The Dark Side of Houston Rap

  • Historically, Houston has been a major player in hip hop for a time period that stretches across several generations of rap fans. Going way back to the Foundation of its culture with the founding of Rap a Lot Records and the coming of Suave House Records, that created stars in hip hop like Scarface, The Geto Boys, Tela, 8Ball and MJG along with others. Going on to the era that for the most part created the culture of Houston that thrived for decades, that being Screw, which brought about artists from several different independent record labels which was a movement within itself producing labels like Wreckshop Records, Swisha House, Screwed Up Records, Jam Down, Sucka Free, Chevis Entertainment, Game Face Entertainment, Boss Hogg outlaws and more. There was also a breakout success prior to the ladder that gave Houston artist that had been in the underground a spotlight on Wanna Be a Baller by Lil Troy of Shortstop Records. And now the era that we are in now with a new wave of artists. Some who had seemingly cracked the cheat code in artists like Travis Scott. And breakout superstar Megan thee Stallion that spent a short period of time in the underground before being discovered by 1501 Entertainment and took flight. Kentheman who is in the midst of a ascend in her career, Maxo Kream, Sauce Walka, Lil Jairmy, Tobe Nwigwe, OMB Bloodbath, Don Toliver, Monaleo, Beat King, Lil Guapo, DJ XO and the list goes on and on.
And although Houston has had tremendous success in the music business with so much more to accomplish, there has been a extremely dark side attached to Houston that is centered around death that stained Houston and served as a dark cloud over the city for years.

Born and raised in Houston. 5th ward to be exact. I seen it all. I know and I knew alot of the artist you talking about. We lost some real legends. It's been crazy. This should definitely be a documentary. It's much more needed to be said. 🤘🏾🤘🏾

I fuck wit Houston rap. Next to Memphis, they’re the most influential music scene in the south and everyone wanna mimic their style. As an artist myself, I wanna connect with the Houston rap scene and work with some of their artists if my music career takes off. Much love from Florida.

As a born and raised Houstonian the syrup scene definitely fogged the city with the infamous deaths regarding styrofoam cups and lean. The purple drink made Houston synonymous. Although it has terrible effects to the brain, individuals still sip on syrup. Houston has some good food too so it's all cool but the grey clouded musical stain, it's more of a tribal thing. The fallen artists always are shout out in H-Town. Does Houston have a problem? In a crisis like no, to me it seems like the opiod outbreak and rise Houston we've had that before any of that. We get saved ultimately because we have hurricanes, ice freeze overs, hell heat summers, pollen all over your car, bad traffic, one of the biggest cities in the world, Houston. BBQ off the chain, citywide. The purple drank, lean, swisher rolled tight, for sho it's a Houston thing. It's just like all the other cities where Hip-Hop had an emergence, something happened in the city. I can't believe the influence it's taken. It's like taking someone else's prescription medication. In the end I hope Houston breaks away from the syrup sipping and pill popping.
