Breakthrough!!! Thanks for this information!! I have had the singing success program since 2008 and felt like I had reached a ceiling in my voice!! Understanding this KEY to compression and tilt will help to guide my practice sessions with much more focus and clarity. I was doing this about 80% of the time but old habits kept creeping back in. And NOW I understand WHY! Thanks again!

Man i love your channel, you shine a light on things that singers often disregard only coz they haven't figured out how to approach them (like compression), you break them down very well, your approach of balance of intuition and intellect is on point! your channel is quite a find in the sea of useless singing tutorials.
Special shoutout for your Thom Yorke videos man!

That 'U' sound is the same as in book, look, put, foot, rook, took, shook, crook and cook. Some languages have a character for it, like Greek. Its present in English but sadly we don't emphasize it as another vowel sound enough. Really English to me has a short, mid and long 'u.' Corresponding to cut, put and tube.

Amazing video and approach!! Really clear point of view! The only thing I would say is that you’re actually isolating two vocal muscles: Cricothyroid (to tilt the Tyroid Cartridge, stretching the vocal ligament) and the Tyroarithenoid (the actual vocal fold) that keeps the air pressure under the glottis on the same intensity. Otherwise if you were just using the CT muscle you would have heard the sound becoming actually thinner and headier.

  • @user-of4kk4in9f

The buh was easy for me😃
What was haaaaard was realising i had a disproportionate sense of the amount of compression i needed, as you have wisely pointed out. Once my chords got buff n' strong they held together and behaved without me having to slam them. The 'eee eee eee' exercise you teach was a lifesaver for this big voice that needed a delicate touch.

OK, I have been doing this a lot this morning. I have found it really helps to focus on the correct word if you say book on the last one. If I get off track, that gets me back in line. Also, I can indeed see how this exercise will help me. I can get up to high D sometimes doing this without going into falsetto! That is huge for me. For some reason D is easier than C. Go figure. DEFINITELY going to take some lessons from Carl.

I haven't been able to sing high in mixed voice yet, but I learned to sing notes that I used to yell quietly. I can sing up to F4 without yelling, but after that I still flip to falsetto. Without compression, I flip into falsetto much earlier. I guess, with time I will be able to go higher and higher and eventually connect to my head voice.

I would like to hear your comments about pushing downwards and how to strengthen your real singing muscles.
When you find these muscles working in the right way these exercises come easier an easier day by day.
You will notice that tension moves from the throat to the lower body muscles automatically and suddenly you'll find
it is easy to keep throat free.
This is not very clear for beginners

My first reaction wuz "dislike", and wuz like "maaan!... what are u doing!?!?!? U sound so overtightened and u teach this technique to the others!" It sounded suuuuuuu wrong! BUT! there is always a but =) I tried it the first time, and somehow managed to go a lot higher than the demonstration and the sensation of the sound was not even close to urs. I almost closed the video, but then gave the comments section a chance. Didn't find any similar to mine reactions.... so then i thought maybe u have a point there... Well, i tried it "ur" way, and .... it wuz like WOW! I still don't sound the way u do, but i think i've got the right sensation u were talking about - i've managed to get that compressed sound, managed to connect successfully my chest and the head, managed to go very high AND got that clean vibrato on my high notes!
Thanks for this lesson! Hope u release a set (or a programm) of vocal exercises someday - i'll be sure to buy em!

You might even be one of the more treacherous Auschwitz guards Carl. Maybe I would too lol.
I have just one question about compression, I think I understand exactly what is going on, I want to confirm by asking what total compression feels like.
Is the sensation of full 100% compression like when you are trying to push air up through your neck area but nothing is coming out? Even with my larynx relaxed. Like when acting like you are suffocating? I know its an odd question.
So once its fully closed and I push air I can slowly control how much I let out until I am fully open and can breathe as normal?
