The cassowary is a behemoth of the bird world (second-heaviest, behind the ostritch). They can grow to over six and a half feet tall, weigh well over 100 pounds, and gallop around at speeds of over thirty miles per hour - an impressive feat for a creature with legs that might best be described as "death-cudgels with knives attached." The middle toe on each one features a dagger-like claw that can grow up to five-inches long.

probably it is this human fear that prompts the bird to attack
suppose if YOU, the Human charges at it like a beserker, the cassowary will be very frightened.
Or if you are trained at karate, just charge at it and give this bird bastard a flying roundhouse kick to its head
Not if your mind and body is trained like KRAVEN the hunter from Spiderman comics. That bastard fights with wild animals
I admire that man's composure. He manages to not show fear but without looking too threatening, tries to walk away without it seeming like he's trying to escape. These wattled horrors may look funny but they are deadly.
LOL. His composure was simply the result of his ignorance. Pretty sure that guy had never heard of cassowaries before
They aren't horrors, they're animals. Yes, they are deadly but they aren't monsters, they are simply territorial. They should be respected and given space. Humans push into the territories of other creatures and then complain when said creature reacts instinctively to what it perceives as a home invasion.

During 1967 near Cairns, a cassowary chased down and attacked two girls riding along a road on a motorbike. I was only 10 at the time so I don't remember the full details of the outcome but it was a front page.headline the next day. I was holidaying there for a few weeks with my parents. I myself was bitten by the savage Green Tree Ants while leaning casually against a tree and also smacked hard in the temple by a giant flying beetle, a Rhinocerois Beetle I think. Having to go to the toilet at the caravan park ablutions block at night was an actual nightmare. I had to pick my way through a carpet of giant cane toads leaping and flopping all around me. I could see them launching in my circle of torchlight and hear their weight flopping as they landed on the wet soil around me in the dark croaking their protests. I am very happy for the glorious and amazing, very necessary, rain forest to exist in the world and desperately want it to be saved and not fail under the pressure of population, climate change and commercialism...but...it is not my favourite dwelling environment. That dude on the beach looked at one of Nature's executioners in the eye. Now, THAT is scary. Cassowaries are very dangerous, as well as unpredictable.
Do you even know what an executioner does? There are two general definitions: One deals with carrying out a plan or order while the other deals with the punishment of death of a condemned person. If we adapt the 2nd definition, we could say to execute someone is to put someone down or kill someone who is already destined for death or "screwed." Indeed that's the only way this bird can effectively use its weapons to kill--if its target is already wounded or on the ground. If a healthy, able-bodied man were to fight one of these things head on, the man would most likely win.

To those comparing the cassowary to velociraptor, I should remind you that velociraptor was about the size of a turkey. I’d be much more afraid of a cassowary (4 times bigger).
A velociraptor was the size of a car. What are you talking about?
Velociraptors was indeed the size of a turkey. What you see in movies (jurassic park) those are not velociraptors, they are more like Deinonychus, but they decided to use the name "velociraptor" because it was a cooler name :)

Beautiful video. Nice contrast of colors.
Amazing video and very thrilling as I know how powerful and bad tempered these beautiful birds can be - It's a good thing you didn't turn your back on it!
God they were lucky. Those things are living dinosaurs, and they have been known to kill people just for making eye contact for too long. This one must have been calm and/or not felt threatened just yet. It's not out of the ordinary for animals to just be curious, but most of the time territorial instinct will take over and this would have played out like a scene from Jurassic Park
It wasn't calm it kept stalking the guy it wanted to attack just waiting for the right moments, specially when you turn your back on one
The last recorded death from a Cassowary was 1926 and that was in self defence of itself
Clever girl
No, you're supposed to maintain eye contact because the bird knows it will get fucked up if it attacks you head on. Humans are more of a threat to them than they are to us and they know it. Even without a weapon we can still kill one with our bare hands, whereas all the bird has is its talons.
You stare that thing down and let it know you aren't weak and you're not afraid to fight. Only the strong and the cunning survive in nature and animals know this better than anyone, it's in their instincts.
No it's not "luck", these birds are low threat to humans, and stating they're dinosaurs is pointless because so is every other bird species. There are plenty of videos of humans getting close to these things and no one ever got hurt or died to them. Birds are the only known surviving dinosaurs and they are no longer apex predators.
So glad I watch casual geographic and know that this beast is a modern velociraptor
For all the crocodile hunters in the comments section saying these people are stupid I have a news flash for you, the last thing you do to a predator fronting on you is turn around and run away or freak out, the did exactly the right thing they stood their ground they remained calm and they respected the birds personal space

That landscape looked incredible and the Cassowary was icing on the cake. You're lucky to live there AND lucky that dude walked away with his arteries intact.

Someone: "Looks like it can do some damage."
Camera guy: "Yeah, they can."
Also camera guy: Voluntarily goes closer to film it.
The cassowary isn't out right aggressive. Just confidently curious and dominant. The self occupied preening at times is a gesture of allaying fear. The kick gesture in the second episode is only half hearted reminder of dominance. Overall this potentially lethal bird is cool and seeking a margin of interaction.
Yea it seems like that. So whats the best strategy with them? Standing, facing towards them and slowly going Backwards?
Stand sideways to a cassowary, never face-on to one.
He was a irritated because the stupid human was following him and the guy told him to go with the others and he wasn’t listening. The bird clearly saw him turn his back to him and so he went for it glad heartedly. The man should’ve put his WHOLE front to him… what idiots
@@georgehunter2813hahahah NO! you walk backwards slowly.
@@katelynnsoard6870 Your talking about how to withdraw in general. When within striking range the lower belly, throat, and neck must be safeguarded from a cassowary leg kick. Turning sideways to the bird reduces vulnerability immediately.
hi Susan, i know, it was really incredible to have had such an encounter. one thing that people dont realize when they see the video is that the cassowary came from out of nowwhere, and was exploring, so it wasnt the cas' territory, thats prob why not agressive; if you run away or make sudden moves the bird will be even more curious and follow you and maybe attack, when i said something towards the end, the bird lost interest immediately, so just makes me wonder why was so curious about me...
The guy was oblivious that the blue and white towel over his shoulder made him look like a Cassowary.
The fact that a wild animal approaches you to inspect you instead of trying to avoid you shows that he does know he can deal with you easily.
That Cassowary clearly didn't think it was worth the time of attacking. 0_0
Animals don't care about time, it's the threat of what it was facing that mattered. A Cassowary would only attack a human if it felt cornered or if it thought the human was weak. We're bigger and stronger than these birds and so they rely on sneaky tactics like waiting until we turn our backs before striking. Otherwise it knows it's too risky to attack and will eventually leave.

Unfortunately in Australia the Cassowary is on the endangered list with only 1200 left in the wild due to the increase of feral pigs in the rainforest which destroys it natural habitat and also dog attacks.
I wonder if this cassowary is sick. It looks confused o.O
I think the guy did everything for the most part right personally. I don't see him as trying to approach the Cassowary, but rather the Cassowary approached him.. The guy didn't run and turn his back which would have possibly triggered an attack.
As for the Cassowary, it wasn't hissing, or snarling, or showing any of the behaviors associated with territoriality or aggression, but rather, curiosity. I firmly doubt the Cassowary was interested in harming him. so much so, that he might have been able to get away with just standing there motionless [covering his stomach and throat] till it left.
Having said all that, this is the most dangerous, unpredictable, aggressive bird on the planet here and anything can happen. I think the only thing he did wrong was be in a position where the Cassowary was within easy arms reach. I'd have maintained at least 200m clearance personally.
***** they can swim too.
Ratel3000 I particularly appreciate the "covering his stomach and throat" bit haha
+LivingCorpseX Yeah, faster than us. So, I think it was intentionally leading him to the ocean.
+Ratel3000 The cassowary was absolutely approaching him. With a threatening posture. Backing up while facing it was exactly the right thing to do - however, every time the cassowary backed off, he stopped. He should have *continued* to back away after the cassowary stopped approaching him.
The way that the bird raised itself up and arched its head is a territorial threat display, telling the man to back away. That is a prelude to more aggressive behaviour. Coupled with the sporadic preening the cassowary engaged in, it's a sign of a tense, anxious bird who wants the human to back the fuck up and give it space.
Please don't forget that posture plays a huge part in determining bird behaviours.
Fair enough. Keep in mind he shouldn't have let himself get that close to him in the first place.
he's the same type of person who'd intentionally poke animals and watch them get aggressive

Greg has three of these in his backyard
I don't think they approached it on purpose. It obviously came up to them out of curiosity. What are you supposed to do in that situation? They all acted carefully and tried their hardest not to make any sudden movements. The guy with the camera even told the guy next to the cassowary to regroup with everyone else that was probably behind the camera. The only reason the guy next to the cassowary hadn't already done so was probably because the cassowary was repeatedly approaching him, and was somewhat standing in between him and the others.
