    Thank you so much Kip.Although I have been Flight Simming for 20 years, it's been in the big passenger jets from PMDG and others . However, because my family gave me an 80th Birthday Present of a flying lesson in a Cessna172, I thought I would look for a good "instruments" tutorial. After much searching, I have been lucky enough to find this excellent tutorial, also the "GNS 530/430 ILS Approach". Both very clearly explained, and not like others I have seen ,where it is assumed that the students will have previous knowledge. My sincere thanks. Andy.

  • @CristianCalhoun
    @CristianCalhoun Před rokem

    Awesome! In the current version, if you click UP or DOWN, instead of the ALT button, it also brings you to VS mode. The benefit of it is that after you click once, don't have to move your mouse again to set up your VS ratio. :) Anyway, I don't know why we still don't have the "click on the instrument to 2D view" feature that X-Plane has. Why would it be crucial? Because tell me, how to dial in that heading in 20 kts wind. Unless you are not a Counter-Strike superstar, you just can't. Because the aircraft is twitching all around. And don't get me started on the active pause, please. :) :D

      @KipOnTheGround  Před 8 měsíci

      It's an audio panel that controls which radio frequencies you're transmitting on or monitoring (COM and NAV radios). The "O M I" lights are related to the Outer, Middle, and Inner markers/beacons associated with an ILS approach. The lights will illuminate and a tone will be heard when passing over these specific points during the approach. Hope that helps :-)

    Why do you have both Garmin 530 and Garmin 430 installed in the plane, is it a safety backup thing?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  Před 3 lety

      That's one of the benefits, yes! But you also get an additional COM radio, NAV radio, and can have 2 different screens going at the same time (for example, the 530 could show your map and the 430 could show the flight plan screen).
      One realistic use for the 2 comm radios is that you'd keep your ATC frequencies on COM1, and use COM2 to listen to weather/runway information on an ATIS frequency without needing to leave the ATC frequency (leaving the ATC frequency would actually require you to get permission from the controller so they know you'd be off the radio temporarily to check ATIS).
      And a use for 2 NAV radios would be the ability to track 2 different VORs at the same time, like when changing from one VOR to another, or monitoring your radials relative to 2 different VORs to determine your location.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  Před 2 lety

      I looked up the manual for the KAP 140, which is the real autopilot this is based on, and it says ARM is for toggling altitude capture mode (see page 85). So if it's disabled then I suppose it wouldn't capture the selected altitude and would instead just pass by it when climbing or descending using a vertical mode. I enabled tooltips temporarily and pointing at it says it's for toggling VS mode (must be a mistake), but that doesn't appear to be its function in MSFS or the intended real-world function either.
      Hope that helps! Here's the manual I found:

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Entering the target/selected altitude will automatically level the plane off when reaching that altitude, so we don't need to manually put the plane into altitude hold (ALT) mode when reaching our target altitude. It does it for us.
      Using VS at a setting of 0 FPM is different than ALT hold because it prevents the autopilot from climbing or descending the plane at all. While flying, the plane will change altitude when passing through air and because of wind. Say the plane is pushed 50 feet higher, VS set to 0 will not descend 50 feet to compensate, but ALT hold will.

      Unfortunately you can't just swap the avionics, but actually need a separate version of the plane that has those specific avionics. The 172 in this video is in the MSFS Deluxe upgrade (or you could get both Deluxe+Premium, each come with 5 additional planes). It's a steam-gauge 172 with the 530/430 installed instead of the G1000.

    How do you do a RNAV (GPS) approach?

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Josh. I don't have an RNAV-specific approach video yet, but the ILS video will help get you started because the basic principles of flying the approaches are similar. In both cases, you'll need to look at the approach plate/procedure document to learn about the specific of an approach, and know how to use your avionics to program the approach. An ILS approach happens to be a radio-based (VHF+UHF) approach that provides both lateral (horizontal) guidance AND vertical guidance. There are also radio-based approaches like a LOC (localizer) approach that only provides lateral guidance. RNAV approaches are basically the modern GPS/WAAS-based equivalents, and there are many types of these approaches as well. Some have lateral-only guidance, like a LNAV (lateral navigation) approach, and some have both vertical and lateral guidance with precision like an ILS, which is an LPV (localizer performance with vertical guidance) approach.
      If you're interested in trying out an ILS approach first, check out this video first: czcams.com/video/Cx9KFQtfN-c/video.html

    • @KipOnTheGround

      Negative :-( When autopilot is active, there is always a lateral and vertical mode enabled (by default, the vertical mode is Pitch Hold). When in pitch hold mode, you can use the UP/DN buttons to control the pitch though (it works this way in the G1000, so I think it does the same with the 530/430's autopilot as well). I'll often use HDG+ALT mode and then use the heading dial to steer the plane as I wish, while the autopilot maintains the altitude for me.

    The "deluxe" G530/G430 C172 has gotta be the *most* disappointing aircraft for me. Its the one aircraft I bought the top tier Premium Deluxe for (because 6-pack... like 90% of most GA aircraft out there) and its by far the MOST underwhelming and broken. The database doesn't match for shit, the autopilot fucks off half the time, and the Garmin units are so poorly done it's frustrating. Don't even get me started how broken GPS approaches are... Garmin should be disappointed that their brand name is in the sim on the 430/530, and should work with Asobo to fix it.

    • @Munky332
      @Munky332 Před 3 lety

      @@KipOnTheGround Thanks, I have the Community mod, it helps, albeit barely. At least it sort of half-fixed the Direct-To function. I'm working on getting a navigraph, not really sure if I want the charts or not, as I fly mostly in VR and having to keep popping under and look at my screen gets kind of tedious as is(vs sort of ducking under and using my Gov't provided iPad for FAA charts), though I'm looking at in-VR solutions right now that might help solve that. It's just a shame that Asobo put the "basic" 172 in the highest tier package, for it to be as bad as it is.
      Also just noticed, the WX seems really wonky right now. Flying in the North-East USA (Philly/Newark/LGA area) and the temp is below 0-C, yet the dewpoint in game isn't being tracked properly, its saying its +10 (physically impossible?) so as soon as you take off you have a massive ice build up... I'm hoping that REX weather fixes this, but I'm not a fan of how it generates/pops in weather right in front of you, though I think I might get over that if it fixes the Dewpoint problem.
