The Downfall of The Call Of Duty Series

  • After it's launch in 2003, Call of Duty was an instant success, going from peak to peak after every new release, all the way up until Black Ops 2, where it took the title of being one of the most successful series' in the history of gaming. However, following the release of Call of Duty Ghosts, sales and popularity has been in consistent decline, all the way up until the most recent COD - Call of Duty, Cold War. What could have caused such a downfall? Was simply the fact that people got bored over time? Was it a decline in quality? Was it the undermining of the skill gap? This, is the downfall, of the Call of Duty Series.

Honestly, being able to see how many players were on the game, map voting, scorestreaks, and especially, chatting with the enemy team and still being able to talk to them next match if no one left was what made it the best time

Exactly. The variety is gone due to the matchmaking system. Being booted after every match is a gamebreaker.
It was so much fun to recognize player names & chat with these people , or flame them or be flamed , whatever it was. At least there was some sense of competition and humanity in all of it.
They really messed up with Cold War in my opinion. Game had so much potential.

The real reason that led COD to downfall, is that Activision fired the key members that formed the original infinity ward team (Jason west, Vince Zampella). following to that, almost every member of IW resigned to support their former bosses to courts. The original IW team was responsible for cod4 and MW2 arguably the best and most innovative COD's out there, this team pushed the envelope in evey game they made ,since then COD has been in a state of recycle. no wonder the decline, lacking the masterminds that made quality their fisrt priority, . if they had these people still working for the franchise the game would be much different today.

You left out something. After modern warfare 2 was released, there was this huge feud between Activision and the founders of infinity ward. It ended with the OG devs getting fired and making a new studio called respawn (known for apex and Titanfall). That was a huge reason as to why CoD saw a decline. The people that made the games good were no longer there. Also Activision generally doesn't treat their workers properly and there have been so many cases of harassment of workers from Activision.

    • @c1453.

Activision is gonna be the reason for COD's death. All they care about is money, which they earn by satisfying the new players with easy games, cringey skins for money,... I could list a lot here. I think if Treyarch and IW (and Sledghammer) were free from such bad publishers, COD would be as good as it was in 2007-2012.

what killed CoD multiplayer for me was the switch away from player-run servers. in CoD 4 and 5 you joined a clan and played on your own server that you could customise, choose every detail about how you wanted to play, which rotation of maps, how often to change them, how many players, tweak killstreaks or remove them, have different games going on for all those options so people could pick and choose

In my opinion, the MW1-BO2 era was so good because the games were so well rounded. In almost all of those games you could pick up the game, experience a good, memorable, and captivating story, and then spend the rest of the year enjoying good multiplayer. I think once they started throwing in cookie cutter stories and streamlining multiplayer development, it was over.

Casual players who didn’t play often and didn’t put money into the games were outclassed entirely by people who dumped money into the game to get weapon variants that were objectively better. Prior games just had you level up to achieve weapons, there wasn’t an equipment gap that artificially added to the skill gap. The game industry has sold its soul to the devil of shareholder profits and Corp greed.
EA was the first sign of the times.
Now we're insulted with broken games and yearly releases of repackaged bullshit.
People hated the Exosuits and jump jump bs in AW.. "don't worry we heard you and changed the formula" then they pushed Infinite Warfare out.. no exosuits.. but the mechanic was still there
They just got rid of the exosuit off the character model.
      The rage ensued.
"Dont worry, we fiixed that and got rid of it, also people didn't like payloads, so we scrapped that"
*pushes out that piece of shit BO3*

Nowadays, as of last month i discovered DMZ (similar to Escape from Tarkov, only more forgiving) but then as of a couple of nights ago started playing Shiptment 24/7, only because i wanted to start having my own camo for my weapons and it was the quickest way to do it. I’ve been saying this as someone who has been playing since mw2, and have spent considerable time playing CoD4, Mw2, BO, MW3 and BO2 at a competitive level. It is so simple to revive this series. People want Call of Duty to be enjoyable and want to play with their friends. Fortnite in 2017/18 proved that.
To me the solution is simple -
    - Remove SBMM, or tone it down significantly
    - put fun kill streaks back in
    - remove the unnecessary 500 attachment options. Players want simplicity. 1-2 attachments like MW2 or Black Ops was the best
    - spend time developing fun maps
    - keep lobbies together after games
    - being back map voting
    - bring back OG game modes - Demolition, CTF, etc
    - Bring back Ground War
    - remove micro transactions and pay to win
    - ultimately, if CoD wants to be on the map they need to listen to their fan base and want to not take advantage of the players. It’s so simple in my mind to create a fun game again, because it’s already been done. Mw2, black ops, etc were some of the most successful because of the simplicity and fun the game was designed to be. Now it’s designed to sell you as much shit as possible

The skill gap was great. It meant that unless beeing on the very bottom of the skill level, everyone got their shot at beeing the dominating one. That’s why I, despite beeing average at best, willingly came back to the game. It’s annoying to be rekt by a chopper gunner, but then you are motivated to play more, to get matched with lower skilled players eventually. Getting better increases the probability of that happening.

Good luck trying to no scope or use noob tubes now, they are practically an art and skill to master on your own now, and if you can pull it off flawlessly match to match, you are the outliers within the community.
As for now for no scoping and quick scoping, you will have more luck on PC then console players, not that it is not a managable skill to master any more, but damn they nerfed it and is way hella hard to pull it off now, especially if you're console players, which in turn gives an unfair edge to PC players since they can be more precise.
This is what happens when the devs listens to the lower on denominators, who also happened to often be the most vocal, than the actual mass fanbase. We end up with a game made for the minority, marketed for the majority.
Is a terrible a game? No.
Is it a great game? No.
      It's an okay game.
Let's not even get started with the server issues, especially within MW 2019.
For a wealthy game developer/studios I expect better then being able to play 3 or 4 matches in a row before having to wait 10 or 15 mins between lobbies 4 to 6x in a row while transmission error code pops ups - effectively wasting an hour to an hour and a half trying to find a lobby.

Another reason for their downfall is that Call of Duty did not experiment with different physics, play styles etc.I would love to see an installment focused on realism or on alternate history.

    • @SugaryPhoenixxx
      @SugaryPhoenixxx Před 2 lety +27

I hear you & this opinion is really common from what I have seen online. But I personally disagree. I think COD started to die when they listened to people complaining that it was "more of the same" every year. COD started to die when the devs started to try different things (Like jet packs & nube toobs) I think if they would have just ignored the people who were complaining about the "samey" gameplay, they would have retained their original audience, which happened to be huge at the time. The die-hards honestly just wanted more of the same. If they wanted something different, they would have just played a different game. & once COD did change to become unrecognizable from its roots, the die-hards did indeed go & play something else. Hence why the playerbase for COD has dropped dramatically after BO2, the last "real" COD.
This is just my hot take, but that is what I observed playing thousands of hours of COD when I was young & carefree. I would have never stopped playing COD if it would have remained the same game that I fell in love with.

Advanced Warfare was the last Call of Duty I ever played. I didn’t really care for the characters or the story that much, I just enjoyed shooting people but it didn’t feel the same.

MW 2019 was a glimmer of hope.
And then the promise no microtransactions
      We all got excited.
They gave us a solid boots on the ground brawler FPS. It was great.
That lasted all of 5 minutes.
Soon as the Store was added. I knew.
Warzone was released.. and BAM. The promise broken. They shelved MW and focused on War zone. Then they pushed Black Ops crap War. Which honestly just pissed on the ashes of BO1/2 which were some of the best CoDs ever made. And a warzone update for Vamguard broke MW2019 COMPLETELY. The game is literally unplayable now.. EVEN THE CAMPAIGN. How's that even possible?
So I have ZERO faith in Activision, Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Raven. Atleast Raven makes a beautiful game with good story.. but Activision molests that into a dumpster fire.
Save your money brotha.. CoD is dead.. and it's been dead since Advanced Warfare.
This shit show isn't the call of duty that everyone loved.

The community is always devided and never knows what they want. The cheapness of early CoD games will never catch on nowdays. Shooting at spawn would make people complain and call the game "trash". Some games have the advantage of being able to improve mechanics and listen to Audience like Spiderman: Miles morales, but shooting games dont
I've actually had the opportunity to speak and get to know game developers and the time it takes to sharpen graphics and even make the game is insane. You're spot on about removing the skill gap and making the game less fulfilling. MW2 was the first one I played online. I got it months after it was released and I was terrible at it. The highest k/d ratio I had was like 0.79 but when I had a good game it felt awesome. In terms of killstreaks I think the best I did was get a chopper gunner like 4 times. I had mates who had like 100 nukes by the time the game was winding down. I got BO1 on it's release and grinded out and was good at it. Personally BO1 is my favourite simply because I was the best of my friend group at it. I had a k/d ratio of like 3.something and I was getting chopper gunners and dogs near enough every game. I had friends who were massive MW2 stans and they hated BO1 because they were better at MW2. I guess it's each to their own really, you prefer what you're better at. I personally got frustrated at MW2 for the nube-tubing and 360 no scopes, etc. I felt BO1 was a lot better for cutting that out. Again, I guess it just depends what you prefer. I felt BO1 had a better single player and it also had zombies so that tipped it for me. That being said, I think MW2 and BO1 are definitely the best CODs in terms of online gameplay. I really enjoyed the WAW campaign although I never played it online. Was it BO2 where they had the Alcatraz zombie mission? That was really fun when playing with a group of your mates but I thought the campaign and online modes were dogshit and I'm pretty sure that's the last COD I ever played.

The idea of boost jumping is a skill gap in a controlled environment like bo3 or IW even though I hated IW. AW is just randomness it’s the randomness that lowers the skill gap. If anybody can be anywhere at any time you’re going to have a lot of players who aren’t good getting kills just being anywhere shooting people in the back and sides. This is why MW 2019 is the the absolute least skilled game of all time. Not just because of just quick ttk but randomness. So many windows, lanes and random areas in the map for anyone to get a kill. I think the one on one gunfight in AW does take skill because of the boost jumping but in a public match setting, it’s randomness is deterring

CZcamsrs like ggreloaded and murdashow saying they can never fix the map and spawns issues in vanguard and mw (they can if they add a map maker )always trashing mw Piccadilly and vanguard maps , people say we want this other say we don't want it in the game the devs don't know how to satisfy this community and provide good games , you have people like mrsoldierhd and chainsfeeed showing video of how to exploit spawns on rust how to camp in MW how to exploit sbmm in cold war, you have CZcamsrs like raidaway and other how never say their opinions and keep buying games ever year(Activision keep doing annual release I know they have to do it to keep their CZcams channel but we need to stop buying games so they stop annual release) and Activision plays a big role in this franchise they are forcing devs to release the game unfinished and rushed cod need to stop annual release and have all the devs teams work on a big cod game and the release for cod should be 4-5 rather than ever year.
The devs don't know what to do. Because they get how much criticism from diffrent direction they don't know what's right and what's wrong Infinity ward and sledgehammer should not listen to this community and do what they want to do and be passionate which what infinity ward are doing and slegdehammar should do the same.
