      Super easy fix, get a cheese palte that is shorter and screw on 2 cheese bars from the bigger plate to the 2 top screwholes on the fx 3. You just use longer screws and put the cheese rods on top of the handle screwholes.

    This looks great! One thing I would change is using the nato rail pins as locating pins so you can get the same alignment every time, and make the cage that much more solid on the camera. That or having the mounting screws fixed rather than adjustable, so that it's a little more rugged.

    Hi Caleb, Just worked with the Sony FX3 Firmware 4 to discover a major change has occurred since FW 3. If a dummy battery adapter is used the FX3 monitor will display an error message. As I understand Sony did this deliberately as the Sony batteries intelligently communicate to the camera and will reduce the risk of a corrupted file should the battery die during recording. We decided to power the camera via the USB input instead.

    I already saw some comments about the issues with dummy batteries, 2 pin lemo and 3 pin fisher, sdi, battery plates, baseplate compatibility and such.
    I think the genius part of this rig is the screen holder.
    As well as the fixes I listed above, an option for a usb-c pd on the left side to plug into camera would be smart, maybe usb-c on the right side as well for prosumer gear that takes that.
    If it were possible to have user swappable power ports I think that would be amazing! Choose between lemo, dtap, and usb…etc.
    Also, a way to use “pass through power” like you see on cages for Alexa and red, where you can use XLR or other ports to power the cage without a battery. Useful for gimbal work and more.
    Other steps beyond that would be taking a page out of Tilta’s book with the CFE to SSD adapter that allows installation of NVME SSDs or USBC SSDs to use as media (and an included space in the rig to “click” it into).
    There’s a product by a company called Zitay that is a SSD enclosure to a dummy CFE-A card, something like that incorporated into a FX3 cage could work if incorporated in a good way

  • @matthewdebono862
    @matthewdebono862 Před 9 měsíci +6

    The concept is interesting, but for it to be truly "Cine" theres a few things you need to re-think about the product.
    Firsly you need more varied power outputs, such as 2pin lemo and 3pin Fischer.
    Secondly, you need more 3/8" threads than 1/4 20s, and they need to have Arri locating pins. This includes 3/8 threads on the side of the plate, so it's going to need to be taller.
    For the Base plate system, you need to think how it's going to line up with industry standard rod heights, and what plates match up to yours to take the camera to 15mm LWS height (going to studio height is easy once there). A Camera base plate isn't about just cheese plating the bottom.
    It would also be great if the batter plate is easily user swappable between V and Gold mounts (maybe it is already, if you could clarify that?)
    Lastly, and this is more of a bonus really, it would be really great if you could have an HDMI to SDI converter/splitter integrated into the back, and have SDI 2-4 SDI outputs coming out adjacent to your power outputs.
    Like I siad I find the concept for this very interesting. Your method of protecting the screen is great, and it's also great how you built the camera backwards, keeping it short and the center of mass low, and helping to offset the weight of the lenses and anything else you put on them. Your built in cable management space is also really neat and handy :)

    This would be perfect if you didn't have to gut the battery slot and implement a dummy battery. Also, as nice as this is, I go and back and forth on the actual utility of it. At this point you might as well just get an FX6 with internal NDs but then again you can strip this down and have a smaller more low-profile camera so essentially the best of both worlds.

    It looks fantastic, really does, I've been waiting for this one, but I have 2 questions
    1) Could we disassemble the DTAP ports and rotate them so that the DTaps "base" cable doesn't bend like that ? 4:54 I'm afraid the cable life will be shortened by that bend.
    2) sadly I bought the Tilta V2 cage for my FX30 since it came out, is there a way to know how much clearance there is on the CineBack to know if my cage will fit ? I really don't want to buy another cage for the cineback but I do really want it.
    thanks for this Caleb, again and again, coming out with fantastic stuff!

    • @camerafoundry
      @camerafoundry  Před 9 měsíci +3

      Thanks Andy! The D-Taps aren't able to rotate but even if they did, the cable would then go right into your hand when holding the camera grip. I'll look into a way to have a cable clip or something to keep the cable from kinking too much but we've beat these up pretty good and have had no issues yet!
      Oh and as for the Tilta cage, we may make an adapter, but I can't make any promises.

    • @AndyLSB
      @AndyLSB Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@camerafoundry that would be fantastic really, to be able to use my tilta cage and have it as compact as with the smallrig (sort of), oh and about the Dtaps, what I meant by rotating it, having it on the same right side but "upside down" so the DTap connection still is on the right side but the cable going towards the camera body, protruding on top of the vanity plate, I feel that would be a "Solution" or no ?

      @@camerafoundry When it comes to the FX3/FX30, I really like the Tilta cage and accessories more than Smallrig's offering.
      I will gladly wait for an adapter so I will keep my finger's crossed.

    Will be nicer if there is NATO or some form of quick release when attaching and detaching the cineback for gimbal work etc. Removing 3 screws is not a big deal but still quite a hassle when time is an essence.
