I watched so many instructional videos on gardening, and I have to say you just knocked this one out of the park! Clear presentation,, video focuses when needed to highlight key information. Just as I had a question for myself you answered it every time. As a teacher and instructional designer I'm frequently frustrated by the quality of instructional videos. Thank you so much for such a helpful tool.
Glad it worked for you. Let us know what other gardening hurdles you want to leap over. We'll get on making a video about it. We'd love to have you join our blog community as well! Happy Gardening! Monday's blog will be all about Salvias! www.thegardencontinuum.com/blog
This is right on time! With Corona-time on my hands I've become a first-time gardener. Never have grown Salvia but noticed bees on them at the market and brought some home for my hive. They're little guys but have already bloomed and past bloom: was so disappointed until you taught me that they can flower multiple times if you deadhead. Many thanks!
I've been gardening for many years but where to dead a flower has always been problematic. Even books never show exactly where to cut. I thank you, and my salvias will thank you, for your clarity.
This was a beautifully done education piece, and I feel confident that I can deadhead my salvia and watch it thrive. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.
A wonderful clear and descriptive video! Best i have ever seen! Thanks. Just getting ready to plant two salvia and feel well equipped with an understanding of the cutting back process.
This was the most helpful video on deadheading salvia ever!! I am new to may night salvia and look forward to helping them bloom their best. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this helpful and informative video! I knew to dead head but was never exactly sure where to cut. I just followed my gut based on what I saw was dead and what appeared to be new growth. I also was not positive what tool to use. I had been instructed to deadhead by pinching and pulling and that is HARD with Salvia! Out of desperation I grabbed scissors after a few years and this year bought myself a good pair of pruning shears.
Interesting. Good information. I planted some purple Sallyfun Salvia several months ago in March (This is in Central Florida. At the time it was in the 80's, now it's getting in the 90s every day). I watered at least several times a week and they looked good for a few months, then went into the mode of getting woody and the flowers dying off. They are planted by the house close to the front door, so I want to be sure I don't overwater or underwater with the Florida heat.
Thank you so much for this video! I just recently included salvia in my little garden and love it! I have watched numerous videos on how to take care of them, but this was absolutely the clearest demonstration (love the close ups!) and most gentle, specific, and respectful with regard to protecting the plant's new leaves and buds when trimming back.
Thanks for the details of exactly where on the stems to cut in the video. I watched at least 10 videos that showed cutting them back but didn't show exactly where on the stems and why. Very good 👍 good video, short and exactly where and why.
Great video! This is my first year for trying Salvia, and I had no idea what to expect from my plants, or how to care for them. Definitely going to put four plants in containers and hope to attract some humming birds to the porch! Thanks again!
I was very nervous and unsure how to deadhead my Salvia...Your video was SO helpful...clear explaination, great closeups! I'm now eager to give my Salvia "new life" and enjoy it's beautul color and texture for the rest of the summer 🤗
Thank you so much I cut back in fall and my spring bloom is beautiful but falling over and I didnt know if I oculd cut them and get new growth. Im excited to go out and dead head for a new bloom. Linda Marshall
If they're flopping - there may be too much water, not enough sun, or the plants are too big and need to be divided. Add some soil amendments to boost the mineral nutrition and add compost to fortify the plant's stem strength.
Thank you so much!! I'm new to salvia and put some in my birder this year and after the first bloom did some investigation on what to do with the spent blooms. You video is awesome, and very clear with great examples on how to do it right without ruining the new blooms! Thanks!! Going out to deadhead them now....
Very informative video. I have several varieties of salvias in my garden this year. With your demonstration and explanation, I feel like I can deadhead them and get another flush of flowers for my pollinators.
If you don't do it - the plant will be fine. The reason TO do it is to neaten up the look and maybe get more bloom. Deadheading is always optional. The more you do it, the more flowers you tend to get.
thanks! I was hoping for some fast trick. . . but you've verified my suspicion that you just have to go slo-o-ow. I like your editing job, too, by the way. Helpful to see the fast motion without having to spend too much time (because I do, after all, have to get back outside and get back to pruning!).
