- The music video for "New Moon on Monday" was filmed by director Brian Grant during the morning of December 7, 1983, in the village of Noyers in France. The long version is a 17-minute "movie version" which includes an extended introduction before the song starts (including a scene of dialogue between Simon Le Bon and the story's female lead, played by Patricia Barzyk, winner of the Miss France title in 1980; a brief snippet of "Union of the Snake" is also heard on a radio), and is set to an extended remix of the song.

I was just gonna say the same thing! I saw the link in a Facebook post and thought "eh... I'm not gonna click it because I've seen the extended version on Dancing on the Valentine (the VHS)." After I got about the 2: 25 mark, things started to look different, and I was like "WHAT?? What the hell is this??" And watched the rest of the whole thing with my jaw open. Now the actual video makes more sense with the storyline. Thank you for posting this publicly!

Duran Duran did this mini movies of their videos and then they became MTV hits and this is one. Duran Duran were pioneers of music video and they were the best at it!!

oh my god~where on earth did you find this gem~i've been a durannie since 1982 and i've seen new moon vid many times since feb '84 release~even have it on the video e.p BUT NEVER SEEN/HEARD OR EVEN KNEW THIS VERSION EXISTED~why had this never been released back then or even shown~wow this has made my year so far~whoever you are that found this and put this on here is a star~top work you hero :)
This video is like Indiana Jones meets Les Miserables meets Missle Command meets Dance Dance Revolution. I haven't the faintest idea what is going on half the time but I freaking love every second of it.

Vive la revolution! This is what I loved about Duran Duran. Cinematographic quality, long videos, which were very special and well produced. Probably the best videos to come out of the 80's.

Whn I was 11 in '84 I really wanted to have Simon's jacket with the Ragged Tiger symbol on the collar. 😄
Me too! I remember Simon gave the jacket away on a Saturday morning show competition, I was so jealous some girl won it.
As a DD fan since 1981, this is the first I've seen of this. If it really were filmed in one morning, it's extremely speedy work by the cast, substantial number of extras and crew. A night shoot followed by a day shoot is quite unusual. Including a helicopter shoot, too, I'd have thought this would be several days.
Andy Taylor, in his memoir: " "Everybody... hates it, particularly the dreadful scene at the end where we all dance together," Taylor wrote in his memoirs. "Even today, I cringe and leave the room if anyone plays [it]." He recalls that they were miserable since their Christmas holiday had been cut short to shoot the video, and spent most of the day on the dark and cold set drinking, to the point that he was "half cut" by the time the last scenes were shot. "It's one of the few times I've seen Nick dance."

Yes, i know about the cringe of the band regarding this video but i always loved it!! This was my first DD song i loved in my childhood, the chourus was in my mind since 15 years, when a friend gave me a seven and the ragged tiger TAPE! Today at 48 years, i see for the first time the entire video..omg ❤

Never saw this before! A whole other mix of the song. The last 4 minutes of the bandmates dancing is priceless. I can see why they edited it down, but I admit I could've watched another 20 minutes of it. 😄
This video version is my most fave, I know that DD was a bit in the bag when they did this video and are not proud of it, but man I loved how Russel Malcahey turned it into a mini movie. I fuckin love this version of this video. Guys you said how you did not like this version of this video but I think it was amazing and so many others do, seeing the comments here for this video.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought this. I have seen this video several times, but only after repeat viewings did I realize he was pretty good despite not having an acting background. It must be that he is just comfortable in front of the camera since he already had to get used to it before.

The only reason Simon never went into acting must have been personal - for whatever reason he just wasn't truly interested, or preferred to focus on the music. A shame in many ways, as he truly does seem to have a real affinity for the big screen.

At the risk of sounding weird, Simon has always reminded me of a lion (yes, really, lol) - there's something incredibly powerful, intense and confident about him, isn't there?
Always thought it was strange how it was John who ended up doing some acting jobs when it was Simon that originally went to Drama and acting school. Would had loved to see him acting on something.

I think the band are slightly embarrassed by this video - not a favourite of theirs, heck, it isn't likely to ever be on their own channel. but for me it shows a band trying something way outside what was expected from a band at the time - and they should be applauded for it. And it is a pretty darned cool mega extended version!
