After a few weeks of work, Martin the Subaru from The Grand Tour is now back in the game! He has been painted, now has a legal exhaust and some refurbished gold wheels to boot. Although, he coughed up one last hurdle that could have ended in disaster.

I just watched a professional auto shop team do the most boring driveway-quality tune up job on a mass produced car that was once used by a cool guy for a TV show. The only exciting or excited thing about this show is the presenter, and I can't be the only one getting tired of him.
If you care at all about the people that watch this channel then you will stop accepting sponsorship from CarVertical because you are literally SCAMMING people on their behalf. They are the most overpriced and useless car check website in existence, have you ever even tried it yourself? There are many others that are far better for far less money. Stop helping these criminals rob people.
I appreciate Hammond had said you were keeping the prang on the hood, but then you shouldn't have had all the wheels and the paint and panels made to look imaculate, it doesn't look like a generally clean car with a bit of a history, now it just looks like a car where someone sat on the bonnet posing on the forecourt
Agreed
It seems so wrong to keep that dented bonnet. Lots of other work and improvements but leaving the bonnet?… no…
What about the dent in the hood? That kinda stands out like a real sore spot now with the rest of it being sorted.
With Richard driving the chances of a dent in the roof will make the bonnet dent insignificant.
I think they said they want to keep it
They will keep it, its a clear link back to the show.
it’s like having a chipped front tooth
@@ADAM_CAMMA Haaa... yeah I suppose it could be.
Don’t know how I feel about using the original dented bonnet
yeah, looks so bad
My thoughts exactly, now it feels only 98% finished... I dont get why they fixed everything but that dent. Plz drivetribe, give Martin that last piece of love!
It's like a wart on a beautiful woman. I couldn't look away. Please fix the dent! It sticks out like a sore thumb.
@@dutchdelight5556 yeah, I saw some rusty corners with peeling paint on the front quarter panels when they were attaching the bumper skin as well that looked bad against the fresh parts
saving up for Carbon
all that work and not fixing the hood seems like a waste
It’s character
Agreed, it makes no sense.
Exactly. Also, the front wings have been left rusty, it's a bit of a half arsed job.
If only it had a fresh bonnet as well
And brake calipers
No. You might as well give captain Hook his hand back or plastic surgery to Harry Potter (terrible example, not a fan) but you get me. Without that dent, it's just a restored car. Might as well peel off the Martin Racing livery. Come on, let it have a dent.
@@Willzyx88I disagree. If you didn’t know the context of the dent it just looks like trash. Plus I bet Captain Hook would have his hand back if he could chose.
You can’t see the dent when you’re driving it. And driving it is what it’s all about. I’m surprised their are so many snowflakes getting offended with a dent in a bonnet.
@@andtime4918 offended is a funny word to use. Calm down sunshine.
Sooo close but why stop there? Should refurb the brake calipers, fix/replace the bonnet and I spotted some surface rust on the front arches where it meets the bumper.
The rust on the arches should definitely have been addressed, at least.
And don’t forget the over spray on the bonnet scoop fins at 10:34.
Yea weird, I saw that front wing rust too. When the front bumper is off the wings just bolt on/off quite easily too. Changed mine due to rot two years ago!
This is one of the most shocking resto videos I've seen. Aside from the obvious crater that's still in the bonnet, when the bumper is fitted at 2:21 you can still see that the leading edge of the arches on both wings are still showing visible signs of rust, air bubbles under the new spoiler decals. What's the point in partially painting the car and not doing a proper job while it's stripped and in a paint booth, then half-arsing the finish?
Feels like this whole video series had very little to do with an actual resto, and just feels like content for the sake of ad revenue and clicks.
not just air bubbles under the decals, but its not even lined up correctly.. even if we give them the benefit of the doubt for the hood/bonnet, that they might want to keep it to show history of the car. the decals not being lined up on a rare model like this is a joke.
Agreed. Look at the state of the front spoiler underside. Still has dirt and grime all over it. What a joke. I reckon half the people in this Comment section could do better and that includes me. I've built cars for 35 years. That's no "Restoration". I'd be ashamed of it.
Torque GT shouldn’t be on anyone’s list as a restoration shop, maybe just as a dealer. Then take that car you bought through them and run away to another shop for restoration.
Possibly an unfair representation of Torque GT as they were possibly on a budget or did this FOC for the advertising but the restoration is definitely on the poor quality end. I mean we all do work to a budget and I know I personally don’t have 20k to refurb my Subaru but then again I’m not on CZcams showing the world what a great job I’m doing
This car should have been done at the smallest cog and done right.
And that brake job, must have shares in copper grease 😂
As I feared, it looks like it was a half-arsed job. Glad I'm not a paying customer because I'd be after necks.
because this was done purely for ad revenue lol
The customer is Hammond and that's what he wanted.
dented hood hurt me every time it appeared on camera :(
:'(
That rear bumper was scraped underneath, front wing has chips. Hmmm. Just like that Mondeo ST paintjob!
All that work and you leave a dented hood. Come on.
That's what the customer wanted.
All that work but no new bonnet 😭
The car deserves a straight hood, and the bent one belongs on the wall as a trophy! Have fun, eagerly anticipating the rest of the build😊
I thought it needed to be restored not just refreshed.
Although the headlights were polished, they look very tired
The "That will do job". Why not respray the spoiler? The decal ghost @ 12:03 lines up so well.
In my mind mind, "the why not?" is the whole point. This isn't an unspecific Subaru getting a face-lift. This is Martin Racing dented bonnet from Grand Tour Subaru geting a flash new suit. Change the mug would be like giving it botox.
yeah, this is not a "restoration" at all.....
@@Willzyx88 the decal wasnt lined up, theres no excuse for that.
Need to re-paint the calipers too! Loving it :)
it wouldn't of left Smallest Cog in that condition. Shocking tbf.
Wouldn't have*😒
Yes, I'm a grammar "Notsee".
Well, dented hood, bubbled plate, and dust EVERYWHERE... I'll do the work myself, thanks, and give it a little bit of cleaning before fitting things.
Car vertical must have lots of money. They are the biggest supporter of every car related channel I watch on YT. not just Drivetribe.
Yeah because it's a mega cash cow, the turnover and profit margin would be astronomical
You seen their prices?
They are rolling in it.
Absolute thieves.
That an whey food, sick of them will never use something thats rammed down yer throat
Why would you not repaint the callipers😬
The engine is going to need a new tune regardless. Going from a catless exhaust to a catted one will cause way to much back pressure for its current tune. When i removed the cat on my WRX, It needed to be retuned for the change in pressure. So likewise, Martin will need a updated tune. At 10:52 , i suspect the reason they didnt show the dash was because it popped a check engine light right away.
If it wasn't tuned in the first place (idk the history of this car) it will be fine. Gd wrx's don't care about intake and exhaust mods.
Pretty sure the car was made with a catylitic converter, and someone just removed it at some point (probably sold it to make some money).
@@rhysbertrand8903 it was tuned on the grand tour episode it was in.
@@BeardedFrogand you know that how??? Source: trust me bro
@@AHomelessDorito I watched the episode?
Looks great! Personally, I think you should fix the dent in the bonnet and get rid of the windshield banner.
Bonnet yes,banner no
It Wouldn't be martin without the banner
Banner stays. Subarus need one and this is the perfect one.
When this started, we expected a MINT restoration. But it’s just turned into a “Blag” series… Which is a little bit of a shame.
You'd give Indiana Jones plastic surgery to remove the scars from his chin. It's called character, boy.
@@Willzyx88 No, it's called saving money...
"Blag" restorations seem to be the theme of this channel. At least when Mike lets them be done outside the Small Cog.
It was literally stated "we are not going for mint condition with Martin, just to keep him going"...
@@jorismak Episode 1: “Richard wants a proper job on this..”
So. 🤫
Beautiful job, but let down by keeping the dented bonnet.
Half a job Harry springs to mind 🫣
Classic spot for the brake line. If I guessed it right you guys are in for a wild ride. Technically, removing the rear seat cover should be enough, having seen a few rusty bits and bobs on Subaru now, I'd suggest to just lower the rear axle and fuel tank down a little bit, makes everything far easier. 🙂
To the guy that replied, but later deleted his comment. "How can the broken piece of brake line, you can't get to, just fall off and lay there?"
True to its Rallye heritage the Subaru's brake lines run inside the car, and exit the cabin underneath the right rear passenger seat. A few centimeters after this rubber grommet covered exit hole there is a double connector, connecting both inside brake lines, with the outside ones going to their respective rear brake caliper. Thing is this is a place these cars tend to collect rust anyways, add a little bit of carelessness when working on these parts, or vibrations, or simply time or abuse and these lines start leaking or just pop.
You can access this small piece he showed, because there is a gap in between the diff brace, the fuel tank and the under-body. But unfortunately it isn't enough space to really work on anything there, not even talking about the break lines running very close to the tank.
Hope that explanation helps :)
2:22 looks like rust on the corner of the wheel well. I thought this was going to be treated?
The fact you've left that bonnet with that dent in it is making my blood pressure rocket.
The only thing this episode is missing is Mr May shouting "S T A N D A R D" at the end 🤭😂
The front arches are still rusty...looks like half a job to me.
thats all these channels ever do. Journalists paying others to do the work=these videos. generally i try to stick to channels where they actually do the work themselves, saves the frrustration with half arsed projects.
@@proudofyourroots9575 Precisely. I wasn't impressed when they did the rear arches, should've had new ones welded in as they don't remove it all. Speaking from experience. I just hope torque GT treat their customers better.
@@ryanhall2750 yeah id say its down to the channel doing everything to a budget (always sponsored) rather than the people they pay being bad at it. probs get some sort of discount too.
Its just like some attempt at cashing in on the mighty car mods type scene, without actually doing the work.
I bet if you look into half of these channels they will be funded /owned by the same background people.
Atleast they kinda listened and this wasnt a 12 min ad this time 😂😂
I am guessing the bonnet bolts must be seized 👀😅
Always loved HKS, they make great exhausts, they make great suspension components, they also make air filters.
I’d have given that sump guard a bit if a clean when it was off
I have the same model in a lowly WRX version, so I find it very interesting to see what you guys are doing with this resto.
Great start to the video all those beautiful cars then Mike's grubby shoes.
Why leave the bonnet and fit a number plate full of bubbles
It was the protective film - as on all new number plates straight from the suppliers
I almost sold my 05' Sti that I bought new for my RCF that I have. Then after a couple weeks I couldn't do it. Something about subies is just awesome. I like seeing videos like this because it makes me realize how special of a car it is.
THE DENT STAYS 🤟 this isnt a showroom car anyway- let it have character
iirc, on the gt episode, it should have a little front lip on the bumper, which was broken while hammond racing on the frozen lake circuit. any plans to reattach the front lip?
Carvertical, the real MVP of cartube sponsorships ❤️
Shinny new wheel paint but not the brake calipers. Need to get that done.
I love the last season of TGT. We want more!!!
That bump on the bonnet is such an eyesore now.
Wow ...check the highly polished ding on the bonnet!!! Spectacular. 😂
what about the bonnet dented
Whoever decided to keep the bonnet dent...ridiculous decision, it's such an eyesore now that the rest is immaculate
Bonnet totally spoils it
Please don't crash this one mate
Should have installed a roll cage 😂
Well it is Hammond
Don't let Hammond take it on a swiss hill climb.
That stock cat is killing me so bad
@mikeyBIA same. Literally no point modifying a car and Then expecting 500hp on a stock cat and Mike saying his neighbours hate him and the exhaust was too loud….. the whole point of owning a impretser (since nobody can say it correctly over here) is cuz you want something loud and Asbo that’s also stupidly fast. if you want something quiet get a Prius or a Tesla not a Subaru Impreza
Sounds shocking now, lost its character in my opinion
@@ryanwilson1723 sounded shocking in the grand tour too, dare I say it slightly worse if anything
I keep getting recommended this so i finally watched only to see them do a half job
Joining in the chorus: “fix the dented bonnet!!!!”
Silent Hi Power is an awesome system, no drone at 70 MPH but sounds amazing on full chat!
ah I use south west wheel repairs too as they are near me in Exeter. Always an awesome job doing wheels.
Cool to watch!!
12:05 , they fitted the late 04 - 07 STi badge, and not the cherry blossom one :P
sounds like Martin wanted to be sure he was fixed btw rear seats come out for that brake line might as well deep clean interior right?
That white Legacy @ 2:38 looks amazing! Do a video about it please!
This video got me thinking that we barely see the 3 together anymore.
There should be one or two videos a year reviving "Conversation street".
New Grand Tour episode came out on the 16th.
Been seeing one of these local to me recently... looks so mint!
With regards to Martin, what's happening about the bonnet? Seems odd to do all the work restoring it, making it look sweet but leaving that dent really sticks out!
9 mins talking 3 mins showing the work 1 min ad
Drive Adtribe
Did we actually see any work being completed 😂
That hood dent is the #1 reason why I have OCD
Lol looks like the hulk opened that bonnet and got a little overzealous on the squeeze power😂
Are they keeping the bonnet like that?? Also does it still have equal length headers? Couldn't really hear the subie rumble
All these comments about leaving the dented bonnet but yet nobody noticed the front wing corners missing paint and rusty, the ghosting on the spoiler, brake caliepers, and the plethora of other quite noticable imperfect areas. This is clearly not a full restoration and more of a quick lash up to deal with the damage and rust that would affect the ability of getting an MOT.
Martin and a shiny new cannon. His old one was looking a bit sad. He's a new man! 😂
5:20, who cheaped out on the cleates!
Get that bonnet dent out for Martins sake!!! 😂😂
Full send right away
The Boost Controlled Performance X500R is a nice stock location turbo you might want to consider... I have one myself.
9:09 Mike auditioning for a new career as a heavy.
The wheels look great
well done! I also like the license plate. 12:14 oof the hood
Kind of funny how these videos are longer than the ones on the top gear channel of the trios old days
tbh, I would like to see not only Mike, but Richard drive it stock for a while. To feel the car and understand how much horsepower would be nice for their taste.
Dive straight into wet sanding to get rid of the orange peel, get rid of the rust on the front wheel arches and the horridly bubbled number plate and for goodness sakes, replace his hood. Martin deserves to actually be finished. I hear people and no, I don’t think the dented hood is a salute to his travails on his travels. The Martin windscreen name tags is all that’s needed to say, I am “The Martin”. Give the poor guy a real finish and let him be glorious. Maybe dust him as well. Shameful lack of attention to detail Drivetribe.
All the car guys wishing they had a workshop like that, and a budget to just buy new parts. Must be nice! 😀
The dent in the bonnet triggers me no end, but i read that's what the boss wanted to keep.
Looks amazing, though as everyone else has mentioned, please fix the dent
My girls bugeye has been dead for years due to emissions but they just got rid of emissions all together recently and I couldn’t be more excited to get back into it 😈
I know no one asked but both her and I have been real sad to be without her subie I’m so excited.
Still need to fix that dented bonnet. It just really stands out. How would you rate it at the Smallest Cog, think it would loose points for body work.
The bonnet!! For all it would take plus get a new number plate.
Surprised the brembos didnt have any seized bolts. Pretty common on these cars even if they werent driven on salty roads.
I myself have recently bought a complete stock uk type sti blobeye and am undecided whether to keep it stock or modify it
As a 2004 STI owner who had the HKS Hi-power catback, I hated the drone and got modified exhaust tickets multiple times (even with the stock catted downpipe).
Random unrelated questions that probably won’t get answered.
Those both relate to the “Middle East Special”.
When you (Hammond), May, and Clarkson were in Iraq, you went to an amusement park. In the special, they show footage of Hammond riding the alpine coaster. Do you remember what the name of the coaster was? Did Clarkson and May ride it as well?
a before and after of the Subaru's performance would be mint, could even set a laptime somewhere and do a bet for more than X amount of seconds gained with the tune, and that bet could be resolved in another video
What was that paste they put on the brake pads and disks? Is that just for ease of installation and it will be worn of later?
Not sure the laws in the UK regarding catt converters and emissions and being a Japanese spec car I would’ve put on high flow cat converter at lease that way it can breathe out better in my opinion
@jkl_916 and it’ll then be theft proof from catalysts that chop and steal them from time to time
All that work and you kept that beater hood lol
I would not have reused the dented bonnet
Wow, this restoration series just keeps getting better and better!
My OCD is having a hard time with the dent in the bonnet! But nice job on these videos very enjoyable!
How did it go through the MOT with that sunstrip on? I thought they weren't allowed as they cover the swept area.
all that money and effort and you left that bonnet dent
I understand wanting to make it clear that this is Richard’s car from GT but the dented hood AND the Martin Racing decal are too much in my opinion. Either keep the dents and get rid of the decal or vice versa. Personally would prefer Martin Racing and no dents.
Agree! And could you do something about the Surface Rust on the Underside?
I’d keep the decal on the window but yeah fix the bodywork
Also, please refurb this headlights. And maybe the calipers?😊
if anyone is wonderring why they didnt fix half the stuff...its because these channels are really about one thing, profit. they are car journalists (seriously, half of them are from the upper class stuffy car mag world, like autocar and evo etc). They have a budget from the sponsors and stick to it , meaning all the ad revenue and fees from the sponsor goes into their pockets. You will only see cheap and quick half arsed projects on this channel because they cant/wont do the workl themselves, as theyre journalists, so have to pay others to do it. Meaning less things can be tackled.
The bonnet!😮
Why do I feel like I'm watching a 3am infomercial?
I had the same issue with my Subaru during its MOT. What a coincidence. I wonder why these cars brake pipes burst like that. I wonder how many Subaru Impreza drivers had the same issue. My car is 2.5 06 blue model. I am planning to paint my wheels gold and sell it on
