower body muscles automatically and suddenly you'll find
it is easy to keep throat free.
This is not very clear for beginners
1. Chest breathing vs Deep breathing. Deep breathing is very intense energy that is needed to sing. It's also used in sports. I am using to get get fit again. Love your videos man. This exercise helps you figure out that mechanism. I could never do high knees to save my life. Now I can do them for 7min straight! I'm building my abs now and there aien't nothin' stopping me now man!
Your gonna realize..." i am a vocal god" this is the second video ive seen of his, he is great!
Amber Easterday hah it was meant to be funny 😂 thanks for dropping bye x
Yeah, I know man you have a great sense of humor! You are a great singer and really knowledgeable too. Did you study music in college or your just musically inclined?
Carl, could you please, please do a follow up or answer me here - how far should you take this? I mean how high. Will this exercise be helpful in 5th octave as well?
I think everyone has problems with different exercises, my buhs are fine but I struggle with nays for some reason. Great video man
Yeah I think on average though this one is harder than nay's for most people.
Fernando Soster Bortolotto it makes sense. I discovered that for some reason I didn't blow the necessary while doing the nays. Now I can get a better n sound like the one you described. Thanks for taking the time to reply man.
Tried this kind of thing before. I will admit to having both those errors a/& the other one. Will try to do this exercise properly. What I really want to know is how the exercise translates to actual singing across breaks.
I think I did this wrong for a week thinking I was doing it the right way lol. I’m finding it easier to start at the top and then go down. That at least keeps the compressed coordination for me. This is definitely challenging, but I’m committed to understanding it the correct way
I DID IT, first shot at it, went awry only once, but.... I GOT IT! ✨✨✨
when i get to e5, my voice gets full of fry and its loud even though im staying on uh, while your voice kind of thins out.what do i do? thanks carl
thx for the ex Support from California Cheers from Camp GMAY you Rock
Would like to work on that for our next lesson 😉
Yeah, you'll be good at this one no doubt!
How long did it take you to get this? And what are your recommendations for getting around these natural instincts to do it completely wrong?
my vocal are quite deep,,sometimes I can't do the highnote🍃🍃
I know a singer who's name is shankar mahadevan, he is an indian singer,, he sung a song breathlessly,, reaction to that

carl...amazing teacher my man..you are without doubt the best...but i need your help.the buhhh exercise is amazing i can't believe how this has changed my ability to sing...but i need your help here.middle to high range i find extremely easy but as soon as the range drops to lower i seem to loose power in the voice and I'm struggling to sing a strong low note...what am i doing wrong...please help because this frustrates me now.
Came right away as i saw the notification, when can i catch you streaming ?
Tuesdays 2pm UK time Cas
see you on tuesday haha
serious question , when you hit the higher notes in the BUH exercise are you engaing the diaphragm and the muscles around the gut as if you are constipated ?
I can't tell if i'm doing it right because it feels quite easy, does anyone knows how i can be sure i'm doing it correctly ?
Do a video on youtube and tell us
When you changed your channel name!! Love you this video is like p90x or something for voice.
When I do it more open and dark lack the brightness and compression
Is this video only for male voices? I'm a female alto
I must be missing something. It's easy to do.
Carl please do a review on Regine velasquez's Minsan lang kita iibigin in 2002
The 6:32 moment LITERALLY HAPPENED TO ME! Thanks so much Carl you are the man and indeed a vocal god

Hi my friend do you have smule app account i want you yo sing for duet
I really like your presentation! But everything is over my head. Gotta find the kiddie's section.
Carl what do you mean by compressed?
Hold your breath while singing.
Slowly releasing your breath, while keeping your diaphragm strong all the way from the top of the note to the bottom.
I sound so thick and constipated:) doing BUH.. and can get up to E4/F4. To me it sounds so thick, maybe almost grunting and ugly, husky sound,. How do I drop that weight though? I'm a bass.

Hello carl
Thank you for your amazing courses. I have a serious question it is notin the topic of the video but need an answer.
I am a singer and i smoke for 10 years. The problem is that when i tried quit smoking i was not able to sing the way it was bad i did not have the same control and sensation.
Pleasr tell me if you have some advices about it. I think it would help lots of people.
Thank you
Keep going your super job
The voice will change when you stop smoking, that change has to be adjusted to but I have no experience with this type of issue so you might be better of asking some others.
@@cwehden thank you
What do you charge for one on one lessons? I have a few videos on my profile of you care to view them. I've been struggling for a year and I feel like I have made backwards progress with singing.
56 CAD
Subscribe done sir
As an owl, unfortunately "hooty" is a bit of a feature, still, I'll keep struggling on, Hoot, etc, my human friend, ^oo^
Okay so I was watching this later at night where singing wasnt ideal which made the video super awkward XP
another of eumee capile vision of love..reaction please sir..
Traducelo a castellano please
I do both the things you say not to 😕 I'm so confused. What's the point of the 'hooty' head voice if you not supposed to use it? And then how do you change pitch higher if not using it? 😭 I just want to be able to do it 😢
You can use hooty sounds, just not the point of this exercise. This exercise helps you learn to take full compression into head voice correctly.

Hey Carl I can do all of these nays, goos, buh, and all of these exercises with full compression up to e5 in full voice and can lip roll an entire bruno mars song in full voice with no strain what so ever but as soon as I sing my voice automatically flips into falsetto at f4#. How do I fix it so I can sing in full voice like I do in the exercises?
If you provide him with an audio clip he might be able to help!
Lip rolls are singing, what happens if you just open your mouth and don't change the coordination? :)
Not going to win on "The Voice" doing lip rolls! lol
My first reaction wuz "dislike", and wuz like "maaan!... what are u doing!?!?!? U sound so overtightened and u teach this technique to the others!" It sounded suuuuuuu wrong! BUT! there is always a but =) I tried it the first time, and somehow managed to go a lot higher than the demonstration and the sensation of the sound was not even close to urs. I almost closed the video, but then gave the comments section a chance. Didn't find any similar to mine reactions.... so then i thought maybe u have a point there... Well, i tried it "ur" way, and .... it wuz like WOW! I still don't sound the way u do, but i think i've got the right sensation u were talking about - i've managed to get that compressed sound, managed to connect successfully my chest and the head, managed to go very high AND got that clean vibrato on my high notes!
Thanks for this lesson! Hope u release a set (or a programm) of vocal exercises someday - i'll be sure to buy em!
You might even be one of the more treacherous Auschwitz guards Carl. Maybe I would too lol.
I have just one question about compression, I think I understand exactly what is going on, I want to confirm by asking what total compression feels like.
Is the sensation of full 100% compression like when you are trying to push air up through your neck area but nothing is coming out? Even with my larynx relaxed. Like when acting like you are suffocating? I know its an odd question.
So once its fully closed and I push air I can slowly control how much I let out until I am fully open and can breathe as normal?
Can only really tell you if it's right or not by hearing you do it. It feels kind of thick and heavy to me but those terms are relative, to an over squeezer it will feel pretty light and open for example..
Thanks Carl

Stick some "sob quality" on that sh*t if you struggle with this one!
Brett used to say 'cry' on pitch which is very true!

Buddha reaching nirvana exercise.
Hahahahaha hey my friend we can sing for beatiful song or beautiful warm up before performing
So basically act like a Russian French baby. "Beau beau beau beau beau beau beau beau beau beau". Hahahahahahha
very impressive but.. can you sing like Robert Plant?
Dude can full voice upto C9 what are you trying to say :) Na I don't have that type of voice though I can sing pretty decent in the tenor range at times.
Every time I saw Zeppelin, Robert couldn't or didn't hit the high notes he sang on the records. He went lower, but it didn't matter, and still sounded great, 'cuz it's Robert Plant!
What the fuck is goin here? buh buh buh 😂😁😃
I notice your mouth is not all open
I really did feel my soul hurting. 😂
Can you react to this video? You can see the great vocal ability of So-Hyang
