Motivated by their love of the first two Thief titles, a group of talented individuals created The Dark Mod which was originally released as a mod for Doom 3 in 2009, and in October, 2013 it became a standalone game. Ultimately, The Dark Mod is a Thief game without actually being a Thief game.

The Dark Mod has definitely kept the series' flame alive. Thief is not just a cult game or beloved nostalgia. It's truly an immersive simulation for infiltrating the "darkness" of the world and revealing its secrets.
Its amazing how the Thief community has built up a self sustaining content base almost on par with Half Life and Doom without much attention.
Which I guess is on par for a series where everything is done secretly in darkness.

Keep in mind that walking around with weapons out, makes you more visible, just like in the original thief games.

I guess I'm an outlier because I didn't mind the supernatural creatures in the first Thief game. In fact, I wish that Thief: Gold had left the mages out of the Lost City mission. It had better atmosphere when there were no humans at all there. Having mages be present ruins the feeling of being in a long-forgotten place.

A big thing to learn about the dark mod is that reading in game lore, listening to npcs, and exploring is pretty much required to complete missions. That probably could have been explained more in the starter missions but once you get that, it's such an amazing game

any recommendation on similar games (like Thief, Arx Fatalis, Deus Ex)? I like atmospheric games with condensed spaces, attention to details, story, etc.

I love the Thief series. Easily one of my all time favorites. And The Dark Mod is a precious act of preserving Thief’s legacy.

You're right, I got frustrated in the tavern, didn't find any combination and I wasn't going to go back to study the newspapers. I would appreciate some suggetions for fun but more straightforward maps.
Dark mod is a must for any thief or stealth fan.
I made a mission with another author in 2019, Cleaning up the Neighbourhood.
Anyone who makes a video on it must have good taste in video games 😉

DM is definitely missing something compared to Thief 2 and it's fan missions.
This mod look like thief 3 deadly shadows. I like this but i want to play in 3d.
Do you know what would kill the dark mod community? A mod friendly good installation in the theif franchise. Ya no end in sight.
Has this been made available for quest 2 standalone yet. I saw team beefy able to port old games to standalone. Was hoping thief from the og xbox would have been ported by now

Do we really need to use UE5 though? technically they can still use UE4 or Unity.
By the way, what's up with The Dark Mod ? No more new fan missions was presented on the page for about half a year.

@@brandonmccann15, yes, there are new missions and others in work. It's a small community and creating a good mission is a lot of work. Small missions have a faster release, but larger ones need more, adding a beta testing and fixing bugs, before the release.
Anyway, you can download the editor and try to make your own missions.

The Dark Mod is terrible for sound mechanics compared to the original Thief games and alternative engines.
I don't know why but this mod just feels so sloppy to me, I'd rather but play Thief fan missions.
