Depends on the locomotive: a freight train could be doing 3 mpg. It the locomotive has 1200 gallon tank, that means it can cover 400 miles before refueling. There is a filler port on the side (depending on the operator, might be both sides). The hose coupling twist-locks into the port and the fuel gets pumped in: it's something like a fire hose, but well protected.

This is wrong. After the National Electric Grid, It is next to impossible to have a continuous power breakdown with Railway infrastructure unless the complete grid collapses. Even in worst natural disasters, electric supply can be resorted withing 24-48 hours.
When we say electricity is environmental friendly energy it is applicable to renuable like wind, solar and hydro and never coal, oil or nuclear electricity.

One correction Pandey ji, electric loco is always more powerful than diesel loco but lits oading pull capacity is less than diesel engine. Electric engine get power from power plant which is situated somewhere outside the logo. Hence loco can draw as much voltage possible hence power can be drawn. But since there is no captive engine in loco it is lighter. Hence it's load pulling capacity gets limited. So electric loco is more suitable for passenger train which is having less load than freight train. Due to more power there will be better acceleration which is important requirement of passenger train.
In case diesel loco since captive power plant is in loco only,hence there is limitation in power generation and weight becomes more. Hence load pulling capacity traction is more than electric loco. So this diesel loco becomes ideally suitable for goods train where load pulling capacity is important factor

@@elliotsealpup4101 burning cols heat the water to make pressuruzed stem and those stem is fed to turbine which is connected to big generators which starts to rotate and produce electricity, And then those electricity come to railway engine.
The reason that Diesel locos are powerful than electric ones is incorrect! A Diesel locomotive does not use an internal combustion engine like a diesel car !, It actually uses a generator to convert the energy to electricity...and then run the motors ....it would actually be inefficient to do energy conversion and also would reduce lot of weight on the loco if it is directly run on Electricity.
The reason why you still need Diesel locomotive is for contingency in event of power failure due to any reason...and also to ply trains in inhospitable terrains..where electric traction may be an expensive affair ....

In the situation of Emergencies like War, Breakdown, natural disasters etc, Diesel Locomotives are much reliable. It is very interesting to know that Diesel Locomotives are more energetically efficient and have less Carbon Footprint than that of Electrical Locomotives with additional advantage of cheap in operational cost. There are very less Establishment cost too for deisel locomotives.
But the matter is
"Huge Import Bill of Petroleum" and our commitment towards control of Climate Changes.

Yes sir I agree with you when delhi power grid failure were held on 2012 30th July All the trains metro and every thing which run with electricity stops for 2 days and train like rajdhani,shatabadi,doronto trains are stopped on yamuna bridge crossing approaching towards delhi so the diesel engines are coupled with those trains and help them to reach to the sation and the other trains also . And not delhi also but also other states also get affected like uttarpradesh,Punjab,haryana,bihar,jharkhand, madhayapradesh and many more in those condition only disel engine is helpful .

That's OK for remote regions, but it is quite expensive compared with proper power stations.
It is wrong to assume that diesel engines will continue as it is. Firstly there is nothing called a Diesel locomotive. Diesel- Electric Locomotives are essentially Electric locomotives only but with their own power generation plant on board which is a high torque two stroke multi cylinder (usually 16-18 cylinders) diesel engine.
Indian Railways has basically two makes of diesel locomotives, Alco (which are the most popular ones usually red or orange coloured ones featuring in movies) and Elctro-Motive Diesel (EMD). Both are American companies. Alco made its engines in the 60-70s and EMD in 90s. Indian Railways own production Subsidairy Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) which started in 1961 at Banaras and later became Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW). BLW makes the current generation of Diesel Locomotives which are all varients of original Alco and EMD Locomotives as BLW holds licensed manufacturing. Apart from these there are Henchel, GE and few GM locomotives as well. The BLW Varanasi plant is converting most of the old diesel electric engines to pure electric engines only by removing the diesel engine and adding the overhead power supply mechanism as in conventional electric locomotives.
It is wrong to say that diesel engines are more powerful. This is because in both Diesel and Electric engines, it is the electric 3 phase induction motor which provides power. So essentially both have equal power output as the Electric motors have same ratings for similar class locomotives. However, there is also a problem of slippage in trains due to the tracks and wheels both being metal. So to prevent slippage weight is added to the engine. In this respect the deisel locomotives because they already have a heavy engine on board are heavier therefore have less slippage than electric locomotives.
The plan of railways is to intoduce new class of locomotives which will have heavy weight and higher traction power and also emergency back up on board in case of power failure. The 12000 Hp WAG 12 Engines are first of such engines. It is two engines combined as one similarly other locomotives are also being designed. Use of diesel engines in case of power failure is not a valid argument because now the country is connect with a National Power grid and in a few years the complete national Grid will have so robust mechanisms that ther will not be a possibility of a power failure unless the complete grid collapses the chances of which are next to zero. Also the Power supply will have Solar power reserve with batteries on board the locomotives.
As far as conventional Diesel Electric locomotives is concerned, so the truth is that they will be phased out. We might see them used for shunting purpose (that too with electric monitoring systems will no longer be required) for few more years. But yeah, this is the begining of the end of Diesel Locomotives.

In train crash scenarios tracks as well as electrical equipments/poles both can get damaged. It's possible that tracks are repaired sooner but poles need concrete casting at bases so might need few more days and thus electric locomotives can't operate till then. So diesel locomotives can be used in such situation.

किसी दुर्घटना की स्थिति में पटरियाँ व बिजली के खंभे दोनों ही बुरी तरह क्षतिग्रस्त हो सकते हैं। पटरियाँ तो फिर भी जल्दी रिपेयर की जा सकती है क्योंकि हर हिस्सा बना बनाया आता है उसको फिट करना है बस। जबकि बिजली के खंभे जमीन में कंक्रीट के फाउंडेशन में सेट किये जाते हैं, और कंक्रीट को 7-8 दिन तो लगेगा ही सेट होने में और लाइन उतने दिन बाद ही चालू हो पाएगी।
इसीलिए पटरी ठीक होने के बाद डीजल इंजिन से ट्रेन सेवा चालू कर दी जाती है, और 10-15 दिन बाद वापस से इलेक्ट्रिक इंजन का परिचालन चालू हो जाता है।

Look up IORE. Also, WAG-12. Some diesels have high tractive effort, but that's only at creeper speeds. And there are no diesels much over 6000 HP that I've seen in operation. Highest IC horsepower was GTEL about 8500 HP I think.
