What makes a character a "literally me" is showing the character as a victim in a way.
The overall idea of relating to a character so bad is a way for losers to get rid of their self hate, by rationalizing actoins, and by fetishizing some problems so they get the feeling of a protagonist living a story

In anime, welcome to the NHK is most people's "literally me" you go into the show thinking it'll be a slice of life comedy where you laugh at some loser only to realize the loser was you. Funnily enough it is partially autobiographical to the point where the writer of the original novel cant even read it without getting ill.

Not everyone wants to be a drug addict or a loser it just happens to them because of life situations and this anime helps me understand that they’re always help out there you just gotta see the light at the end of the tunnel.

It's the version of you that feels like they're the protagonist of life.
literally me is ''broken lonely MEN that don't fit in society so they wanna change the world in some way, so the world fits him or at least do something big to people actually care about him'' that's why people relate, most people can't and never will change anything, but they have the same problems of the character so when they see those characters going thru the same shit and still making something out of it is beautiful. plus music,edting and composition can make anyhing deep and interesting you just gotta have the right artists behind it and Mr robot does this better than anyone.

How can you not include K from BR2049 which is literally me. Jokes aside , its a meme and yes some people find some common part with the "alt" character or the sad character, maybe because these characters evoke the same emotions that they want to/already have, or maybe they want to feel distant and different as well from the others. And i dont see the harm in it.

Surprising that you didn't mention Fight Club. Same as with 500 days of summer, there are plenty of men loving the movies and relating to the main leads while completely missing the points of both movies

The literally me trope is annoying but we all do it whether you're trying to model yourself off a person you met, friend or a movie character we all do it because i think we'd be confused with how to act as ourselves etc.

Jokes aside, this meme/trope are pretty multi-faceted. I can understand why one would be inspired by or relate to a character who has lived a similar life. However, "becoming" that character in a literal sense shows me that a person is lacking development in one form or another. The best way to grow is to write your own story, not live as a character written by someone else.
