  • Have you ever wondered what Greg Koch thinks when picking out a guitar for himself? In this week's episode of Greg's Pick, Greg plays through a few delicious Telecasters from the Fender Custom Shop -- a Dealer Select Wildwood "10" 1955 Telecaster Heavy Relic, a Dealer Select Wildwood "10" 1951 Nocaster Heavy Relic, a Dealer Select Wildwood "10" 1962 Custom Telecaster Relic, and a Dealer Select Wildwood "10" 1961 Telecaster Relic. Which will he choose??

    i was surprized at the end he picked the one he did. It looked like he was getting the most out of the `barf green` one. Maybe it was the lower action he mentioned made him play a little faster and more slippery. He made em all sound great as far as that goes.

    To my ears, the 51 Nocaster is the clear winner and seems to fit perfectly to Greg Koch's playing style. His playing even seems to have more kick, if that's possible, when he's playing that one. Maybe just the more focused sound that he describes. The question is: What pickups are in there? I've seen some Nocasters with Nocaster pickups, while many others have twisted tele pickups and others with a mix. Nothing about what pickups are in that one? Also, he mentioned action affecting tone, but also pickup height relative to the strings will impact tone among other things too long to list. As far as tone wood on a solid body guitar is concerned though: I'm with Scott Grove on that one.

    I'd like to know if Greg thinks the different "tone woods" in the guitar affect the sound of the guitar, when it is amplified like this. Does he feel or hear the difference between the rosewood and the maple fretboards ? I'm interested to hear what Greg has to say about this, because I trust his judgement.

    I agree with most the Green sounded the best. If you are going for a Tele tone the green is the top gun. However, I dont think i would select, the second best is the "62" Gregs pick. I like the way it looks and more versatile in the mix.

  • @stratdoc
    @stratdoc Před rokem

    I bought a nocaster because Mike Campbell was playing one. It is still the one I grab first. Julian Lage does his deep down the Jazz path. Then this guy Koch reinvents it with his Reverend with his Fishman pups. I’am too attached to go there. I do have one with a Lollar mini in the neck. Still you can’t stray far from this formula for long.

  • @yeahyeahyeahyeahwhatever

    Just like I wrote it, man. Every word expressed exactly what I thought about each guitar and each pickup. And I, also, would have picked the '62. Too much scooped mids on the others being my primary issue but it also looks the prettiest to me. My own Tele is a 2017 '59 NAMM Ltd (Not Lotto) JRN, Olympic with nice reliced cracking but no major relicing showing and a AAA Brazilian RW board. HW Twisted Neck and HW OBG Bridge.

    So the '51 Nocaster has a smaller '52 neck profile and the '62 Custom has a neck that feels like a larger '51 U? Confusing.
    I think the '62 had the most balanced tone so I can totally understand Greg's reasoning, but I have to confess that I do prefer the look of a Nocaster. I'm just not a fan of rosewood boards.
